So at 8 months everything was great. Napping and eating well. Now, my 9 month old son wakes up every night at around 2 in the morning crying. When I walk into the room and rub his chest or his head just to let him know everything is fine, he stops, like if nothing. The second I am leaving the room he SCREAMS! So I let him cry for a few minutes then walk in again and do the same thing but I never pick him up. Last night it was an hour of crying and screaming. So I am assuming it is separation anxiety, am I right? Also now when he wakes up from a nap he cries, when before he would stay in his crib calmly for a bit babbling to himself. Is it separation anxiety? If so, how long will this last?!?! If not, what else could it be?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks girls! Well it's not an ear infection, my husband is a doctor and he checked his ears. And I don't believe it is teething because right when I walk in the room the crying stops, just by walking in....so my conclusion is separation anxiety. I just wonder how long it will last!!!

I always attriubte sleep pattern changes to growth spurts. He might be hungry! That may help w/him waking up in the middle of sleep.

Whenever my infant acted like that he had ear infections. He never had a fever with it so it took me awhile to figure it out. Poor kid. It hurts them more when they are laying down. Could be teething too. Just a possibility.

I second the teething or ear infections. My son was a decent sleeper till he started getting teeth and ear infections. UGH! I wish for the days before teeth. Often times the only times I knew that he had an ear infection was because he had an awful night. No other symptoms other than his sleep.

It could be the start of more teething. My middle man always slept good. Unless it was teething time. It would take him weeks sometimes to cut teeth too. So alot of times I knew we were in for the long haul with him.

It could be separation anxiety. Kids will go through up and downs with that. Chances are though that if you keep doing what you have been doing he will soon learn mommy is not going anywhere.

The other thing I was thinking is it could be he is getting a cold. This too was another thing that has set my kids off with bad sleeping issues. All three of mine when they are about to get a cold or in the middle of one sleep like crud. Up every other hour just horrible. It will take a day or too though for the nose to start running and cough to show up.

Good luck and know this too shall pass:)

hungry ears or teething. try feeding him giving him tylenol and teething tablets. if that doesn't work for a couple of days then get him checked for an ear infection.
