I was wondering how I should handle or what to expect with traveling with my 19 month old son with a cold. Will he be in allot of pain? I was just wondering if any mom out there has traveled with their child with a cold.

What can I do next?

I've travelled w/ healthy kids and have have to travel home when they've had ear infections (as a 1 and 3 year old) ... I would say .. other than the obvious drinking/sucking thing during the flight ... be sure to have all your necessities handy ... also, while you might not normally do this ... we usually end up doing lots of snacking on the plane .... if it helps the trip move along - then one day with extra snacks certainly won't hurt them. :-) So, pack lots of food goodies. :-)

Lastly, if you find that you think he may be uncomfortable, I'd give him some tylenol before the trip - just to cover any aches/pains just in case - again, that just MY opinion.

My son has always had a difficult time with ear pain when he wasn't sick. Being sick with possible sinus congestion my make matters a little worse. Check with your pediatrician, but I would give a decongestant before take-off. Also, if you can get him to drink something out of a sippy cup or bottle on take-off and landing, that should help "clear" his ears.

Good luck and happy travels!

I have a sinus infection one time on a plane, and I thought
my head was going to explode. I don't mean to scare you. I would take the advice of all the other mothers...just pump him full of meds. Find one that puts him to sleep & a decongestant...try Claritin. Also, if he takes a pacifier, that
will really help. The sucking will help his ears pop. Good luck!!

Check with your doctor to see how much Benadryl you can give him about 45 minutes to 1 hour before boarding the plane. Also, make sure he has a pacifier or something to drink during takeoff and landing.

Have a great trip!

I had a cold two years ago on a plane, with an congested ear, and it was AWFUL! I got sick to my stomach it hurt so much.

Give him whatever the doc says is okay about 20 minutes before you take off. Decongestant, Tylenol, whatever the doctor allows.

And do give him the sippy cup that another poster suggested, and I wouldn't feed him too much until you're on the plane and see how he's doing, in case he gets sick like I did.

While I agree with the moms saying give the child meds, make sure they will last through landing. I am a former flight attendant and the descent is worse than take off. It will take you more time to get down from 30,000 feet than it will to get there. And if he is awake...be prepared, it will be uncomfortable for him...just keep him sucking if he is awake and try to have him suck even if he is asleep.

We traveled with a 2 YO and a 6 MO last September and both had colds. Give him some tylenol or motrin about 30 minutes before your flight. Make sure he is drinking or sucking on something during take off and landing. If you do those 2 things, you should be fine.
