Thinking About SAHM

Hi ladies!

I have always worked, but since my husband died I have changed positions every year. I am a school teacher and literally 1/2 of my salary goes toward child care. I am thinking about becomming a SAHM until my youngest is in school, but I am feeling overwhelmed with insurance and thoughts on what I might do with my kids if I didin't work. I am looking for specifically sources on insurance for children and maybe some sort of plan? Is there a less stressful way to do this?

What can I do next?

have you ever thought about working from home while being home with your children?
I work from home and always looking to help others do the same. You can request a Free Webcast at my website: www.AhomeCareer.com To see if this might be something for you.

Many Blessings,

A.,
Those of you that do it on your own have my utmost respect and awe! That being said, I must put in my own 2 cents about being a SAHM. I LOVE IT!! OH, there are many days and minutes I feel like I will loose it at any minute since I"m there all the time, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I agree with the post befor me, check with your state to see about the state insurance thing and look into doing a day-care or pre-school. That way you still have your evenings for you and your children. Or, there are many on-line possibilities for SAHMs to do.
I have stayd home for 13 years and wouldn't change a thing. I look forward to working when they are out of the house, but I love being here for them when they come home from school. Good luck and best wishes!

You have my utmost respect and awe too.

I don't have advice on the insurance side of those questions that hasn't already been given but I do about the issue of time that you brought up. I love being a SAHM and strongly recommend going that route too. I remember worrying about my time, my kids' time and my sanity too when I quit work but somehow there is so much to do and so much fun to have with the kids that it seems like a much less trivial thing to worry about (time that is).

Now, having said that, I know dozens of moms who find other smaller jobs at home or where they can take their kids who do that on the side too. There are lots of jobs out there. Anything from teaching lessons or tutoring to cutting out fabric for design stores to daycare at athletic clubs. There are many other things to do to enhance your income and find a suitable social outlet that works for your kids.

The job I left was a teacher. I totally believe you when you say that 1/2 your salary is for child care. That's only half the story. The other half is the time it takes to be a teacher. I don't care how experienced you are it just always takes more time outside of the classroom to prepare than the rest of the world thinks it ought to. Between time and money, is it really worth it? I didn't think so. Best of luck on your decision.

You'd probably qualify for Colorado Health Plus. You can google it online. It'd only be $35 a year for you to cover your kids. Think about 20 years from now, would you regret not working or not staying home. Since you're a teacher I'm sure you'll enjoy your kiddos and can think of fun activities with them.

i am not sure about your income level, but does your state have a health insurance program for children. my state(mt)does. maybe look into that. also maybe look into the company you have insurance through now and see what the cost would be for just your kids if you paid for it yourself. i also thought, since you are a teacher, perhaps you could start a day care in your home. you would make extra money, have kids over to play with your kids and the daycare would provide a flow to your day. you could take preschoolers and run things more like a preschool or you could take younger kids too. I run a daycare in my home so i can answer any questions you might have too. just some thoughts! have a good one!!

A., Your kids should be on Social security benefits, WIC, and Medicaid. Thier health care, dental, some food will be all paid for through these sources. I am sorry to hear about your husband. You sound very positive and can get through it. If you are wanting to work from home selling simply fun games it pays well and you make your own hours. Just a thought!

Hi A.!
Im sorry to hear about your loss. You sound so strong! I just wanted to say that I love being a WAHM. I get to make my schedule around my kids and still make a difference in the world through Health and Nutrition. I am a Personal Wellness Coach and make a pretty good living by supporting others from all over the world in their nutritional programs. If you want to take a look at being a PWC we are always ready to teach others how to do what I do! Heres a website you can look at and let me know if you think its something that might work out for you. www.howyougetstarted.com

As far as the insurance you can go through your state for programs. Here in Utah we have CHIP and wic and medicaid and to help you out. I would contact them. Chip is cool because it gives them great coverage without having to pay premiums and then has really low co pays is all. I didnt know where you are from but your state may have something similar.

Whatever you choose I wish you the very best of luck!

Did you recieve life insurance $? Were you able to pay off your mortgage? Did you know you are eligeable to reieve your husbands social security benifits until each child is 18? That IS NOT WELFARE! Your husband earned that money while working. I can imagine the SS would be more than your teacher salary. If you did recieve life insurance you may have too much in assets to get any government assistance. As far as health insurance you can purchase it from many of the large companies like blue cross or even Kaiser. Are you enjoying your work though? does it energize you? This must be an extremely dfficult time, take care of yourself so you can be a great mom for those kids.
