Has anyone had a thyroid abnormality during pregnancy? I am 12 weeks, and my initial blood tests showed that my thyroid levels were abnormal. I am seeing an endocrynologist on Wednesday, so I don't know if it's hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, or how severe, but thought I would ask here before my appointment.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Well turns out that my level is still abnormal, and the endocrynologist wants me to go on meds. My level is not terrible (I was told normal was from .86 to 1.9, and my level was .83). Going to start the meds tomorrow.

Thanks for the reassuring responses.

Yes, I did. I already have a Thyroid disorder and it was "off" while I was pregnant. I simply had to take medicine. Thyroid is very important during pregnancy, especially the first trimester. There is no need to fear if you get it treated. From what I remember reading and from my endocryn while I was pregnant, the only thing to fear about a thyroid disorder while pregnant is not getting it treated.

My daughter is nearly 4 now and very intelligent. She has no problems. I was medicated my 2nd and 3rd trimesters (didn't know I was pregnant until 14 weeks).

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do great!

I had hypothyroidism during my first three pregnancies. I had to take a pill daily. It had no side effects (or nothing that I could distinguish from regular pregnancy symptoms!). I was able to go off the thyroid meds between pregnancies, and now, with my 4th, my thyroid was normal through the first trimester. They will check again some time during the second and third trimesters but expect it to be fine this time. Don't worry!

Hi this is very common and very managable with a daily synthyroid pill. some people remain to have thyroid issues after giving birth and for some all issues go away. either way as long as you treat it everything is fine. the thyroid regulates all your hormones so it is very important to manage this with blood tests and meds until your levels are where they need to be. good luck.
