Thoughts on Milk?

I have heard a lot about the hormones that are fed and given to animals and then we consume. Does anyone have an opinion on organic milk vs. regular whole milk for kids?

Thanks!

I personally try for organic milk and hormone free poultry & eggs...I don't cook a lot of meat...

here's a great resource to look at the different brands of organic milk & how they rate:

We have alot of organic products in our house. My 16 year old seems to think that the milk tastes a little different. My Mother grew up on a farm years ago when everything was organic. I think most people forget that.

Hello K. ,

Unfurtunately everything we consume in this country is enhance by hormones and other chemicals . My older boy now 6 never had a problem with milk (2%)he wasn't much into drinking milk. on the other hand my younger son ( 18 months) developed a bad case of ulticaria ( Hives) to milk a blood test also showed a "small" allergy to milk . He is taking now West Soy Organic Soy milk vanilla flavor , you find it in the organic section @ Publix , It is working for me so far ,he is liking the taste ,so I feel more relive .

Best Wishes ,

Great news! Publix recently declared that all of the Publix-brand milks are from cows that have not been treated with rbST (the artificial hormone that you hear most of the buzz about)!

We've been trying to stick with organic milk for the 5 years since our daughter was born; but sometimes that gets terribly expensive, and at other times the shelves are totally cleared out! Ever since I learned this about Publix, it's been a huge relief. I would imagine, now, that the main difference between this and true organic (for example, the Publix Greenwise organic brand) is that maybe the "organic" milk cows are fed an organic diet? Just guessing.

Organic milk has no added hormones so therefore will have alot less chances of creating poor health affects on your kids, like early puberty and cancers... Publix brand milk has suggested that they do not add the hormones into their milk however itis not considered "organic" becasue the food the cows eat is not all organically grown. In organic milk everything the cows are given to eat, drink, and live are made naturally so there is no risk of conatminations. However since cows milk is harder for humans to digest some people develop stomach aches and inabilies to make bowel movements "properly" but that would happen with any milk not just one or the other. So good luck in your choice! I chose organic for my son but I drink regular 1% I will most likely bring him onto regular milk when he is older, but I am goingt o try to keep him off steroids for as long as possible--lol--C.

Organic is better. You won't have to worry about the chemicals the cow was injected with or fed! Research it through the Google search engine and read up on it. I have to use Rice milk with a vitamin drop every day. My son is now two years old and we have been using rice milk since we were told of his milk and soy allergy. He has other food allergies too. So I have gravitated to Ada's Natural food store for most of his needs. Hope this helped.

We drink organic as well, my son seems to like it better, I dont notice that much of a difference in taste. We like Horizion and the Whole Foods Brand.

FYI - Publix milk does not contain hormones and they clearly label this on all of their cartons. Something to look into? Good luck.

I am soooo glad to hear that so many moms understand the difference between organic and regular milks and everything organic is like that. I try to buy veggies and anything I can organic even thought it is so expensive, but I feel good thinking that I am not feeding a bunch of chemicals and hormones to my family. I have never liked milk, even thought I grow up in a farm and my family raised food and animals the organic way. From the time I was pregnant with my 6 year's old son I have been drinking west soy plus, I liked it and so do my two kids. My son never drank regular milk until he started school and can only drink the chocolate milk, which I don't like but it is only when he is at school. So I recommend you to try the organic one, it probably taste better because it doesn't have all the other additions. Good luck everyone.

Our family stopped all dairy and noticed such a significant difference in our health and vitality...we lost weight, no longer have stuffy noses and feel better. My husband likes rice milk and I drink soy. The soy is creamier and better in coffee! Our 3.5 year old son had only breast milk and then our dr. suggested Almond milk after weaning him and he loved it. (Soy is too difficult to break down for kids) Now that he is older I mix it up for variety rice, soy or almond. He's super healthy and never had any kind of allergies or tummy upsets. It takes some time to switch over if you've been a milk drinker your whole life (I used to drink WHOLE milk and could drink a gallon myself in a day & a half! Yuk! I can't even drink a glass of any cow's milk now as I don't have a taste for it!)

IF you decided that isn't the way to go for your family...I do feel that it is REALLY important to go ORGANIC. The hormones and antibiotic use is really damaging. I hope this helps.

I made the switch a few months ago for our family, based on the research that I did. There are alot of added hormones and other stuff that just isnt good for us or our kids in regular milk. I have only tried the Horizion brand and so far everyone else likes it. I am curious to see how some of the others taste.

I just read somewhere that USFDA is the only label you can trust. All of the other free range, organic, whatever else they had on their brands are not what we think it is. Amazing thing about advertising, eh?

Personally, Organic. It taste better. If not organic, Parmalat. Honestly, milk serves no purpose in our diet...we do not need the mammal milk of other mammals after we are weaned from the only mammal's milk we need...human, as in our mothers. However, many do like the taste...me included. Just the more I read and the more I know the less I think milk does a body good and the more I am starting to agree with those that suggest the absolute opposite. Now, if only I did not like milk so much...

And now for something completely different...

I find milk to be completely unnecesary. We are not a milk drinking family. I keep milk in the house so we can pour some over cereal occasioanlly. As long as your diet includes other foods with calcium, drinking milk is not necessary. Humans are the only other animals who drink beyond weaning, and who drink another animal's milk.
