Terbutaline Kids

Are there any moms on this site that took terbutaline while pregnant? I have heard that it is suspected to be NOT a cause of autism, but a neurotoxin that can sensitize the brain to other toxics and thus leave a child more vulnerable to developmental disorders, some of which may resemble autism. I was treated with it while pregnant and now I'm watching my child like a hawk. So far, so good but he is only 2 months. I'd like to hear what other women's experiences were like, and if this affected your choice to vaccinate or not.

My son is 6 and I had a terbutaline pump while I was pregnant with him from about 25 weeks on. He has autism. He hasn't been vaccinated since he got his autism diagnosis and his younger brother was vaccinated in the begining according to an alternative schedule (google stephanie cave vaccines and you'll find it). My younger one has now had two "minor" vaccine reactions (screamed for 3 days straight after getting the hib - didn't vaccinate him for 2 years after that and he recently got the DTaP had got a bulls-eye rash on his leg and a big knot that took a month to heal). So probably no more vaccines for him. At least not until I recover. LOL And that my be never. I was able to get through my second pregnancy with no terbutaline (I was determine no meds that time aroun) and so far my younger one is developmentally on track. He's 3.

So I can't really offer you any comfort other than to tell you we did really intensive therapy with my older one from 2 on and he's doing really, really well. Good luck to you.

Two things:

Austism may not be totally linked to vaccines, but it does seem to be a toxic overload - whatever that ends up being for each child.

What I have noticed with the babies that come into my office with major digestive issues, I always ask them during the case history, "Did you take terbutaline during your pregnancy?" 90% of the time, the answer is "yes," with a shocked looked. I have not found ANY research regarding this, but that my experience.

So, if the baby already have digestive issues (which is part of the immune system and also an eliminative organ), then vaccinating them may be much easier to cause them to cross that line and end up on the autism spectrum.

I'm stuck on tributaline from the 5th month on. Due to early labor. All my kids are fine, Developed early. All Walking at 9 months old. All smart none of them with ADD or anything else. No Pee during the night problems.

I think people need something to blame but not they're own genetics. God gives us trials that he knows we can handle that's why we all get diffrent ones. Some how we all turn out ok as adults.

People that have babies with other fathers can have completely diffrent pregnancies. And other issues with their kids. I think it's all up to what we are made of and what genes are pulled for each childs DNA.

Hope this helps.

Hello-My name is H.,I have a son who is now 12 years old and was born 1997who was diagnosed autistic when he was in the second grade. While I was pregnent I was given large doses of trubutaline and pracartia from my 25th week until I delivered at 37 weeks.I also have a son who was born 6 years later I refused the treatment of Trubutaline with him because I suspected the use as being in connection to my older sons issuse. I am so glad I refused with my 2nd son because he is 6 now and so far no autistic traits or any other mental/health issuse. My oldest son however I do belive the treatments of Trubulaline and/or pracartia are the resons for his autisim.

I just found your post while searching for any problems with Terbutaline. I was on Terbutaline for 10 weeks in 1997-1998 while pregnant with my 3rd child. She had to do occupational therapy at age 4 upon testing for kindergarten for "holding her pencil incorrectly" so we blew that off as the school expecting a 4 year old to complete something for a 5 year old (according to our OT & another teacher). Then, around age 8, I started noticing speech problems, so she went to speech - that too didn't phase me as she was a finger sucker. She scored high on all standardized tests until about age 13. At age 13, she all the sudden is not able to retain knowledge thru reading comprehension, nor do word problems in math no matter how simple they are, yet is able to do a "regular" math problem. She was referred to a basic skills person in our county after doing poorly on the standardized test. In 8th grade, she now has a teacher who has experience with LD , and this teacher told me she believes my daughter has a problem with "crossing visual midline". My daughter always tells me she cannot focus or see, yet the opthamologist says her eyes are healthy and she sees 20/20. What he did say, as did the teacher, is that there may be a processing problem with getting what she "sees" to her brain - so now we are looking into that, and I wondered if by chance it could have been because of the brethine, as my other 2 children never had any of these problems, nor did my stepdaughter.

