My son has had a very mild case of thrush for the last 2 months. We've gone through several rounds of nystatin. I keep bottles and pacifiers sanitized and I also use nystatin (cream). It won't go away and I don't understand cause it is only on his tongue. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone! After advice here and from my midwife, I adjusted my diet. After cutting out refined sugars and other carbs our thrush problems disappeared!!! Not to mention it is healthier for both of us. Thanks again!

Thrush is such a vicious cycle. My breastfeeding daughter got it and my nipples were killing me, so painful I thought I would have to stop nursing! We used the oral nystatin in her mouth and the nystatin cream on my nipples and maybe I wasn't as diligent as I should have been (I was pumping too, every morning), but it took probably 6 or 8 weeks of the medicines to finally clear up. My daughter's ped said that was very normal to take a long time to clear. Good luck!

if you are breastfeeding, you probaly have it and keep passing it back to him. both mom and baby should be treated for best results. you can try gentian violet, its messy but if nyastin isnt working, its time to move on. i have read several references saying nyastin doesnt work well, maybe over the years, the yeast has become resistant. anyway, my daugther was given flucozole(spelling), maybe as your doctor. also add vinegar to your wash, wash in hot, change breast pads very frequently, let nipples dry naturally after feeding. also acidopholus and grapefruit seed extract can help. you need to treat you both or it will be an everlasting cycle. good luck. both my kids had it, one was bottle fed with everything sterilized every single time, the other EBF- who knows!!!

diflucan is the same RX i had, generic

You may also have thrush(on your nipples) and that is why your baby's is not going away. This happened to me when my son was a newborn and the thrush would not go away with the Nystatin. After trying several remedies, i finally went with the guru breast feeding doctor's recommendation and gave my son diflucin. It immediately cleared up the problem.

Good Luck

I think you need to treat yourself for an internal yeast infection with a round of Diflucan and also start taking a probiotic (acidophilus) and eating lots of yogurt. You can also get a prescription for a probiotic for your son. It's called Florastor Kids and it's a powder that you can mix into their bottle. My doctor gives it to my son every time he is on antibiotics to prevent yeast buildup. It takes forever for this to go away unless you also change your eating habits in addition to the prescription. I would not use the gentian violet as some have suggested because recent research has linked it to cancer.

Hi C.,
I had the same issue when my daughter was 2 months old.. I had it on my nipples too. (very painful) The drs gave my daughter nystatin and I had to fight for Diflucan for myself from the OB. I did alot of research online and went to a lactation consultant.. the vaginal dose of diflucan isn't enough, I ended up taking 100mg every day for two weeks and it finally was better... The next time my daugther got it she was taking oral steroids for her hemangioma so the pedi gave her diflucan...That time it cleared up and I didn't seem to have it.. You can also take acidopholis, and grapefruitseed extract, and eat yogurt...
You can google thrush and breastfeeding and you will come up with alot of info... Good luck!!!

Try Gentian Violet. It's extremely messy, but it works - it's over the counter. Lightly swab it on his mouth 1 to 2 times a day, and your nipples if you'resometimes breastfeeding.

If you're exclusively breastfeeding, then the problem is YOUR diet, which is causing this overgrowth of yeast in your son. Stop eating all sugars, processed foods, alcohol, and grains that are not sprouted. Sprouted grain breads and pastas are readily available at your supermarket or health food store - Ezekiel bread and pasta, Berlin Natural Bakery Biblical sprouted bread, Alvarado Street Bakery sprouted bread, rolls, and bagels. Basically, you want to eliminate any foods that ferment in your stomach. Add in lots of good probiotics - yogurt and kefir (unsweetened of course, mixed with your own fruit), acidophilus supplements, even cultured butter (I like Organic Valley unsalted butter - made with cultured cream). East lots of protein and vegetables - even limiting sugar from fruit would be helpful to really wipe the thrush out of your son's system. Good luck!

I had it with my ds too.. so frustrating.. what i did which worked like a charm was use gentian violet. It is VEry messy and it stains but it works. you can get it at a health food store.. put some on a q tip and apply in baby's mouth and another application(different q tip)on your nipples. i would wear breast pads (not plastic disposables-use cloth or just get baby wash clothes and then throw out later).. again just be careful you don't get it on clothes as it stains..
this is not a drug and won't hurt baby..
after a couple of treatments, you may want to get some new bras
good luck

I also used the Gentian Violet. I couldn't even see the thrush in my daughters mouth...but my nipples were screaming!! I seriously thought cutting my nipples off with a kitchen knife would hurt less. 2 days later all was better....everyone was happy and still nursing 100%. I found it at the hospital pharmacy (but I believe most pharmacies will have it. Good Luck! Just put some on your nipples and let him nurse. I thought that worked better than Q-tips...no fuzzy pieces in his mouth and I found it less messy.

Our midwife told us to use Gentian Violet -- a type of dye ($3 at the pharmacy, OTC but you have to ask for it) that is supposed to take 3 days to clear up thrush. It sounds weird, but it worked for us. You paint it on your nipples 3 times a day before feeding, so it coats your nipples and the baby's sucking coats the inside of his mouth. It's a permanent purple dye, so very messy, but it works. You can search around on the internet or ask your pediatrician.
