Tips for Cheap Long Distance and International Calls??

I don't know if it's just me or others feel the same - but i am sick of "overpaying" the phone companies for phone calls!! We have a home phone with att which i am happy enough with, but i pay $6 month to get inter-state calls for 5cents, and $5 month to get international calls cheaper. Our phone bill seems to be getting more and more expensive for nothing - and that's not even complaining about all the taxes, surcharges and other "fees" they seem to get away with charging!!
My question is: does anyone know a company or access number to call, which makes calls for a penny a minute, or a little more, with a small fee if necessary. I am not wanting to change from att particularly, but have heard there are phone numbers you can dial before you dial your contact, which bills through att, or someother way. You can use your home phone or mobile. I want something relatively easy to use and not tooooo long winded. I have thought about prepaid calling cards, and have googled on the topic - now just a teensy confused though, so if any savvy mommies are already saving, i hope you will not mind sharing.

We had Vonage and we liked it a lot. They just announced free international calling. I don't know if that is for a short time or not but they are not one of those companies that lures you in and then changes things. They pride themselves on keeping things the same. We did get rid of it but only because we disconnected our house phone completely we went all cellular. It saved even more.

My mom uses one of those cards. It is a bit confusing but very very cheap. YOu have to type in a phone number, then the number you want to call and then a long number for your account. She swears by it.

We use Vonage (Hubby's family lives in Ireland and my bf lives in Canada). We still have ATT, as we need a DSL line to run the Vonage over. It's saving us a bit of money because the calls to Ireland and Canada are free. YOu may want to check into that.

we have vonage........its $25 amonth & covers a lot of interntional calls, check if your country is one of them............you will need a dsl line like comcast or att but if you have a computer then you probably already have dsl......vonage just connects to the dsl & you can make calls to anywhere anytime for the same low price of $25

AT&T has some plans on their website that are better than when you call and ask for plans. We got one that's unlimited local and long distance, and after taxes and everything our bill is $55/mo. Not cheap, but it's better than what we were paying.

Another option is Skype. I don't have it but know friends who do. Some of these friends are overseas and use it to keep in contact with family in the states on a regular basis. I looked at the website and didn't think it was worth it for us, as it's most effective if the person you're calling downloads Skype as well, then you can talk through your computer with a little video camera. It also will dial people not on Skype for a fee, but those fees aren't bad.

One of my neighbors whose wife has family in Europe was just telling me last weekend that they save a lot with Vonage. They use AT&T for their local phone provider.

www.justvoip.com for international calls is great. It's free for landlines and it's very cheap for cellphones. Except you will receive an out of state number to call first. But you can call from your cell. At home I use T-mobile thorough internet for $10/month. I think it's a great deal, since they let me call unlimited every month. (local or long distance).

Feel free to message me for more info.

My cell have free long distance calling so we use that for domestic. For international calls, my mil lives in Mexico, we buy calling cards. You can use ###-###-#### or ###-###-#### or one of those other numbers to dial and then get billed on your ATT billing but they are not very reliable and the cost is not as low as they sometimes say in their commercials. If you go to a true dealer (not a convenience store or gas station) and ask them what the best card is for your calls, they can make a recommendation. For $5 or so depending on the card, my husband can talk to his mom for a couple of hours.
