Toddler Allergy Testing

My son is 2 years old, and his pediatrician is setting up an appointment for him with an allergist to be tested. I suspect he's allergic to soy, and he's had a bad reaction to peanut butter. I was wondering if anyone has had their toddler allergy tested, and if you could tell me how the test was done. Do they only test them for what you request, or do they do a standard testing? Could he be tested for food allergies and animal allergies at the same time? (We suspect dog/cat allergies too). I'm interested in hearing about your experiences. TIA!!

What can I do next?

My son just had an allergy test done yesterday, because he is only 13 months old and can't lay on his back for that test they just took the blood out of his arm and we will find out the results in 48 hours. My son has horrible eczema and it only seems to be getting worse and we wanted to make sure that allergies wasn't causing it/making it worse. They were going to test for pet, food and dust mite allergies. He did scream and they had to keep him from moving which he didn't like but it didn't take that long and hopefully hes too young to remember anything. good luck!!

My son had to have that done almost 2 yrs ago. They'll have you take off his shirt and lay on his tummy generally they'll test for all differnt kinds of allergies pet, food, enviormental. Then they'll bring in what my son calls the claw and press it on his back (this does not feel real good) it pokes the different allergines in his skin then he'll have to wait 30 min on his tummy to see which spots have a reaction. if it get red and bumpy thats what he's allergic to, his back will probably get itchy. It's not the most fun thing to do for your son or you! But it found allergies in my son I didn't even know he was allergic to. Good luck and just remember Ice Cream can fix any boo boo :)

My 2 year old got tested a month ago and we'll be going for a check up in 2 weeks. They asked me her symptoms, etc.. The test consisted of one 6inch plactic poker, though it does not poke her. It had 6 different allergens on it and then another as a "base" that will appear as though she was allergic, a placebo so to speak. She had to lay on her tummy for 30minutes, they had a tv in the room so she watched that, though once the stuff dries she could sit up as long as she didn't touch her back or move around alot. I forgot, the thing they use on the back has no needles but is like very mild sandpaper, they just have to get under the skin, there is no blood, and my daughter didn't even notice that they did it, and she's a drama queen! The test consisted of these allergies: milk, dust, dust mites, animal, and 2 others ( I forget) they also had blood drawn to test for everything else. My little one is allergic to dust which just meant cleaning with a hepafilter vac, a hepa filter in her room, etc. They should give you a packet on tips on how to keep your house and enviroment allergy free. She'll get tested again in 6months to a year because she did show some signs to dust mite allergies which means pulling up all of the carpet and getting noncloth furniture, there's alot that goes along with that allergy. If you have anymore questions send me a message I'll be happy to answer. We went to Dr. Kishore at children's, he was absolutely fantastic!

Hi A.. when my son was almost 2 the dr and i thought he might be allergic to peanuts. they did a "prick/scratch" test on his back for everything that is considered the most frequent allergies. (animal, peanuts, strawberries, pollen) i am not sure if every dr does that...but ours did. he was allergic, but has since grown out of it (he is now 3)
Good Luck!

I don't know about food, but my 17 month old was allergy tested last week for dog cat and others for a total of 19 allergens. They put an eyedrop of the allergen on the back, then poke it a little. I had it done' to myself at the same time and it doesn't hurt at all. Results in 15 minutes. We went to Dr. Panuto in North Olmsted, although he has several offices. He was great!

Hi A., we have been dealing with allergies for almost two years now, food and environmental. At first they did a blood test which I hear is the most accurate, we had to go to the hospital because our son went into anaphylaxic shock from eggs. Then when when we went to the Dr. they did the standard scratch test.He was allergic to eggs, dairy, shellfish and fish. Now he is only allergic to eggs and we have to avoid pea nuts. I suggest bringing things to keep your child occupied while the test is being done. I found the best web site for food allergies at the Stanford University children's hosp. web site. At first dealling with food allergies can be hard but I carry all ingredients my son can NOT have in my purse so I know what to avoid.
Good Luck, N.

A.,
When our daughter was 2 we went to the allergist too. She is allergic to soy, oats, peanuts & dogs & cats. It was the standard prick the back test and they did 3 intradermal to check positive results. The allergist tested for something like 50 things at the first visit. I'm assuming the things they tested her for were recommended by her pediatrician. It was 9 trays with 6 substances on each tray which made it pretty quick as far as how they stick them in the back. The first visit was the easiest. We go every 6 months to be retested and now she knows what's going to happen so it's hard to keep her from getting upset. I don't know if they would test for things that you request or if simply test for what your pediatrician recommends. Good luck! I hope all goes well.
