Tipping??

I am going to be staying at a fancy hotel with my family this weekend (we are piggy backing on my husbands business trip). I was wondering how much and when do you tip? Some of the things that I will need to tip for are, Valet parking, and taking the bags to the room for us.

What can I do next?

My understanding is valet is 10-15% and luggage is a $1 per bag. I've found that when I tip early on, I'll get better service later in the trip. Enjoy your vacation!

I travel extensively with my job - rule of thumb for bags is typically $1, unless it's extremely heavy or it's an 'odd' piece (for me, a display unit, for example) then I would tip $2. For valet, usually $2 for each in & out. And also, I typically tip housekeeping staff - usually just $1 each day (because they regularly change shifts) if I'm on my own or a couple of dollars if my family is with me (when the room typically gets messier). I hope this helps. Enjoy your time!

I know I'm cheap, but I usually do $1 per bag, or if they are heavy then I do $2 per bag (which I give them when the luggage is in my room). Also, don't forget to tip your cleaning staff. I tend to tip the the first day and the last day, if you are staying more than a night. I don't tip a ton, just depends on how big the room is and how much they do. I've never tipped valet, just because I have never used it, sorry.

We travel a lot and use high end hotels.
we give about $5-8 to the bellboy to bring up the bags. Valet should be between 3-6 each time. Also - your housekeeping needs to be tipped if they clean up your room daily. I leave $5 per day. Enjoy your stay.

IF you have an iphone, you can use the app to figure out the tips for you. Also - you can ask the concierge what an average tip is for a certain person.

K.; Good for you getting out of the house for "your weekend". I too feel that $1 per bag is fine, but that IS bringing it to your room, and when you leave, for the bellman to take it to Valet for you. Also $2 for Valet, but only when you pick the car up. We have been to hotel's accross the country, and have never tipped Valet when we drop the car off. As far as housekeeping, I find that tipping for one night isn't necessary, but if you call them for something, extra towels; glasses or perks such as toothpaste, etc., I always tip whoever brings it. If you're staying 2 or 3 nights, I agree that you should tip on the first morning that they clean, and $2 to $5 should be a good start, unless you leave a list of things you would like them to do or leave, then for sure leave them something a little extra. They WILL make sure they take better care of you and your family. Have fun! J.
