Toddler Scratching Top of Buttock

Hi. Has anyone experienced their toddler scratching the top of their buttocks until it's red and almost bleeding? He scratches up near the waist band of his Huggies diapers. Now, it's sort of bumpy and very red. I've read online that this may be a sign of pinworms. He's not scratching down by his Anus...but up at the top. Has anyone had a similar experience with their toddler?

So What Happened?

So, we went to the doctor today. It was what I expected...pinworms. It's apparently very common in toddlers. It is very contagious...and he could have got it one of many many playdates, etc. So, we got a prescription for him. It should clear up in a few days. In addition, everyone in the household has to be treated, as it's that contagious...so my husband and I purchased over the counter "Pin X". It's a one dose medication for us and our son.

I have. For my toddler it was eczema & folliculitis. My doctor said to try neosporin, over the counter hydrocortisone and a heavy eczema lotion like eucerin. They are all harmless if that's not the problem. If none of that helps, I'd talk to his pediatrician.

my son does this where his underwear bands are. Try lot's of moisturizer. With dry weather, that elastic rubbing right there it can just irrate that area. Pinworms itch in the anus and internally, like if you didn't wipe well. I would think it could be an allergy to his diapers too, try other brands or a larger size that isn't so binding.

my son has really dry skin and he had really bumpy patches right around where you are describing. i think the waist band was irritating his skin. i have been puttin a mild lotion on him lately and he seems to be better. maybe your guy is irritated by the waist band too?!

My daughter did that too and she did it so bad that she drew blood more than once. I think it was from a combination of dry skin and just realizing that she could stick her hand in her diaper. I got the new multipurpose Desitin it's for dry skin and it's clear. I would put that on her morning and night and I put her in onesies. That really worked and once i started doing that she didn't even try to itch.

He mightbe having problems withthe waist band. It might not let his skin breath or he might be allergic to something.

Maybe switch diapers. My friend's little boy was allergic to Luv's and Huggies and had to switch to Pampers.

My just turned two-yr old does the same thing. When I put lotion on it seems to be better. I also thought allergies at first, but she scratches herself only in that area.

My 2 year old would son scratches ALL the time until the point he would be bleeding and have scratch marks sll over. Try buying a nurishing lotion like Aloe or even a eczema cream. He might just have really dry skin. Even if you apply lotion after bath time or before bedtime your sons skin could still be very dry, even if it feels silky soft.

Does he show any skin irritation, red bumps, dry rough patches of skin. It could be eczema. If you are truly concerned about the sratching talk to your pediatrician.

It doesn't sound like pin worms. If he did have worms he would be VERY uncomfortable at night, their favorite time to come out. That is when their host is the most calm and still so they come out. Also, if he did have worms there's a pretty good chance you'd see one around his anus or in his diaper.

Good luck.
