I have a 22 month old who was vomitting for 7 hours straight. We went to the Hospital for hydration, they admitted her and sent us home the next day with the brat diet. She had be having diareha in the hospital. She had a great day the next day and kept some food down. However the day after that she had vomitted 4 times. I took her to the doctors and they said it was a virus and to just watch her. The name of the virus is Rotovirus. My questions is how can she have a good day and then the next day vomit again? Is this normal? cuz it is very unsettling. all her blood work was normal.what the heck is this teriable virus?

What can I do next?

Rotovirus is common and nasty. The throwing up will last a day or two (or more) and be followed by up to 2 weeks of horrible diarrhea. It is extreamly contagious. My son had it around 5 mos. He didn't appear too bothered by it-- but it was a mess! I would push lots of pedialite (they make popsicles too) and avoid juices until it is gone. Good luck.

Rotovirus is nasty. It is not just the stomach flu, it is an inflamation of the entire gastrointestinal system and is highly contagious. This is the virus that you hear about that affects entire cruise ships, daycares, etc. My son got it last summer while we were visiting my parents. He actually handled it quite well for a 2 year old, but then I got it, both of my parents got it, and my brother got it also, despite our best efforts to clean & disinfect EVERYTHING. Both my brother and I (23 and 31) ended up in the hospital with IV's due to dehydration. It takes a while to run its course so unfortunately you have to be patient, even though it is frustrating, especially to see little ones go through it. But don't be surprised if the rest of the family comes down with it because it isn't just a "kid's illness." Best of luck and hang in there!

Rotovirus is like the stomach flu. It usually lasts about 2-3 days. Becareful because you will get it too, you can pss it back and forth. It is VERY important to keep your house sterilized as well. Wipe with Clorox Bleach Wipes. Just keep her hydrated and buy some pedialyte, if she will chew ice that is good too. I have three kids and each of them has had this, good luck!!!

oh my... my 5 year old, when he was 7 months got it. he had non stop diahrea every 15 minutes for 2 days. his lasted more than tha tho.. it was awful i just laid him on the floor under a towel because i knew i would be changing him again. his butt got soooooooooo raw from top to bttom that i would cry when i had to change him. the hospital told me to feed him . but dr said said an ounce an hour? look on the internet. do a google search. that will be best bet. its a nasty bug that sits in there intestines for how ever how long,, cant remember now. then after it decides to leave then your daughter should start feeling better. dr ended up telli ng me to give my son immodium because he was getting dehydrayted. and if they wasnt going to work i had to take him back for an 18 hour watch. he couldnt be around anyone under 5 because its so contagious. and wash your hands EVERY ti me you change her or clean up after her. its just a nasty nasty thing to have. but it will pass. look on internet.. that will help answer some questions..

Even as adults we don't spring back immediately and we have up and down days. Push clear fluids, Pedialyte or if they don't like that my kids love the Gerber brand Liqui-Lites (sp?)
They absolutely don't recommend Gatorade/sports drinks anymore. Some of the contents can actually make things worse. Don't be tempted to stray from the diet even if they seem better. Tummy needs a rest and they will revert to puking if you bring them off too soon!
Good luck!

It is totally normal. My triplets went thru that the week before last. Puking one day, keeping stuff down and sleeping a ton the next and puking the following day. It took 2 of them a week to totally get rid of it.

Give her all the fluids you can. If Pedialite won't work- liquid in a bottle?? (even the frozen pops) then go as far as to give her Gateraid (even if you have to make the popsicles yourself). That is what my doctor told me to do (as the sugar in Gateraid takes less effect than the liquid absorbed by drinking it while that sick). All viruses need a ton of liquids esp. with that much diareha! Pump her up with as many liquids as possible. Pedialite, if it works for her (my son hated it, but liked the popsicles for a little while.) After that wore out with him, we switched to Gateraid. Then that didn't even work ( he couldn't stand the taste anymore) I made flavor pops out of mostly water and I let him help me add a small amount of juice to them (that seemed to work because he was helping). Your poor little girl needs fluids. keep them in her, how ever you can. And try to gear towards water if at all possible. That or liquids that help to retain water (esp. Pedialite, Gateraid, etc.).
Good luck! I've been there! Dehydration is nothing to mess around with!
BY THE WAY: The more little ones vomit, the more liquid they loose!
So if they are vomitting a lot, try smaller doses
call an emergency room if she is vomitting a lot
they may even recomend that she only be given a tablespoon
every hour! Just to be sure she is absorbing the liquid!!!