I took it with my 2nd baby. I think I was 30 weeks when I started taking it, up until 37 weeks. My son is 2 now and is perfect and healthy and has no problems at all. I have never heard of there being any problems with it before. I wouldn't worry too much. Just enjoy your baby and have fun! They are only so little for so short of a time. I really miss the newborn baby stage

Hi Sandy,
I took Terbutaline while pregnant with my second child (now 11), who shows no symptoms even vaguely similar to autism and did NOT take it with my first child (now 14), who has many behaviors that are similar to those of high functioning children with autism. I vaccinated both of my children according to the standard schedule. My older child began talking very early and his speech had that robotic quality sometimes seen in children with autism well befoe he had the MMR vaccine (Scientific have shown that there is no relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism in spite of the frightening, but not supported scientifically, claims on the web and there are scientific studies that show brain changes from very early in children with autism -- one researcher's name is Courchesne). I watched my eldest like a hawk as well, because I did and do neuropsychological assessments on children and knew what I was seeing (in his language) and the possible developmental trajectory. He (remember, he's the one with whom I did NOT take Terbulatine) still shows some of those behaviors (some self-stimulating "odd" movements of his hands and difficulty with social comprehension) but does not meet criteria for autism, Asperger's or an autism spectrum disorder. On the other hand, he is clearly on that spectrum, just on the high end of what is considered normal. He does have a tic disorder, that is (thankfully) so mild that his teachers are always surprised when I point it out to them. It waxes and wanes.

I'm writing this in so much detail because it is truly human nature to look for causal relationships when we see things occuring together. Especially when facing a diagnosis that can be as devastating to parents as autism, it is important to hear of the many times when two events do NOT occur together (like my Terbutaline and younger child who is popular, socially aware, definitely no signs of autism). I'm sure that, had I taken the Terbutaline in my first pregnancy and not in my second, I would wonder whether the Terbutaline had affected my older son's development.

That being said, watching your child like a hawk (but, I hope, with less anxiety) is pretty typical for new parents and I'm all for it. Almost all childhood difficulties benefit from early intervention and, if you see behaviors that concern you, it's worth talking to professionals (your pediatrician, first) about whether your baby is developing typically. You said that you're not seeing anything that causes you worry now. Enjoy your baby and try not to let the "what ifs" get in the way. By far, the majority of babies grow up fine and yours is likely to be one of those. My Terbutaline baby turned out fine and chances are very good that yours will too! And talking with your baby, interacting, holding and loving is the very best parenting you can do.

Have fun!

I had it (with my newborn also). I wasn't aware of the possible link. My daughter is 2 yr 3 mo. & has had every vaccine on the schedule because they lectured us so much about her vulnerability as a premie. I haven't noticed any problems, but will still keep an eye out also. Isn't autism usually detected after age 2??? I really don't know, so hope you get some better responses!

I took it for 9 weeks while on bed rest due to contracting and having a full placenta previa. My son was born 6 weeks premature due to my placenta, but he is 14 months now and thriving. I never use the corrected age because he is so on track with his other 14 month cousin and friend. We have vaccinated him as recommended by his pediatrician (including MMR 2 months ago)and all is great! Best wishes!!!

I took the drug for the last 3 months daily. My now 5 year old son has been fully vacinated and has no developmental problems. If anything he is more advanced than his older brother was at this stage. Enjoy these beautiful early months with your child, keep regular check ups and IF somehting comes up THEN worry.

Hi Sandy. Yes I also had to be on terbutaline for the last month and a half of my pregnancy. That and bed rest. This was also more than 11 years ago, with my first. The internet back then wasn't very "developed" so if there was-is some suspicion that it may cause this, I wasn't aware of it at the time. So my daughter had all of her vaccines without a problem. She did have a slight speech issue when she was young but I wasn't major and she just sounded like she had a New York accent. But it just went away. My youngest has the same thing and I didn't take it with her, so I'm sure it's a hereditary thing. But everything couldn't have been better. She was a wonderful child and she still is wonderful. Well sometimes since she's turning into a tween! AHHH. But for us, everything went fine and she was even identified as gifted through the LAUSD in the 2nd grade. Keep your head up and I'm sure your little one will be great! You'll make the right choice for you and your family. Good luck!

