My son soon to be 3 in november is a picky eater and doesnt eat much vegetables. I was thinking of putting him on a good multi vitamin. Does anyone know of a good one to buy? I was trying to prolong this cuz we are worried about the pill popping at such an early age.

What can I do next?

USANA has a really good Usanimals. You can look at charts that compare other vitamins. I take their Essentials and use their vitamins for my prenatal vitamins. Really good company based out of Salt Lake. You can order them online.

Hi M.,

I recommend Body Balance. Both of my kids take it (they're 4 and 1), as do I and it's wonderful. My 4-year-old is a super picky eater as well... yet I have total peace of mind because I know she's getting what she needs on a daily basis. It's a liquid so it's highly absorbable, and it tastes awesome (like black cherry juice) so kids love it (and it requires no pill popping!).

Before I started taking it 6 years ago, I was taking antibiotics every 2-3 years for over 10 years for chronic kidney infections and sinus infections. Since I started on the Body balance 6 years ago, I haven't been on antibiotics AT ALL. Not to mention my PMS is gone! My kids have never been on antibiotics and haven't gotten sick or anything (not to mention it works wonders in the prevention/healing of ADD and ADHD, etc).

Here's a link w/ more information:

My boys are picky too, my doctor has alway's told me the best over the counter vitamins for kids are the Flinstone, gummi, or chewable's.They love them, and will usually eat them well. Ask your pediatrician to see what he recommends. I don't know if they can swallow pills so young. Mine don't at 6 1/2 and 4!

Most vitamins are not able to be absorbed by the body.

I use Koala Pals they are soluble and bound to minerals so the body can absorb them.

They are also made from all natural colors, flavors, and sweeteners.

My son takes them he is almost two. We started him with half a vitamin when he got the molars to chew them.

Good luck getting your son to eat his food.
I would offer a variety of foods some new and some he likes and don't make him finish. You do not want a power struggle.

S.
I get the vitamins online let me know if you want help finding them.

Hi M.! My only experience here is I feel vitamins are over rated, and he could have absorbtion problems. Your best bet, (I feel) is to find some pedia-sure or something else in liquid form. The way to go anymore is to DRINK your healthy vitamins/antioxidants because they deliver better. Start making up names for your healthy snacks, or make them fun to eat by creating "faces" or figures with them.
When I would make funny things with the food, and call them different names, my girls would eat them! Good luck!

We grew up on the Neo-life children's vitamins. It is a direct-sale compay, and unfortunately I don't have any info about contacting a representative, but I'm sure you could do a google search. They have a natural citrusy taste and come in squares with no added coloring. The vitamins are from natural sources, which are easier to absorb. And they are low iron, which is important for young children.

Whatever you go with, check the label for the iron content. Most kids' vitamins have 18 mg, which is the same as an adult vitamin, and it only takes a couple to overdose - which can be deadly. If his only issue is veggies, he eats meat well, and is not anemic, he doesn't need an iron suppliment. (We gave them to our kids for a few years. One son figured out how to open the child-proof cap, as kids do, and ate a bunch. I called poison control and because they had low iron, we didn't have to worry about anything.)

You have to watch the labels for kids under 3 years old. I bought a big bottle of vitamins for my boys, then discovered that I had to cut each one in half for my 3 year old. Luckily my 5 year old can eat the whole thing.
I started cutting them with a sharp knife, but there was vitamin powder all over the place, and they make them look fun, so they are irregular shapes. It was impossible to cut them in HALF.

So I went back and bought a Flintstones brand specifically for kids under 4. It's so much easier, and a precise dose for my 3 yr old.

As for "pill-popping" at a young age, it's not like you're giving him medication that he doesn't need. Like Benadryl to make him sleep on a car ride or something. I also just remembered that when I was a little older, about 6 or 7, I used my chewable vitamins to learn how to swallow a pill. It was nice after that so I didn't have to have a liquid (ick!) version of all my medications. I sure wouldn't want to have practiced on real medication!

Hi M.,

My son is four and it is sometimes a chore to get him to eat a veggie. One week he'll eat broccoli and the next week he wont! :) For me as a mom, I feel so good I have been giving him Juice Plus since he was 11months old. Juice Plus is 17 different fruits veggies and grains in a GUMMIE for kids.(we take a capsule) It's our nutritional safety belt and helps us bridge the gap of what we can't, won't and don't eat. It's better than a multi because it's WHOLE food, it's what we should be eating and it's not isolated vitamins. Visit www.DenverJuicePlus.com to learn more and to purchase it or give me a call ###-###-####.

