Thumbsucking/hair Twirling

my son is 4 years old and is a great kid-a little on the hyper side but is great. my problem is when it gets time to go to sleep or if he is not feeling well or insecure, he sucks his thumb and climbs on your lap and twirls your hair (his hair is too short) to the point of large knots and pain. I can't seem to get him to stop...any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My one year old has done sort of the same thing for the longest time. Except instead of the hair twirling, he sucks his thumb and holds on to his blanket. Not just any blanket, it has to have satin edges. It is so nice for them to calm themselves, however sometimes it would be nice for it to be simpler. I agree with the others, start substituting a blanket or stuffed animal....as long as it's something appropriate like that. Let me know what you figure out about thumb sucking!! LOL I think my lil guy will be doing that for a while! :) Take care!

try subing something else for the hair part. My son has his favorite blanket. It's actually his second one. The first one literally came apart in the wash, so I went to the fabric store. We had name it "Blue" because of the color, and I couldn't find one just the same so I found one that was blue with Thomas and we just started calling it "Blue". and he switched right over.

Maybe you can make one of those tie blankets with extra long ties. Then if he's sitting on your lap and wants to twirl your hair. face him away and give the blanket(or whatever sub) and redirect his hand to the item.

My daugher sucked her thumb untill she was around 12 when she was tired or sick. They usually out grow it and it does no good to try to disaplin them for it. The hair twising- I would put your hair back and not let him do it. he will be mad for a while but will be ok over time. just be constant and make sure nobody else in the family or a babysitter will allow him to do it with them. Being constant is the important thing.

She quit when she was 3 but started up again because of all the stress at the time we had twin girls born at 23wks and we lost one of then but ive talked to our pediatrican and he told me that when i see her suckin her thumb to say that if you are gonna suck your thumb then that must mean you are tired so that means you need to go to bed since then she only sucks her thumb at bed time so hopefully this helps you :)

Repetion is a very soothing and comforting thing for young children and its not a bad thing, unless its your hair he is using. I think that something kind of a stuff toy or blanket would work really good, but something that has something on it to twirl, like a bunny with long ears, or one of the fuzzy blankets with the cut edges. My daughter has this little pink bunny blanket that has a stuffed bunny with a rattle in it, on it. lol She lays in bed and plays with the ears too. Sometimes she just rattles it. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

First I would suggest tying your hair back or wearing a hat to foil his attempts at twirling your hair into knots! I had a nephew who used to do the same thing to me and he stopped when I changed my hair and cut it short! He turned to a toy instead that he would rub so maybe giving your son an alternative might stop him. My son likes to rub his blanket between his fingers when he is tired or cranky and I don't think there is anything wrong with having something to comfort himself with. Good luck!
