We are needing to move my 19 month old daughter out of her crib soon to accomodate our new baby due in December. We have a toddler bed...but was just wondering if they are really better than a big kid bed with rails.

What can I do next?

I would leave her in the crib and use a bassinet for the baby until the baby is perhaps 3 months old. Unless she is climbing out of the crib, I would keep her there. Life changes once they are in their own bed and then can get out and often do quite a lot - just a thought.

I moved my 13 month old daughter to a full bed. We had moved to a new place and she went thru a hospital visit (dehydration) after that she really creamed as soon as we put her in crib..she probably remembered her hospital stay.

We were forced to move her out and we had nothing else so we moved her to guest bed with wall on one side and a giant tiger on other. She and we were fine. Did not ever fall or wake ____@____.com is still on that bed and fine..33 month now..

Every child and home is different see what works for you!

I would say get a big kid bed & rails. When the new baby is ready to get out of the crib he/she can go to the toddler bed so your daughter isn't jealous of having to give up her bed for the sibling. They have enough rivalry all their lives; make it easy on yourself when you can mom.

I didn't like the toddler bed because we can't lay down with him at bed time, or snuggle in bed to read books.

We only used the toddler bed because I had purchased it when he was an infant. We used it for a short time before I put him in a big bed with rails. I like the rails that can fold down out of the way.

so i went through the same thing. my daughters are 21 months apart. this is what i did and it worked. i changed the crib to a toddler bed so she could get used to it. she LOVED IT. it was small she could get in and out, and it had the guard, so there was only a little space she could get in and out. to keep her in it, the first few nights were tough. we stood outside her door, took turns and told her to get back in bed. sometimes for like an hour or more. but she got the point. she didnt see us so she didnt know we were there. she got the point.
then, we got her an elmo bed spread, her favorite, and put it on the other bed in teh other room. she kept going in to look at it. and then i finally said, about two weeks before the baby came, you wanna sleep in a big girl bed now with elmo? LOVED IT. so we have the twin bed without the frame, but with the box spring. worked like a champ. we brought her things int eh room right away and hung them, so she got to help to make it HER Room. she still stays in bed, most of the time. then we changed the toddler bed back to the crib, and then it was a baby bed again for her little sister. hope it helps
good luck

Hi , When I moved my 1st out of his crib at 13mnth (2nd was due) we went to Ikeas and bought one of thier twin beds , its alot lower to the ground so if they were to out its only inches , I personally put the rails up to prevent him from falling but as a mom said I could lay down with him . I purchased the ikea mattress ( thinner then a standard matress ) he used that matress for about 2yrs and then we bought your standard matress . Best choice for us .

We went to straight to a regular twin bed (no rails) with all three kids. We put a quilt or pillow on the floor next to it (since we have wood floors) for a few nights. They have never really fallen out. We moved our twins when they were almost 2 and our son when he was 18 mo.

I moved my son very early out of his crib. He was climbing out so I had no choice. I moved him directly to a regular bed with a rail. I didn't want to spend the money on a toddler bed for a short time. He did fine climbing in and out and I never worried about him falling while he was sleeping since I had the railing. Good luck and congratulations on the new addition soon.

We did not use a toddler bed for either one of our kids and both were successfully in a twin bed by 21 months. I am not really sure what the purpose of a toddler bed is. If you have rails a twin should be just fine.

When my son was 18 months I switched him to a toddler bed. I thought it was best since he could climb in and out of it on his own and make him feel like he has more independance. He LOVES his toddler bed. I plan on keeping him in it for probably a year or so. I dont suggest you keep her in the crib, my Ped told me to move him out of his crib at least 6 months before you plan on putting the new baby in the crib. I am due in Jan. We moved him early but he was ready. He has never climbed out at night or fallen out of his toddler bed. Good Luck!

since you have a toddler bed, you may as well use it. personally, we went straight to a twin bed when my son was 20 mo. to avoid extra cost and extra transition.

you could do a mattress on the floor for a while if you're worried about your daughter falling out.

If you have the toddler bed, I would use it. We had our twins in Toddler beds at about 2 years old. They loved them and we used them for 2 years. We probably could have waited event longer to transition them, but found a good deal on twin bunk beds by accident and could not resist. We will be moving our other daughter to a toddler bed in the next two months.

We went straight to a regular bed with rails - they aren't going to roll off and they figure out how to get off the end pretty quickly. Why bother with an extra transition?

My son moved to a toddler bed just b/4 turning 2. I personally think an actual twin bed w/ rails is too much for a child younger than 2. I guess it depends on how your child sleeps, though. My son flips back & forth at night (head where feet were, & vice versa). I would be worried about him falling out of a twin bed...especially being so high off the ground. He loves his toddler bed (crib converted to toddler bed). I'll keep him in it for as long as he is happy in it...probably 2-3 years at least.

I did a regular bed on the floor next to mine for awhile once my son was 17 months. Then the regular bed with rails on both sides, it was fine and no worries still at 3 years old.

Toddler beds are a waste of money...IMO. I did what the other mom's here did. We moved our daughter to a twin mattress on the floor with pillows all around it. That was when she was 10 months old (she hated her crib and screamed when I tried to put her in) and she has only rolled off the bed maybe 3 times at the most. She's 19 months now and it works great. She never gets out and causes any trouble in her room or anything. She needs the extra room of a twin because she moves around a lot.
