Tips on How to Clean Grill Grease from Concrete

Hi- need some quick advice-my husband forgot to clean out the grease trap in his grill which stands on a concrete slab. We now have three bigger than dinner plate sized grease spots on our otherwise clean concrete. I am looking for non-toxic ways to eliminate them. We have a dog and two kids, so I don't want to chance harsh fumes, etc. Has this happened to anyone else?

What can I do next?

Don't know if this will work or not but someone once told me to take dawn dishwashing soap with baking soda and put on it, add water and take some sort of brush and scrub it out.
I havent' tried it yet but let me know how it goes if you try it.

Go to your local harddware store and aske what they recommend. You might try pouring paint thinner then pour Chlorox. S.

Hi J..
It looks like you have gotten a lot of advice. I do know cat litter absorbs spills. You may have already tried Dawn since many suggested that. I was at dinner the other night with a nurse who complained that her car leaked oil on a patient's driveway and the father used Greased Lightning with success, to clean it up.
Good luck...

I would put kitty litter on first to absorb as much as possible, then try the dish detergent. Finally a good power washing spray will get out whatever is left. Best wishes!

A few years ago in Cinncinnati, a tanker truck carrying some sort of grease had an accident on the highway and they couldn't figure out how to clean it. Proctor and Gamble's home offices are there and they sent a tanker of Dawn dishwashing liquid to clean it up. It did the trick! Don't think you will need a tanker, but Dawn will clean it. Good luck!

Sprinkle it with dry clean kitty litter or a large amount of baking soda to absorb as much grease as possible, then scrub with a brush and Dawn.

we just pressure washed our concrete patio, and it removed everything. tree sap, mildew and yes, grill grease. our grill also sits on the patio and we had the same problem. we borrowed a pressure washer from my dad, but i think that you can rent them from places like ace, or home depot. if you have an especially stubborn spot that sill looks odd, cover it with baking soda and let sit for an hour or so, and then pressure wash again. the baking soda will absorb any left over grease and wash away clean.

Dawn dish detergent or simple green. If there is still a lot of liquid you might soak it up with something...flour, baking soda.

Hi J.,

I have two words for you: Simple Green. It comes in a spray bottle or you can buy it concentrated and add your own water and make as much as you like. It even cleans up motor oil. It is safe for kids and pets, but I would be sure to rinse well afterward. You may have to treat it and let it sit for awhile before you rinse, depending on how long the stain has been there. Good luck! L.

Try cat litter to soak it up. Really grind it in with your foot and let it sit there awhile, then sweep it up. You can add about 1/4 cup of 20 mule team Borax to really spruce it up as well, no fumes.

Be careful when using a pressure washer, you always have to keep the stream moving otherwise you'll eat away your concrete or wood surfaces - they're very powerful.

I would use Thieves Household Cleaner, which you can buy from me here http://TheVeryEssence.com - this cleaner has no chemicals and is extremely effective, it's the only cleaner I have in my home, and I even use it in place of laundry detergent and bleach (you can read more about it here: http://aromatherapy4u.wordpress.com/thieves/ )

If you are looking for a safe, but effective degreaser, you should try Basic H2 from Shaklee. It is amazing.

http://www.shaklee.net/lthigpen/product/00015

It is superconcentrated. I have had the same 16 oz bottle for over a year and have only used half of it. I use it for every cleaning purpose around my house. It is safe for use around kids, pets, people with allergies ,etc.

Just mix it according the the directions for the right job. It cleans windows, flat-top stove, mopping, all-purpose, kitchens, baths, grills, out-door patio furniture. you name it, it can clean it well!

I hope this helps.

My husband did the same thing. We put cat litter on the spot to absorb what we could. Then we scrubbed with original Dawn dishwashing and sprayed off with a powerwasher. That did the trick!

I've used the cat litter trick in the past, and then power washed it. But the Dawn would likely break up the grease even quicker, and you'd know your concrete was squeaky clean!! <s>
Another thing to try is vinegar and baking soda, followed my a pressure wash to the concrete.
