I am so saddend today and need answers. My friend was pregnant, had a seizure (out of the blue) and died! She did not have any kind of brain disorder or sickness that causes seizures. As far as I know she was healthy and very happy. Its crazy, she had just posted on facebook last night! And today she is gone. A beautiful healthy young 29 yar old woman is dead. Now they said they were doing an obtopsy to find out why but..I was doiing some research on the computer about a condition called eclampsia. That eclampsia causes seizures that can lead to major mdical problems, seizures or a coma in which the baby and mother could die. It also said that preclampsia can lead to eclampsia. if left untreated. Now my question is...if she had preclampsia would her doctor have known about it? With preclampsia, is it possible for your blood pressure to just shoot way high all of a sudden or is it gradual? can it be controlledby medicine? I was reading and it said that the case for preclampsia s unknown. Its just something that pregnant women can get. Do you know of any other things that causes seizures while pregnant?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for evertyhing. She was 7 months pregnant...my heart is so heavy right now that words cant explain. And to make matters worse, she didnt have life insurance. So the family set up a memorial fund at the bank for donations toward her funeral. Alot of people dont think about life insurance when being young and healthy. But death has no age, you never know when yhoure gonna go. Thats why you have to enjoy everyday, live life to the fullest and live everyday as if it were your last. Im the type of person that can catch an atttude quick, will tell you off in a second but can be very loving. This horrible tragedy have taught friends and I a lesson. Treat others the way you want to be treated. You may not see that person tommorrow and then you will feel bad about your last encounter with that person. My hubby and I have life insurance but the kids dont..we're going to take some out on them immediately

I was a month and half shy of delivering, was swelled up like a sausage feet, hands, face just what pregnant women do right they get fat and puffy. the Nurse practictioner took one look at me and told me we were going to the hospital.

I was on bed rest for 2 weeks while they monitored the protein levels in my urine. I had to practically stay on my left side.

they ended up inducing. and everthing was fine despite now having a preemie,
i accidentally got pregnant 9 mo later, and had no trouble at all with my DD's birth.

Dh when through quiet the time of being scared out of his witts though worrying about me.

sorry to hear of your friend! I can't answer why her Doc didn't catch it, it could be possible that it does just click on, but i don't know for sure.

When I had it, my blood pressure was wonderful throughout and the day I went into the hospital, it was sky high and they induced immediately. I also had to be put on Magnesium drip overnight because thye were worried I would start seizing. Pre-e is usually best helped by magnesium and immediate delivery of the baby if that fails to help mother or her blood pressure gets too high. Almost always, as soon as the baby is delivered, their symptoms start to go down, including blood pressure and seizures. I am sorry for your loss, that is so sad. :(

I am sorry for your loss.

I had preeclampsia with my daughter. A t a Friday checkup they asked me to call in with my BP on Monday morning. Then they had me come in, and after a quick check up they sent me to the hospital and induced labor. It took about 3 weeks for my BP to drop back down.

This time around (I am 26 weeks pregnant) I check my BP at home every other day or so. My doctors are also monitoring for other symptoms and if anything goes into the high normal range, we will monitor more agressively to make sure it does not silently sneak up.

And yes it does sneak up, and the doctor might not have known. You did not say how far along she was, but even with weekly appointments her BP, urine, weight gain etc. could all have been within the normal or high normal range. It can be that sudden.

Eclampsia and HELPP a variant thereof are the only things I am aware of that would cause a seizure (but I don't know what I don't know).

Again I am sorry for your loss and will say a prayer for her, her family and her friends.

I am so very sorry for your loss of a friend and for her family and I know it's such a shock to all at her age and with the excitement of a baby on the way. My aunt had this in another country and they missed it and she was in the hospital for some time but the baby was small and getting no nurishment due to that condition and she is fine but a bit dyslexic they say. I think it seems it can come on where a doctor can notice and treat it and also maybe just in a short time. My doctor said the mayo links are good when some of the info out there is not accurate so here is one from Mayo.

This one is postpartum but someone mentioned it on here too.

Again, I am so sorry for this loss and for the family too.

I have never had preeclampsia, but my heart went out to you and your friend's family after reading your post. The thought of preganancy killing women has gotten to be a foreign concept to us these days.

I suffered from Post-eclampsia and was misdiagnosed mutliple times before being diagnosed. and Yes! the BP can shoot up in no time. At my worst my BP went up to 239/127 at the ER

I am very, VERY lucky that I did not have a seizure. I mean EXTREMELY LUCKY!

I prayers to your friends family. Too young to pass away :(

BTW I woke up one morning and took my massive ammounts of BP meds that were keeping my pressure under control and my BP dropped so low I passed out...after that day my blood preassure has been perfectly normal!
CRAZY

I am so very sorry about your friend ~ I am sending you my deepest condolences.

I was put on partial bed rest at 30 weeks and full bed rest at 32 weeks and admitted into the hosptial at 34.5 weeks b/c of my pre-eclampsia. I had a fabulous doctor who took very good care of me. I did deliver at 35 weeks via emergency c-section. The signs and symptoms did not happen quickly or overnight. It started with high blood pressure that continued to rise, extreme swelling and eventually organs started to shut down and I also had some swelling of the brain. It's pretty scary stuff. My son was born happy and healthy but it did take me awhile to recover. I didn't realize how sick I really was until after my baby was born and I was trying to recover.

I do not know much to be honest, they were watching me for it during my pregnancy - I apparently had a lot of symptoms, but I know it occurs and I know it is dangerous. I am sorry you lost your friend, maybe out of this you can help educate people on this condition and become an advocate for it.

That is so sad!

I will say, that I didn't have preeclampsia until the last week of my pregnancy... then my blood pressure went up. I was put on a modified bed rest, and told to stay on my left side as much as possible.

When I went into labor, my blood pressure absolutely skyrocketed! They gave me an IV drip of Magnesium (I think that's what it was...) which hurt like hell, but it brought my pressure down. So for me, it was a fairly sudden thing.

I am very sorry for your loss. Words cannot express how sorry I am. How far along was she? I hope you get the answeres you are looking for.

Some people have symptoms early (high bp) and some don’t show anything till closer to delivery.

When I had my first ds, I was placed on bed rest due to preeclampsia and was placed on medication. I delivered him 6 weeks early due to extreme high blood pressure (170/200). I was given Magnesium while in the delivery room and they were afraid I would have a seizure. Delivered my son by emergency C section and didn’t see him for almost 48hours due to complications (he and I). My blood pressure dropped after a few weeks after delivery and of medication. A year later I was pregnant with my dd. They monitored my bp all along and placed me on bed rest to prevent bp from getting out of control. Never had any crazy readings and I monitored it at home. I was able to control it without medicine. I delivered her at 38 weeks. While in the hospital my bp was out of control and I had eclampsia which was monitored very closely. I was placed on medicine and monitored until my 6 week checkup. All was good after a few months.

OMG! I'm soooo sorry about your friend and the baby.

I hope you get the answers you are looking for. I'm sure it could possibly be other things too.

As far as pre-eclampsia, the symptoms can be masked as regular pregnancy symptoms. But the biggest signs are high blood pressure, swelling, dizziness, blurriness in vision, and protein in the urine.

I went in for a regular 37 week appt., and I think I had symptoms for almost a week before that. I had my first that night by c-section after the doctor checked me over. I was also put on magnesium.

With baby number 2, I had signs of pre-eclampsia AFTER I left the hospital....which is very rare. The nurse said she just had a friend die 5 days post delivery because it, and she ran me through the ringer before she dismissed me that night. Very grateful she did.

Let us know, please.
