Thunder!!!

We are having an awesome thunderstorm right now. Personally, I LOVE a good storm!!! Luckily, my DD isn't scared of the noise. :) My grandma thinks I am crazy because I will turn off all the lights and sit at the window with a bowl of popcorn. She thinks it's dangerous, like the lightning is going to strike me through the glass... I'm sure that it is possible to get hit through the window... but not really all that likely. What do you mommas think? (Not about the likelihood of getting hit through the glass, but about watching thunderstorms.)

Sarah B... lol. I am pretty much the same there. I like a lot of lightning and thunder... but not so much the wind. If it's severe, I watch for signs of tornados. Especially since I just moved to Tn, where they actually HAVE tornados! lol. I'm an Idaho gal, where it is pretty much unheard of to get tornados. (except in recent years... but still pretty rare.)

What can I do next?

I like them to, We lived on the edge of Tornado alley though and have been through a few, including a supercell. Then it's not so much fun anymore. :( Luckily we never had any major damage.

I have a love / hate relationship w/ thunderstorms. I grew up in the country, sleeping on the second floor under an alluminum roof. That's loud. Did I mention it was part of tornado alley in my state? If there is a tornado around, it's probably going to be in my county or the one next to it.

Now I like to watch them, but also fear them. I am so afraid they won't detect a tornado in time and I won't have time to get my kiddo and myself down to the basement. I'm out of tornado alley and into the city where until about 8yrs ago there hadn't been a tornado in forever. The first one to hit the city after decades of not having one was less than a mile from me.

A regular thunderstorm, yes, I do enjoy those. However, severe thunderstorms cause me severe anxiety. My family always makes fun of me, because I will be pacing by the window, watching the skies for signs of impending tornadoes. I've never actually been in a tornado, so I don't really know where my fear stems from. But it seriously gives me knots in my stomach when there is the threat of severe weather.

I have heard them say that you should stay away from the windows during a severe thunderstorm. I'm not sure if that has to do with potential lightning strikes, or more the danger of something crashing through the window and hurting you, like a tree or something.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE thunderstorms. I will do the same thing, minus the popcorn perhaps, but I will open the blinds & turn off the lights so I can see the lightning light up the room I'm in. And for me the LOUDER the thunder, the better. In fact, I find I get a little tiffed if the storm is over too quickly.

I do keep an eye out on alerts and such, not a clueless storm watcher. I do often unplug things that aren't surge protected but as far as not showering or bathing, I don't do that. There was a time when pipes were far less insulated so the chances of getting shocked through them during a storm was higher, but not so much anymore. As far as windows, the only thing I'd be concerned about would be high winds & trees/tree branches. I think you're pretty safe from lightning coming through the glass.

None of my children are afraid of storms, probably because I would sit them in my lap to watch the storms.

We just had a wonderful storm blow through late last night & again this morning and all I could think was LET IT LAST ALL DAY!! LOL.

HAPPY storm watching!!

I love watching thunderstorms too! Better than TV! We have an amazing view of storms from our house, which I am very glad about because we can see a tornado coming before the sirens in our nearby town can sound. The stormchasers sit at the end of our driveway! That's my dream job.

Just for fun, we just had a rip roaring thunderstorm last week, followed by 10 inches of snow. Massive lightning and thunder and snow! It was a rare treat!

Hi R.,

Lightning can strike you through the roof of the house as well as through a window....as stated by Sarah, sitting at the window puts you at risk of something flying through it from wind. I used to be terrified of storms until I had lightning strike in front of me....twice.....one year apart to the day......I figured if it didn't strike me then, it probably was not going to and it was TOTALLY out of my hands. Popcorn sounds like a wonderful idea!

Love it! I moved to Northern Nevada from the California coast and the summer thunderstorms were awesome to behold. Our first house was on a hill and we could watch storms travel down our valley. We'd sit on the back porch until the storm was upon us and dash inside to avoid the rain.

Of course, it's ready to snow again right now, so I won't be seeing thunder for a while!

Looooove It! except for the flood factor and the lightening factor.... I love everything about them. The smell, the sound, the flashes of light, how everything seems to perk up and seems brighter... I would certainly join you!

if you are in torando alley you will learn to watch the storms. you will learn to identify the clouds that you need ot worry about but if you hear a continous roll of thunder that doesnt quit that is a tornado.

I love any good storm. Lightning, wind, rain. I get as close to them as possible. Been in a few earthquakes, but never more than about 6 point. I'd probably head for cover if I saw a funnel cloud, though.

Well, the storm you are speaking of just landed a bolt of lightening somewhere in our yard! the LOUD bang and the flash of light then our tv, phone, internet, alarm system, all went down and our garage door opened and got stuck with the motor running! Very scary! I do like rain, but not the thunder, it is too loud for me and apparently gets a bit too close sometimes! :o)

I love to watch thunderstorms!! To me it is very calming and relaxing. If there is a storm coming at night and I fall asleep I tell hubby if he is awake to wake me so I can enjoy the storm. I just love them and want to be outside or at the door enjoying them. I feel so renewed after a good storm.

LOVE big thunderstorms! Never been afraid of them, even as a 4 year old child - would just sit in front of the door or window and watch. Even now, I get excited if one is rolling our way - I start tracking it on the Weather Channel and everything.