Hello! I want to start by saying I am so sorry that your daughter is going through this. My daughter had it a few weeks ago. Then, we all got it. So, I mean it when I say that I know what you are going through. My daughter started the same way. She vomitted off and on for about 2 days. Then the diarrhea started in. Then she would be good for a day and then it all started again. Her diarrhea got so bad that her but was almost blistered. Definitely not a fun week in my household. I gave her lots of Pedialyte and Gatorade. I kept her on the B.R.A.T. diet for almost the whole week. I did give her some chicken noodle soup and whole grain crackers. I also gave her Pedialyte popsicles. I also used children's/baby's Immodium. The pharmacist recommended this. It took a while for it to work. But, eventually it did. I put on diaper rash lotion everytime I changed her bottom (which seemed like 20x a day). The best lotion I have ever used is called "Butt Paste" (funny name, huh). You can buy it at Wal-Mart, Target, etc. I swear by this stuff. I also gave her several baths a day to reduce the irritation to her bottom. I hope this advice helps and hope that your little princess feels better really soon. It took about 7-8 days before Gracelyn was back to normal. Of course, then she started teething and now has a horrible cold. It seems endless sometimes. Good Luck and God Bless!

Ice chips was what worked for me. It kept my boy hydrated and I only fed him small amounts of food. He was not interested in food that much though so it was the only thing i had to work with. Jello water is good too. He had said to give a little bit of yogurt as well to help build up the good cultures in his system to help fight this virus.
As far as the bottom is concerned...VASELINE was the trick for me. I gave him a warm sitz bath in cornstarch to make sure his bottom was clean. Then I used Neosporin on his bottom and covered it was gobs of Vaseline. SO when i wiped him it was only touching the Vaseline. I kept reapplying. It worked and he didn't scream every time I changed him!

My son had rotovirus. It is a very nasty little bug!!! He never vomited, but had very very very bad diareah. It is different for everybody, and some cases are worse. Your little one could have started getting ove rit and picked it up again. It is highly contagious. My son was in diapers when he had it, and my Dr. told me every time I changed his diaper, to tie it up in a plastic bag, take it outside to the trash, and wash my hands RIGHT away. My son is 5 now, and when he was little they had removed the vaccine for it, but it is back out again, and I had my 6 mo. old vaccinated for it. If you get your childs vacs. then maybe you could ask your Dr. about. I tossed the option around for a little while, but in the end my Dr. and I decided that my 6 mo old should get it, b/c my older one is in school, and could easily bring it home. I'm sure if they told you that it was rotovirus, then it prob. is. It is a very had virus to deal w/ and may take a while to get rid of. Just keep your house sanitized, w/ clorox wips, and I sprayed EVERYTHING w/ Lysol, especially the bathroom, and when my son spent most of his time while he was sick!! Hope this helps, and good luck

My daughter had the Rotavirus when she was about 11 months old and our pediatrician said it just had to work it's way through her system. Since it is a "virus" and not a bacterial infection there really is no antibiotics that will help. Just getting her diarrhea under control with the brat diet will help incase she has cramping and so on. This virus doesn't always make you feel bad all the time so she may have just had a good day, her body is fighting this virus and that takes time which may seem forever when your baby is sick! Be patient and keep a close eye on signs of dehydration just incase.

Both of my kids had the Rotovirus and they had it for seven days straight. They vomited for the first days and then had terrible diarreha for the reminder of the days. They would be playing for an hour or so and then they would be on the ground just having terrible stomach pains and then it would pass after the diarrhea would come and then be fine for awhile. I was just told to make sure they were constantly drinking water/gatorade and watch for dehydration. It is a miserable virus and I would never wish it upon any child but they say once they get it they will probably never get it again. I hope your little gets better soon and let me know if you need anymore advice about this virus.

the rota is terrible and going around like crazy! i have a 3 month old and i'm so afraid she'll catch it since it's going around her daycare. there is now a vaccine for this virus, it's fairly new. but it has to be given to the infant at ages 2 months, 4 months and 6 months as it's a series vaccine. good to know for your next baby!!

hope your little one feels better soon.

Yep its normal our house is going through the same thing. Just hang in there I would stick to a BRAT diet though until you know that you know she is OK. I am so sick of cleaning up snot and puke too. I can't wait till summer and all these bugs are gone. It is so very hard when they are little. Good Luck M.

My son had this also and he to would have a good day and the next was vomiting but he was over it in a few days ... milk would trigger him to vomit . the doctor told me that it takes longer for toddlers to heal after being sick so there stomach isnt back to normal yet. and after the vomiting was said and done he had severe diarrea but that sooned passed about 5 days later so your toddler should be back to normal soon. they also told me to give him lots of liquid of course but instead of 3 big meals a day to give him several little meals. hope everything goes well and your child feels better soon .
