Testosterone Cream / DHEA

I am in my early 40's and have not hit menopause yet. I have a very low sex drive, but am soooo in love with my husband. I've been seeing a sex therapist to try to address this issue. Yes, having two elementary aged kids affects my mood/energy, as does being a "housewife" and all that goes with that. However, I also did a blood panel and learned that my testosterone levels are very low and I may benefit from a testosterone cream or possibly DHEA as an oral, over-the-counter alternative. Nothing else is out of whack (i.e. thyroid, etc.). I've done research on both testosterone cream and DHEA and was wondering if anyone out there has used either of these medications. Did it help? Did you have side-effects? How long did you use it? Please share anything you can if you've actually used testosterone cream or DHEA. Thank you! I'm eager to enjoy my sex life once again with the love of my life!

What can I do next?

I had the same thing and I was had the testoaterone cream made for me at a compond center. I was on it for about 3 yrs. I did feel more active and my hubby noticed a differance as well. But don't except a change rite away. Just like all other meds it takes time to kick in and start working. But all in all I did like it. Sometimes I would get busy and I did forget to put it on. And I felt sluggish and i put it on and w/in 30 mins I felt more energy. I wasn't on DHEA so I can't help use there.
Hope things work out for you.

Hi S.,

Hope this helps. I am in menopause and have chosen the bio-identical hormone route. If you can think of a menopausal symptom, I have experienced it!
My suggestion is to educate yourself as much as possible. Seek out a phys. who specializes in helping menopausal women and go for it.
My issue wasn't testosterone but progesterone/estrogen imbalance and b/c of stress, I have adrenal and cortisol issues. I am on hormones, adrenal supplement, thyroid med and DHEA.
What I have learned about DHEA is that it helps with other hormones and if they aren't at a certain level then the hormones alone will not work. At the same time, DHEA is only meant to help get the levels up and then get off of it. It is not a long term thing.
Going to the Over the counter method is not safe (in my opinion). I did that and wound up thickening the wall of my uterus. (not a good thing). Your hormones need to be monitored on a regular basis if taking supplements.

There are a group of Dr.s nationwide called BodylogicMD. You may want to check them out.

By the way, if you are in your early 40's then you are in some stage of menopause. It begins long before periods end. It's called peri-menopause.
Usually starts in mid thirties.

There are some interesting things going on with bioidentical creams, BUT it's still an art, not a science. The metabolic pathway of hormones can vary from one woman to the next, so that in some women, added testosterone can get converted to estrogen, thus defeating the intended purpose and adding to cancer risk, etc. So be VERY sure, before you start using testosterone and DHEA, that these compounds won't get diverted to making some other, unwanted hormones instead. Checking your adrenal function with a 24-hour cortisol saliva test is a good place to start.

S., I'm on my way too, just turned 42, so I am reading with interest. The one thing I know about the testosterone cream is that too much is bad. My mom used it for a long time after her breast cancer but sadly the doctor didn't monitor it close enough and it did some permanent damage. It lowered her voice and damaged her singing voice. My mom had a beautiful soprano voice and can no longer sing. That part is heartbreaking.

Anyway, she was happy with the results, loved the creams and the bio-identical hormones and had good success. She just wished they had watched the testosterone levels better so as not to end up with some permanent side effects.

Don't we love this new stage of our lives? :-)

I don't have any knowledge of the products you're asking about, but just want to ask...do you really have a problem or are you trying to live up to this "idea" that we are all supposed to be these highly sexually charged women who take the work world by storm during the day, are super mom to the kids at night and then just animals in the bedroom with our hubbies. Sometimes I think we have this idea that everyone else is having sex daily and we're the only ones doing it just once or twice a week. I bet if you ask around...your drive might not be that low...I'm guessing you have a lot going on. Life isn't all "Sex in the City".

Just saying...

I would start with 2 things....

Bio-Spec's Bio-DHEA, which you can find online. Get the 25mg one, so you can start off with 1 in the am and 1 in the pm and then you can decrease it from there. This stuff rocks. I haven't had the same results with other brands. I've had NO side effects.

The other thing I take in the am with it is Apex Adrenal Support. My local doctor sells it or I've been able to find it online. This supports my endocrine system by supporting the pituitary, so instead of taking testosterone, it allows my body to start making the right amount of each hormone.

I literally felt amazing within 24-24 hours. As far as taking it with other meds, they shouldn't have an issue with it, but it depends on what you are taking. I have friends taking hormones and they've taken the DHEA with it or the Adrenal with it or both and only felt better.

Good luck!

Hi S.,

I'm 41 now with a 21 month old son, i started late. Anyways, the ladies previously had some very good advice. Do your own research and seek out a physician that fits your needs (i saw a holistic internist who specialized in woman's issues.)
after having a saliva test we found Progesterone, cortisol and estrogen hormones levels were out of sync. Cortisol levels were way low so she had me on herbal adrenal gland re-builders and suggested "PHYTO Prolief Natural Balancing Cream from Arbonne International".
after much research on this whole subject i learned about the best levels of each hormone and why its good to be aware of where they're at. I started taking PHYTO-Prolief a few weeks ago and i feel great. I love this stuff. And its natural!
On your concern with testosterone, yes, it's natural that women have testosterone. Its whats helps our energy levels and sex drive. Though it's always wise to keep your hormones monitored, too much doesn't happen that often. Try not to worry yourself too much. Get balanced and get your life back!

All my best,

DHEA was suggested by a friend of my husband by another mail friend. He tried it (down side -- affects your PSA) and I noticed a big change in mood. These days I can tell when he hasn't taken it as his mood becomes negative quickly. I decided to try it as well... (I'm post-menopause and didn't find any negative side effedcs) and find when I forget to take it I feel more depressed than usual.

I'm 47 and I have a 7 year old boy and I work full time and I'm going through perimenopause and all these things have definitely affected my sex drive. The gyn gave me some of those creams but I didn't like how they made me feel - like I had PMS. I go to acupuncture for everything and I haven't had PMS in 15 years so getting it again wasn't fun. My acupuncturist is a medical doctor and she works on fertility issues so I mentioned this problem to her. She said she could help me and she did. I have to go back every 2 or 3 months for a boost but it worked! If you're open to acupuncture I think it works wonders!

Good luck! Hope this helps!
