I'm looking for a new thermometer for my almost 1 year old. I would like an ear (or other kind) so that I can take him temp while he is sleeping and quickly.

The one we have now I hate, it was telling me I had a temp of 95 when I was trying to make sure it was reading correctly

Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions... I've ordered the Exergen temporal thermometer. I have one as a back up for his armpit but think the forehead will be the easiest when I'm trying to take it when he is sleeping. I'm hoping I won't have to use it for a long time!

We use a version like the braun electronic ear thermometer and like it. I saw a really expensive one, but maybe this is excessive?

Anyway, the braun ear one works for us.

I'd recommend staying away from an ear thermometer... we were using one and our pediatrician said the results are not at all reliable - which we noticed too, you could take 2 temps minutes apart and it would be drastically different.
They suggested the old fashioned armpit temp, but if you're trying to do it while the child is asleep, the temporal thermometers are the best - our twins were in the NICU for their first 3 months and they used either armpit or forehead. Our sitter has a temporal thermometer too and its very nice.

I have a Exergen Temporal Thermometer. DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! I hate it!
I have also heard ppl recommend it but my experience is-two thumbs down.
It does not glide easily aross the forehead. It gives a different reading everytime. It is completely inaccurate.
Stay away from this product or else you too will toss $40 in the trash. :(

The Exergen temporal thermometer is great - don't know what "Emily" is talking about! It glides very easily on the forehead, and is quite accurate, though not as accurate as rectal readings, which are considered the most accurate. Even my pediatrician uses it. I've used mine for 4 years on both my children with no problems. Have yet to need to change batteries. Wouldn't use anything else.

What I have to suggest is somewhat different. My kids are 11 and 15 now. I rarely used a thermometer. Haven't used one in YEARS. I decided it wasnt' necessary to take their temps at all. You can tell if they have a fever. I decided it didnt' matter what the fever was. If I was going to medicate for the fever, did it really matter if it was 100.8 or 103.4? It didn't. Didn't make a difference in terms of going to the doctor - I'd know if the kid was burning up, lethargic, not taking fluids, etc, the actual amount of the fever didn't matter, so we stopped using thermometers altogether. We're all trained to believe they are an absolute necessity and often no one thinks to question that.

I've heard great things about the Exergen Temporal Thermometer. Hospitals are using versions of them now.
