Thick Hair

I agree with Sherrie G, you need a high quality flat iron to get anything close to the results as a stylist. I have thick, wavy hair cut shoulder length. It takes FOREVER to dry, straighten and style my hair! I'm so glad you asked this question, I'm taking notes on the advice you've received.

This isn't an answer, but a different perspective - and what finally worked for me -

After 45 years of fighting my thick wavy hair I finally gave up fighting with it and bought a styling product for curly hair, and let my hair have its own way. Now I have curly hair and my hubs can't keep his hands off me ;). I got tired of spending tons of $$ and time on products and appliances trying to get it to look as nice as the hairdressers did at the salon. I really thought about how long it took them after they cut & dried it and it was like close to an hour with the flat iron. Who has that kind of time to spend? My arms get tired after 15 minutes with a hair dryer!

Now I wash it, condition it, plunk a handful of gel in it, and let it dry naturally. I look like I spent lots of $ on a spiral perm. And I get compliments! I've never ever gotten compliments on my hair.

I didn't read all the responses but I bought an oil (cuz I have long, wavy frizzy hair). The brand is CHI and it's silk infusing something another. But it helps restore the keratin in your hair. It helps with the frizz also. Now, about the oober fluffy wave, a good flat iron! One that gets hot. I had a great one that did a great job. It finally crapped out on me so I bought a cheapie one. It was such a waste of money! It's a pile of poo! So, there ya go. Good luck!

I have thick, curly hair, cut in a jaw length bob. What kind of flat iron are you using? I know I don't get the same results with my $30 flat iron that my stylist gets with her $200 flat iron. I find that if I flat iron, and don't wash it, just touch it up, on days two and three it is pretty sleek. When it is windy I bobby pin the front back so it is out of my face.

I use serum to smooth my hair and mousse to hold it's shape. If the wind blows, I have to spritz my hair will a little water and scrunch to tame the fluff. If you've straightened your hair with the flatiron, some extra serum brushed through might calm things down. Or my stylist recommends putting a little almond oil on your hands and smoothing it onto your hair.

Haha, don't fight your hair. I have thick hair too and I tried the sleek bob thing a few years ago. It just never looked right! Morroccan oil will take the frizz out and make it look for sleek. Do you use a flat iron? I would say to grow it long, most women look better with longer hair anyway.

I have super thick wavy hair also and this is why I'd never cut it short because I have to wear it in a pony tail for several hours just to calm it down. I have also cut myself bangs and had the same problem. The only answer I can think of is to flat iron it but spray a heat protectant spray first. Flat ironing is the only other way I can get the fluffy out without doing the pony tail.

You might consider calling your stylist and telling him that you're having trouble making it look as good as he did. Some stylists are glad to help with these problems, because stylists get their clients by word of mouth and you'll have lots of good words to say about him when he helps you!

I just fell in love with L'Oreal's EverSleek line. I'm very allergic to dimethicone, which is in every straightening hair product out there. This line has no silicon-based products and is sulfate-free. My thick, unruly hair is finally straightening nicely. I use their shampoo, conditioner and humidity-control product, then a little straightening iron. Really quick and easy now.

I haven't found a solution with wind, though. My hair is mid-length and it's in my face in the wind. I usually try to tuck it behind my ears.

I have super thick wavy hair and it has some major frizz. I also have dark hair. I get complimented on my hair all the time it looks shiny healthy and it's long. I quit highlighting it a few years ago, the color looked nice but it made my dry hair even drier. I will use a semi permanent box dye a few times a year if I want to add a little shine or hint of color. I wash my hair once or twice a week with a good shampoo and intensive conditioning conditioner I let it mostly air dry(it takes most of the day) and then I add heat protective spray and I'll iron it in sections with my chi(cheaper ones won't work). It takes about 45 min but I only do this like once a week and my hair stays straight I might do a quick touch up but otherwise it stays straight and frizz free as long as it doesn't get wet.

I have super thick, extremely curly, frizzy hair. Sounds lovely, right? Well, I get a keratin treatment every few months, and it is amazing! I also flat iron it. Now my hair is long, but I've worn it short, too, and with the keratin treatment, it lays quite nicely. It still has lots of body, but it doesn't have the frizz, and it's not pouffy (totally making up a word here, but you know what I mean). Enjoy your new hairstyle!

I have very thick hair that is about chin length. I use a good conditioner when I wash it (once a week or so I use the Miracle 10 Hair Mask for extra conditioning) and apply CHI silk infusion while it is still damp. Then I dry it with a very large round brush. If it comes out too fluffy or wanting to curl on its own, I use a flat iron (one that has ceramic plates) on a pretty hot setting. The flat iron will take out the extra poof. In the wind or when exercising, there are a few options....My preference is to pull the top portion back into a pony tail of just the top, but a headband also works well.

The other thing that makes a huge difference is water. Do you have hard water in your house? If so, get a shower head that has a water filter on it...it makes a HUGE difference in hair and skin.

I had to buy flat iron spray to tone down my hair. And I have found if I use a more expensive spray, my hair looks even better. And using a serum or mousse like Nancy said would probably be good too.

Get a layered cut where they cut the layers underneath. This takes some of the weight out of the hair, and allows it to sit flatter. Otherwise, you end up with a mushroom head. The hair needs to taper at the end towards your face. Also. Speak with the stylist as to where you should carry the volume in your hair. It makes a difference, and certain places will be more flattering than others.

I have thick wavy hair, and lots of it. I prefer a pixie cut (picture Hallie Berry), or long enough to have in a pony. If I'm going to do an in between length, I make sure there's a lot of layering built in (picture Mrs Brady of the brady bunch).

I don't use an iron, or any styling products. I like the look of windblown locks. I don't even use a hair dryer. When you've got a good thing, why mess with it.

i have super thick wavy hair, if i know i am going out and about and want my hair to look decent, i blow dry it, it helps with the unrulyness a lot if i just let it air dry and then go some where at night i take 20 minutes to flat iron it. flat irons are around 20 bucks for good one the best ones are th 1 inch ones.
