Toddler Sick (Virtually) Non-stop Since Starting Day Care (Old Post and Update)

My sweet little boy, who is almost three and a half years old, used to get sick once every 2-4 months with colds or viruses, until he started daycare last April. Since then he's been sick every two weeks over the spring, summer, and fall with colds and viruses, big and small. We had a one month respite (we needed it!!) while I had surgery in November/December only to have our little guy catch another virus and develop an ear infection over New Years. Pedi prescribed 10 days of antibiotics. He finished them and developed a bad cough this a few days later. Pedi said he had pus in his throat and it should get better on its own. As we went to put my little boy down for the night, right after the doctor's visit, he complained he couldn't lie down because his ears hurt. He's had two ear infections in his life and he never complained about them. For him to complain means this is big! Went back to the pedi to find out he had an ear infection, which led to more antibiotics. Following that he developed strep throat. Just as he finished those antibiotics he developed the flu, and he'd had the flu vaccine. Doctor gave him an anti-viral (tamiflu). After four days of fever, he finally seemed to be better yesterday but developed a fever again today. Doc thinks he might have strep again. I could just cry.

We're doing everything we know to help our son get better. I nursed him for fourteen months, which is supposed to boost his immune system. Next, we give him all sorts of vitamins, from Omega-3 to sumbocol, to probiotics. He eats a healthy diet and gets the rest he needs. We spend as much time outside as possible, especially in the summer. What else could we be doing? Is this normal!??? A lot of parents I talk to say their child was never sick as much as my son, which is great for them but makes me wonder if something more serious is going on. We've tried to pull our son out of day care but weren't successful in finding someone who could stay with him. I'm cointinuing to look...

We just saw a great pediatric ENT who said his adenoids looked fine and tonsils were slightly to moderately enlarged, but no reason to cut them out. He basically couldn't offer any counsel but suggested we go to a Pediatric Allergist/Immunologist. We've scheduled an appt for three weeks from now. We went to another highly recommended pediatrician just yesterday who, like our pediatrician, said that for some kids, it takes longer for their bodies to build up an immunity and that he is building up his "memory" so that he won't get these viruses later. Both my pediatrician and our consult said that since it's his first winter in day care, this is not out of the ordinary. This second pedi also drew his blood to check for allergens and antibody levels. We're going to an immunologist in a few weeks. I'll also schedule an appointment with a naturopath to see what he/she can recommend. In the meanwhile, I'm so scared the docs are missing something and I'm so exhausted. When he's sick, he doesn't sleep and therefore I don't sleep. I then have to scramble like mad to find someone to stay home with him because both hubby and I work full time and cannot take time off. This is so hard. Anyone have similar experience?

I am sorry, but it sounds like the school is not so clean or they are not following guide lines with washing their hands and toys. My son had same issues with ear infections and colds since he started daycare in September. Just colds and he would develope the ear infections because of them. We just this pass week had tubes put in his ears. He could hear so well now, and he is much happier. We did not even know there was a hearing problem since he spoke well for his age. Apparently this was going on we did not know it. You want to see an ear, nose and throat doctor for advice. Good Luck! :)

He'll either be sick now or in Kindergarten. Boosting an immune system is good for when germs are just "in the air" and the stronger your immune system is, the quicker he should rebound or get better.

Unfortunately (just like with swearing, attitude and a desire for all food unhealthly) when your kids is exposed to the general public germs aren't just 'in the air' so they will pick stuff up by direct contact.

You will find that your kid won't miss as much kindergarten (which is more important anyway). And although this is very frustrating for all of you, it's pretty typical and normal.

This has been a HORRIBLE year for illness. Much worse than previous years. Did he get a flu shot? How about the one for pneumonia?

Just to make you feel better - a girl in my office just had to leave today to pick up her son and will be out tomorrow.
Unless you are a stay at home mom who then homeschools (so very little direct contact with mass amounts of kids), unfortunately, this is how it works. It is frustrating. Hopefully your work is fairly understanding.

Good Luck!

Wow - this is awful! Poor little guy and poor you! You mentioned vitamins; many vitamins have little potency, so if you were giving him synthetic vitamins, they probably didn't absorb much. Are you using green cleaning products at home? Chemical cleaners could be irritating his respiratory system, making him more susceptible to germs and illness. My family has noticed huge, positive changes in our health since getting on superior supplements and using non-toxic products in our home and on our bodies. Happy to share more - just say the word. Good luck to you!

Before my daughter started preschool she would occasionally get a cold and that was about it. When she started preschool, right before she turned 3, she was sick all the time. She would literally get over a cold and then a week later she would have another one, or an ear infection or strep throat. This went on almost nonstop for the first year that she was in preschool. After the first year things started to improve. I believe it's from a combination of things - her immune system grew stronger, she stopped sucking her thumb, she's gotten better about washing her hands and she doesn't put things in her mouth anymore. She's 4 1/2 now and she still gets sick but it's not all the time like it was before. The first year my daughter was in preschool I went through all of my sick time being home with her and I ended up having to use a bunch of my vacation time to stay home when she was sick too. The time or two that I was actually sick I just had to work through it because I couldn't afford to take time off for myself. I know it's not easy but you're not alone and things will start to get better soon. :)

what vitamins is your son on? Have you researched the brands. not all vitamins are created equal.

I know you are exhausted but you are doing all the right things to try and help your baby. Keep plugging away.

My oldest son was a bit like this until I quit my job and stayed home with him. I'm not saying you should do that! I didn't know about vitamins and minerals in those days. Don't give up. I believe you will get past this.

Sounds just like what I have experienced. Our four year old was sick with ear infection end of january, went on amoxycillin for a week. The next day he had high fever again, this time it was a throat infection. Was on erythromycin for a week. The doctors say its natural to have infections while in pre-school. I am totally with you. Please keep us posted on what happens at the naturopath.

I totally relate. I have 2 kids, so I feel like in the winter, one is always sick.
Only thing I can suggest is hand washing like crazy. Ask day care how often they make every kdid wash their hands.

I feel you pain. My daughter is 19 month old today and she has been on antibiotics 27 times. She is sick all the time and she didnt even go to school until August. She was getting sick staing at home with my Nanna. She got tubes in her ears when she was 6 months old. She has been to an allergy doc and she is allergic to several foods with the worst being milk. Now that we have taken her off milk she is doing better but she still gets sick once a month. Right now she has bronchitis and Strep. So I know what you are going through. With my daughter it is just going to be up to her to get her immune system built up. The good thing is it is better for them to be sick now insted of later. You can message me if you have anymore questions or if you need support. God Bless!!!
