Thoughts on the Name Gabriel

We are expecting our 3rd boy very soon. My other two boys are Elijah and Noah. In keeping with the biblical theme, we are considering Gabriel for this boy. Any thoughts - likes, dislikes, is it any easy target for bullying, etc?

What can I do next?

My daughter's high school boyfriend is named Gabriel and it's a completely normal, mainstream name here. He's was a football player and now in the army. My father's middle name is Gabriel as well.

I love the name Gabriel, personally. Other Biblical names I love are Micah, Zachariah, Samuel, and James.

I don't think any of these come as target/ bully names.

Oh my goodness, you cannot go wrong with Angel Gabriel, of course I love it. And flows perfectly with the other two.

i absolutely love it.
but i don't love the almost-inevitable diminutives. so if it were my boy, i'd refer to him by the full name and gently (not angrily!) encourage that others do so also.
i'm a little surprised by worry about bullying at this stage, and over a name. why would gabe or gabriel be singled out more than joe or adrian?
my bestie's beautiful name is 'gabriella'. of course it's shortened to 'gabby' which is not beautiful. but it's okay. she's still beautiful, so is her name, and i don't think bullying has ever been an issue.

Any name can be tease-worthy. I like the name and had a good friend in college who went by Gabe.

I can't think of a reason to bully a Gabriel.

Gabriel first makes me think Latin. Then angel and messenger.

I personally do not care for the name, but it is not my kid. I know for a fact there are people, in my own family, who do not like the names I picked out for my boys, but they don't get a say because they are my kids. Name him whatever feels right to you.

I love the name Gabriel.

My kids have had numerous friends through school, sports, etc. called Gabe. None of gone by Gabriel. My good friend's old boyfriend was another Gabe. Never went by Gabriel.

I don't know why that is - I like both, but I love Gabriel.

I never have heard kids remark on the name so I think it's a great one :)

In my opinion, it's a wonderful name, as is Gabe. I think it's also a good idea to give children a strong middle name to possibly use in case s/he doesn't like his/her own first name as s/he gets older.

I don't like it because I don't like names that can (and will) be shortened. Nobody is going to shorten Elijah or Noah, but Gabriel will be shortened to Gabe. What about Adam, Levi, Issac, Jacob, James etc.

Love it! I don't think it's a target for teasing; as mentioned before, any name is a target for teasing or bullying, but this one doesn't stand out.

What I like abut this one is that you can use Gabe for a nickname, and Gabriel has a nice ring to it for formal occasions-- baptisms, confirmation, school award ceremonies, wedding announcements or whatever formal occasion he has in his life.

I also like how you are keeping with the biblical names, but not totally common ones and not the ones that are way out there. Ii don't any of your kids getting teased because of their names. I love the names Elijah and Noah.

Congrats on your little one!

I like it, but if I were asked to think like a mean kid, here's what I could come up with off the top of my head:

Babe, Gabrielle, Azrael, Israel, Baby, Brie, Eel.

I wouldn't be too concerned about ugly nicknames. Any name can be twisted.

Best,
F. B.

Regarding the bullying thing. Don't think the name really matters. If they want to tease a child, they will. BTW...a young boy in my son's grade was very bullied and his name was John!!!

I personally don't like it... But only because I have known quite a few Gabes in my life and none of them would be stand up people in my opinion... However, they are not the bible Gabriel you are referencing.

I think the name is lovely. But has become very popular in the last 5 to 10 years. The nick name is fine too. I use to know a girl named Gabriel.

Gabriel is an angel's name as you know yet your other sons have men's names, perhaps you may want to consider this and name him after another patriarchical figure, such as Issac, Jonah, Abraham, etc.

Just sayin'

The very best to you and yours and have a happy, healthy baby

It's a great name -- in Hebrew, it means "strength of God" which ought to be enough to have him stand up to anyone for anything! I don't see bullying as an issue with most names, as long as the child's initials don't spell out something silly! And don't listen to people who say they only met slow or not "stand up" type people with this name! There are more and more Gabriels and other older names now, so the names won't stand out and there will be plenty of fine people with them! Go with the name you like!!