Have a great day!

M.: I am with the "juicePlus" moms. Julie Berra is my rep and she is awesome. She can tell you about the natural fruits and veggies that are in their gummies. I'm trying to take my son off the vitamins and just have him chewing the gummies. He thinks they're fruit snacks like we get at the store

I also work with a USANA rep that has pharmaceutical grade vitamins (unlike over the counter brands, what they say is in their vitamin is in it. They test their vitamins during the day to make sure they are "up to standard")and my son has been taking those. it's just harder as I have to crush them and put them in something.

theJuicePlus are my recommendation! Good luck!

There's nothing wrong w/ taking a vitamin. Of course, eating the whole food is best. But I know few adults, let alone toddlers, who eat a diet that fulfills their dietary needs. There are lots of good ones to choose from. Just find one your toddler is willing to take. Caution: Keep vitamins out of reach of children. Some kids think it's candy and can over-do it.

Arbonne makes a great multi-vitamin for children that is in the form of a powder that you can mix with juice or water. The kids love it and research has found that Arbonne makes one of the best line of vitamins for everyone - a lot of over the counter ones don't get absorbed into the body, so you're paying a lot for nothing, pretty much.
You have to order Arbonne products through a distributor. If you look up the website, arbonne.com, you can find one near you, or it's very easy to become one yourself. If you're not interested in actually selling the products, you still get a pretty good discount for becoming a distributor. I love all of their products!!!
Good luck!

Hi M.. I know you feel about early childhood pill popping! Plus, most kids can't take pills even if they try. I've found a great liquid supplement that tastes really good AND it is a whole food instead of synthetic so your body knows exactly what to do with the nutrients. Because of this, it also won't make kids nauseous, even when taken on an empty stomach. I've been giving it to my daughter since she was 1 (she is now 2 1/2) and she LOVES it! Don't worry about the 'pill popping' because this isn't the same thing as using a medication. I don't have a particular brand to suggest, just one he will take! I would stay away from added iron unless you found out he was anemic, as iron can cause costipation. Just look for something that covers the basics and is kid-friendly, like Gummy-vites. Good luck!

I don't have a particular brand to recommend, but try to find something that is "food-based." Basically that means that instead of using chemically created mirrors of the nutrients we need, the nutrients in the vitamin are actually taken from food. These kinds of vitamins are easier for your body to absorb. In fact, many standard vitamins use such low-quality nutrient mirrors that they are mostly or completely unavailable to your body. One easy check is to see if your son gets "vitamin pee." If his pee turns bright yellow and has a strong vitamin smell to it, that is a dead giveaway that his vitamins are being flushed through his system rather than being absorbed. Remember that quality vitamins are going to cost more, but if you are flushing his vitamin down the toilet, it doesn't matter if it's a good deal - it's still a waste.

I take New Chapter Organics and I really like them. I don't know if they have a kids' formula. Many friends of mine also like the Rainbow brand.

Best of luck,
S. L

ps - In response to the recommendation for PediaLite... this is an electrolyte drink. It is not a vitamin supplement. The only reason to offer PediaLite is when your child has severe diarrhea and dehydration. Even then, you would be better off with a brand like Recharge that is not full of chemical preservatives, artificial flavors and sugar. The reviewer was absolutely right about dressing up foods to make them more appealing, but there is no reason to drink PediaLite to try to get vitamins.

We do half of a Fintstones Complete. They split really easily in your hand, so no knife necessary, and Target carries an identical generic. The complete seems to have the most ingredients. The gummies don't have iron, at least last I checked none of them did. Probably any would work. We have to have iron, and something else, zinc? for our little guy. GL! I do agree with the other mom who said not to worry about pill-popping. Two totally different things.

Dear M., You should put him on Juice Plus Gummies. Research it a little and see what you think. This is what I know about them. They are natural, taste great, are only fruit and veggies, should your child get into them and eat them they would only get diarhea not liver damage. I gave them to my grandson and I think it kept him from having asthma or from being diagnosed with it. They helped build him up so he was not frail and ill all the time. My friends daughter takes them and does not get colds as often as the others do in school. I take them myself to keep regular and to give me soemthing sweet to eat in the evenings. They are delivered right to my house and only cost $22 a month. Write back and I will give you Heathers phone number. She is the lady I purchase them from. GL K. K.
