My son is 3 and they say that he is tongue tied and needs his tongue clipped. i know nothing about this but they are wanting to put him to sleep and I am very nervous about this. I do not handle anesthesia very well and I an very concerned about his safety.

I have schedualed an appointment with another ENT specialist for this Friday...I'll let you know how the 2nd opinion goes!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank You all so much for your advice. It was very comforting to me as I dealt with this. My son had his surgery October 25. It was very hard to sit there and let strangers wheel my baby away. But it didn't bother him at all. He was even excited that he got to ride on a bed with wheels.LOL The surgery went well even though they had to cut him a lot worse than we origionally thought. My son woke from the anesthesia without any problems and is doing great. He loves that he can say new things. I had a wonderful experience and wanted to say thank you!!!

K.,

I'm an RN and I have never heard of this condition. Please do some research before you do anything.

I'm not sure if it hurts more when they're older, but my son had his tongue clipped when he was 2 months old, and it was a breeze. He cried for about 15 seconds, then was fine. It did bleed for a little while, but not long. I don't think there are many nerve endings there. So they may only want to put him under so it won't freak him out. You might ask if it is possible to do while he's awake, then maybe have a treat for him as soon as they're finished, like ice cream or something. Good luck!

I had the same issue with my son (now 7) when he was 2. I took him to a specialist ENT and he told me it really wasn't that bad as well as if it did start to cause speech problems it was a very easy procedure. He never mentioned putting him to sleep. We eventually found out that it was not severe enough to worry with. So, I would just get a second opinion and if you haven't yet, see a specialist. Hope that helps.

If you're not sure and can get another opinion, get it first. Also, do some research on the net if you haven't already. God Bless you two to make the right decision,

I don't have any direct experience with this, but my husband was tongue-tied and had his clipped when he was very little. They didn't clip very much as he can't really stick his tongue out very far but it doesn't inhibit eating or talking.

HUG for having your child need anesthesia. I was a wreck when mine had his surgeries...they were both small procedures but I felt sooo helpless. Hang in there!

Hi K.,
My brother was tongue tied and had to have the proceedure. That was like 29 years ago.Medicine has come a very long way since then.He will be fine,I know the worry you feel my 10 month old goes for tubes in his ears later this month. Both my older boy had tonsils taken out. Please don't worry he will be fine. There are excellent sites now on the web that talk about the proceedure try a search, I did on tubes and they are very detailed. The last thing you need is worry kids tend to pick up on it no matter how hard you try to hide it.Be strong for him....Good luck H.

Before having ANY kind of surgery, whether for myself or my child, I would start by getting a second and possibly even a third opinion. There may be other less invasive ways of dealing with the problem - speech therapy, for instance.

I dont think you should be worried, they wouldn't do it if it would not help him. My 2 year old had four surgerys before he was 2 with anesthesia they werent anything serious but he had to be put under four times.
