Hello ladies,

I was wondering if you ladies could tell me if this is normal with sleeping in a three week old.... I have a four year old and I seem to remember him doing the same thing.

My three week old ds seems to go through boughts of very fitful sleep....moving all around grunting and making all kinds of noise...but his eyes are closed so it seems he is a sleep. Did any of your kids do this? Is it gas..because he seems to grunt and squirm and then let out gas or a BM and then stop or he quites down. We are cosleeping right now and it wakes me up because I feel him moving and making sound but as I said he's doesn't seem to be awake. I just wanted to see if any of you ladies have had a similar experience. Thanks!

What can I do next?

It's so normal. Babies (just like adults) have active/light sleep (REM sleep) and deep sleep. The active light sleep is the kind that you're talking about. If he stays asleep he's just moving in and out of light and deep sleep. It's not gas, it's just a lot of sleeping brain development.

For that very reason I put both my kids in their cribs early on. If they are really uncomfortable they will cry, but all that squirming and fussing will keep you awake when they are not awake. But to answer you question, yes it is normal, a bowel movement or gas or just processing the milk keeps those tiny little bodies active even while they are asleep. Congratulations on your new little guy :)

sounds completely normal. Both of mine did this until they were around 3 months old and we also co-slept. I also realized that babies have that reflex where they kick their feet when weight is put on them--like they're trying to walk. so when I was cuddling my babies at night their reflexes were making them kick their legs against me constantly if their feet were against me. Congratulations on your new baby!

We co-sleep also. My 15 month old still acts like that. I always say, he sleeps like a newborn!

Totally what I remember too - and I think they always woke up with a dirty diaper.

Mine did too. At 9 months old, he's still very wriggly. We call him Mr. Migration, as he seems to occupy every last bit of his crib by the time the night is through. Like teen mom, his noisy sleep habits and my fear of crushing him found him in his crib, in his own bedroom, very early on.

Enjoy your little one.

I would try a sleep wrap, my little ones would sleep so much better if they were wrapped. They used them until about 6 months old when they started breaking out of it.
Worked like a dream.

Check out the SwaddleMe. LOVED THEM. We had a few so that we could wash them every few days.
