I am starting to think about redecorating my 2 year old's room from a nursery to a more big girl room. Does anyone have any helpful websites or suggestions on where to get ideas?

If she likes princess's and fairy's go with a theme of that sort, there are all kinds out and you can find paper, and decorations just about everywhere..........and they like those even at 7 or 8......

If you want something more grown up than that, you could go with musical notes, or if she likes sports, some sports stuff........

Go to a paint store or a hardware store and see what they have.......sky's the limit...........if you can draw, put drawings on the wall and paint them, if not, there are people you can pay to that..........

good luck and have a great day.

Hi C.-

Just one quick suggestion. I've seen a lot of parents put shelves up with snow globes and other pretties for their toddler to see. Too often the toddler will create "ladders" so they can reach the pretties. Be careful of that.

Hi! Isn't it so fun to start thinking about big girl rooms? The websites Laurie provided are great inspiration points and you can often find things much cheaper at discount stores and even thrift stores. I don't have any websites but just some ideas to throw out.
1. instead of a wood chair rail you can use decals all around the room. I painted top half of room light pink, bottom half darker pink, and have big giant purple circle decals from Lowes as the chair rail.
2. Toddler corner- I got 3 cheap frames from IKEA and glued them to a piece of wood. I painted one of the boards with magnetic paint, one with chalk board paint, and one with dry erase paint to make a craft corner. I now have her play kitchen near it and a little table from IKEA that I painted to match the room.
3. Grown up wall decor, garden decor that you can put flowers in to match the color scheme of the room
4. Get a simple chandelier (I got one for $40 at Lowes) and then decorated the lamp shades with ribbon, crystal beads, and fake flowers to make it so girly and match the room colors.
5. In one daughters room I have wainscotting on the bottom. Above the chair rail, I painted wooden flowers to match the room, added a button in the middle with a little sparkly crystal. I then stuck them up every 4 inches using sticky tack putty that teachers use in their classrooms.
6. Picture frames with barbie clothes inside the frames and create a collage on the wall

Have so much fun!!!!!

I like the idea of having a wrap-around shelf near the ceiling to display breakables that your child likes seeing, but Rebecca M has a good point about making sure your child cannot make ladders. My boys have lost their rocking chair because they would drag it and block their door and use it to climb onto the shelf at the top of their closet (then fall, of course). I like the decals that you can put on painted walls that do not damage them and you could find something in a craft store and use that as a starting point. Putting in a chair rail can be nice so you can stencil or put decals on the lower parts of the walls where your daughter can see them and then paint the top a different solid color. I would avoid too much of a theme so she can grow with the room and try to keep the colors as pleasant as possible. Have fun! I need to try this with my kids sometime, too!

I'm a decorator in McKinney. Go to the HGTV site. Under "Decorating", the Designers Portfolio section has lots of pictures for inspiration.

Yes, ask your daughter. She is very much her own person now and can begin to verbalize what colors she likes, animals or characters she likes, etc. Ask her what she likes and decorate around it.

My DD has always like animals, cats in particular, so I made a 'cat room' with stenciled cat paw prints, lots of stuffed cats and a 'faux fur' kittie cat blanket for her to use instead of a comforter.

But start with the little person who has to live with the decorations :)

Is there an Ikea near you? I love walking through there and getting ideas from their little display rooms. We just did this for our 2 yr. old daughter. I have a quilt for her, so we based the colors of the room from that, and then found cute butterfly and ladybug pictures for the walls. We also got a flower light from Ikea that hangs on the wall and has a green cord that hangs down like a stem- so cute and the light is soft so we use it like a nightlight. She LOVES her big girl room! Also, Target has the stick on wall decals, which are cute and not permanent. When decorating a room, I like to find one piece to start with (a pillow, curtain, bedspread, lamp, art) then work from there. Have fun!
