Tipping? - Chicago,IL

Im just curious. I was at a C. Style food walk up stand next to most of the other standard fast food places. There was a tip jar on the counter. I used my debit card and there was a line for adding a tip to your total. I went to a childs playplace (equal to chuckee cheese) you order, wait for your number, pick up , make your drinks and cleaning up after yourself when you leave. Debit card again, another line for adding a tip. I'm not a cheapo, all for leaving a generous tip in full service restaurants, getting my hair done, etc. But is anyone else like wth? We are expected to tip on someone just ringing up your order and passing it to you? Do you moms add a tip for stuff like that??

What can I do next?

I don't tip for such service unless that at-counter service was absolutely amazing. I've had some folks give me excellent service at the counter before. But for just walking up and picking up an order, where there is nothing out of the ordinary? No.

No - it's just the way it prints out. I'm sure they love it if you tip, but I usually don't for counter service.

The line for the tip on the debit card receipt is hard bc then you're consciously making a decision to NOT tip. The jar is there but not so in your face. So I hate that line... I waitressed in my life so I'm a very good tipper but I don't consider pure take-out places the same as a sit down restaurant. Waitresses are barely paid anything on the clock - it's 90% tips. I don't think that's the case for people behind a register. But I tip sometimes. For instance, when it's a big and/or complicated order or they were super nice or like recently, there was one poor guy so overworked. Something happened and they were understaffed. So I felt bad for him...

As a rule I tip for services so if no service was provided then I don't tip.

I am with you on this one. We always tip well, but if I am basically doing all the work, there is no tip. So sorry. Even when I get carry out, I have decided not to tip. I walk in, someone asks my name and they run to the kitchen to grab the food OR another server drops it in the bar area for the them. I am not leaving a few bucks for that.

I wouldn't tip either unless its an extra large or difficult order.

I am a good tipper at sit down restaurants. I even tip for carry out at nicer restaurants. However, I would definitely not tip at a take-out place like that- most of the time, I'm getting take-out because I don't want to pay to go to a nicer restaurant and have to tip!
The one tip jar that really bothers me is Starbucks drive thru. They are making me a friggin' drink (a very overpriced one at that) and I am supposed to tip them?! Give me a break. Everyone wants a tip these days.

I think that the tip line might just be a part of the paperwork that comes through the machine - based on the company that the store uses for their credit card machine.

When I see those (Like in the cafeteria at work) I draw a line through the tip part and put the total on the bottom.

If it's self service or I'm just picking up food, I don't tip. I've worked at a bar where people would pick up food and that's it, and I didn't expect to be tipped. Now, if I had a drink while I was waiting for the food I was picking up, yes, I'd tip on the drink. Unless someone is actually serving/waiting on you, I don't think a tip is necessary. If you ask for a million extras (extra straws, napkins, ketchup, whatever), then that constitutes as being waited on, and yes, a tip is appropriate.

It is standard on many credit card machines. When we got a new one at the store the service man asked what kind we wanted. We don't need anything that allows tips so we got the one without the tip line.

If they do any type of service that tipping would be customary for they do not need two different types of machine. It would be awkward to say the least to have 2 different machines to run cards through. One that allowed tips for customers that might want to leave one and the other kids that did allow tips. Just total the card out at the bottom so that a person cannot add anything they want to it.

I always feel strange about this when I pick up pizza. I notice the tip line but don't use it, since I'm picking up. If there is a tip jar at a fast food place, I might put in a few coins if I'm paying in cash, but I don't add it to a debit or credit card transaction. I don't know if I am "right", but that's my system!

Just because there's a line to leave a tip, that doesn't mean you have to leave one. It's not an expectation. Just an option.

I consider myself a good tipper.. (25% to hair, tipping on takeout from a sit down restaurant, 15% to have food delivered, etc)... when's it's places like that, I just put a line through the tip and put whatever the total is..
