We put a twin mattress on the floor when my son was 18 mo. I thought a toddler bed was a waste of money, and my husband felt better knowing he couldn't fall out of bed. When he got older we bought a bed. He loved it! Really felt like a big boy.

we just used the mattress from the crib for the toddler bed it's the same size so why do you have to buy new mattresses and frames?

You use crib mattresses for toddler beds. Get them from Craigs llist--actually, toddler beds are a waste. How old are they? Can you leave them in their cribs longer (til 3 or 3.5) and save the money for twins?
Can you find twin beds on craigs list?

Have you heard of freecycle.org? People (and you) can request and offer things you no longer have a need for FREE. I just received a 3 in 1 crib with mattress this week. Its not new but it is in excellent condition. Regardless of where you get it from craigslist, freecycle or resale shop you just never know what your getting until you see for yourself. I wouldnt buy a toddler bed new unless thats your preference.

I got my daughter's toddler bed from craigslist for $25 including the mattress. I already had a matress from her crib though, so I just used ours and sold the other one for $10, making my total cost $15 for the bed! She's been in it since she was 22 months, so it's been over a year now and I have to sleep in it with her sometimes (she has night terrors) and it holds up great! I got her the Cosco white plastic one. If you need new mattresses, they sell them for $25 new at Walmart. We've had ours for 3 years and it's still in great condition.

What about just getting/putting the mattress on the floor?
That would be cheaper as well.... and you won't have to buy frames etc.
That's what we do for my son.

Make sure the mattresses/beds are clean!
Bed-bugs...are epidemic now... across the country.

with toddler beds you use the crib mattress, you prob already have. I picked up a toddler bed someone was throwing out, cleaned it up and put his crib mattress on it. he used it for years.Yes check out Craig's list and rummage sales and garage sales I'm sure you'll find two!
If you get a used mattress Just INSPECT It carefully! bed bugs are visible!

we bought my daughter a nice twin off of craig's list, but we had to buy the mattresses separately. I would be mostly afraid of mattresses off of craigslist than the bed frames themselves.

How old are the girls? Would it be strange to get them just 1 twin bed until you can afford another? My brother and I shared one for a while, where he slept at one end and I slept at the other, we were so little we barely got in each other's way.

When I was a bit older my sister and I shared a full size bed.

most mattresses that size are actually plastic on the outside (to be waterproof) so just disinfect with clorox and wipe with wet rag after... I think you'll be just fine. I'd buy to toddler beds off craigslist as well - why not? It saves you some money and they hold up really well.

I personally wouldn't want a mattress that someone else has slept on from craigslist for my babies (germophobia) but have you thought about breaking down the cribs and using the matress on those?
