Hi Moms-I have a 14 month old daughter who has a terrible cough right now-its pretty bad-it wakes her up a few times in the middle of the nite and it got her up early this morning-around 6 AM when she probably would have slept til 8ish-i haven't taken her to the dr because its just a waste of time-they never prescribe her anything to help with the cough and they give me the same old instructions: put a hunidifier in her room. I do that-doesnt seem to help. I don't get this whole big thing about not giving toddlers cough meds-i have an 11 year and a 10 year old and I gave them cough meds at this age and they are just fine-anyone have any suggestions-she is miserable at night-thank you

What can I do next?

Buckwheat honey. I agree with not giving cough meds. Yes, most kids that used to take them are fine. Some aren't. Best of luck.

I have a 3 year ol who has the same thing. The last time she had this she ended up on several meds.

The cough had lasted about a year before her old Dr. ordered a chest X-ray. It showed nothing out of the ordinary. Then she suggested a nedulizer. It did help to some extent, but always came back when we stopped the treatments. Then I took her to an allergist. She said it was asthma and put her singular and more potent ned treatments. I happened to take her to the ENT for my son's appnt and he heard her cough. He was shocked that niether Dr. tried an antibiotic as it sounded like a bacterial infection in her lungs. He prescribed her one and it went away. I very angry those other Dr. did not even think to try antibiotics. She currently has the same cough. Started in her 2 siblings, they are both recovered and she has been coughing for about 2 weeks. The Dr. told us to try Zyrtek and a prescription cough med which I only give at night. It does stop the cough but it returns every day, mostly at night when she lies down. So I think this week we will go back and she will be put on an antibiotic.

Good Luck...I know how frustrating it is!

OH I have also been using Vicks Vapor rub and plug in in her room

I have a 6 yre old who also had a terrible cough and went untreated for a couple of weeks until he began whezzing. Its a long story but the short version is that he has allergy induced asthma which is what causes the terrible cough. From going untreated for so long, he was given an antibiotic to kick out any infection that may have developed during that period. A combo of the breathing treatment and antibiotic helped it go away, but on a bad allergy day, the cough comes back. You may want to have her tested for allergies and keep going back to the dr. until you feel comfortable with her treatment. good luck

Hi sorry you are going through this. My 3 year old had a very bad cough about two weeks ago that turned into croup. We did the humidifier thing but our doc said give her Motrin it helps with the cough somehow and it worked - she was able to sleep at night. We also did honey and warm liquids which helped and the whole steam shower than blast of cool air. Cool night air also helped. But have to say the biggest thing was the motrin it helps. Hope this helps