I didn't take the drug, but I did get two round of vaccines for my son and he had terrible reactions. He had similar symptoms to what John Travolta's son had. Travolta's son died. Lovely. Now all I do is worry. Especially since some of the symptoms came back this week. There are many books on vaccinations. I encourage you to read them. It is your son's life you are talking about and no one else on this earth is more vested or will pay the consequences more for your decisions than you and him. So, make them informed decisions. I praise you for writing in. That means you already are looking. One book is called Tainted Blood or the Sanctity of Blood. I haven't read them, but my friend has. I don't read well, just because it has to apply to me and I have already decided not to vaccinate anymore.

God Bless!

I took trabutaline for several months during my pregnancy. My daughter is now six years old. She was a premie and I had some concerns as well, however she is as smart as a whip and as sociable as they come. She has not had any behavioral problems or any learning or social disabilities at all what so ever. I hope maybe this will help in giving you some reassurance...

Vaccines will attack his nervous system and NOT give him immunity. I don't have a child who is in the same situation nor did i take that drug so i can't comment on it. Only that I have done extensive research and there are too many things that can go wrong and too many dollars that the gov't is sued for each year. If you are at all concerned then that's enough to not... or to at least do some research.
Here are some sources for you:
www.ThinkTwice.com
The Sanctity of Human Blood by Dr. Tim O'Shea
Are Vaccines Really Safe
Vaccination the Silent Killer

There are many sources out there, but if you want the best source I would say look each one up in the PDR which will give you a list of all of the side effects and death is listed for almost all of them and encephalitis (brain damage) and seizures are listed for ALL of them. It will attack the myelin sheaths which are not covered until almost age 18.

I had it for 10 weeks while I was pregnant with my son. I had both the pills and would have to go to the hospital for shots (sometimes two or three shots at a time). My son is now two years old. There are not any signs of autism. He does have a speech delay but this could also be hereditary because both my husband and my family have had siblings and nieces and nephews with speech delay. In every other aspect he is right on track developmentally and in some areas he is a little ahead.

I can only speak from my experience. I was on terbutaline every 4 hours for 10 weeks when I went into early labor with my twins. They were born healthy at 35 weeks. Now 9 years old they are both doing extremely well with no signs of developmental disorders. I may have just been lucky. They are happy, intellegent social kids. E. (Mom of 4)

When I was preggo with my now 2.5 year old daughter I was on Terbutaline from 26 weeks through 35 weeks. From 32 weeks until delivery at 35 weeks they had me on all kinds of drugs to help prevent contractions. She was born at 35 weeks and 2 days totally healthy at just under 6lbs. The only issue she had was jaundice.

I have a 4.5 yo son who can barely sit still, who is not "book smart" kid, but is definitely "street smart" and intelligent and very sociable.

My daughter will be the book smart one out of the two. She enjoys reading and learning new things. She is very articulate even though she actually starting talking later than my son. He started talking just before he turned 1....mumbling simple words from about 6 months. She started really talking at about 15 months. But now at 2.5 her vocabulary and actual understanding of what she says and does is way beyond where my son was at the same age. Different kids have different personalities and do better in certain areas of life than others.

Both my kids were vaccinated on schedule. Thankfully our ped spaces out the shots. We usually do 2 shots max at a time.

My daughter also has some food allergies, but I attribute that more to family history than to anything else. I have my own food allergies, DH has 1 food allergy, my Dad had Asthma, and my MIL had eczema. So allergies do run in our family.

I am really on the fence with vaccinating. I don't really like to do them. But I do understand the pro's and con's. My main reasons for vaccinating are:

1- with so many kids these days not being vaccinated, the chances of weird diseases that have mostly been eliminated reappearing are greater.
2- if we as a family decide to travel to foreign countries, I want my children's bodies armed with the right defenses against any strange diseases.

But I would do more research on each individual immunization before you make your decision. You may find that you will allow certain immunizations, but not others based on your studies.

Congrats on being a New Mommy! Enjoy your little guy and try not to worry about all the "What If's".

10 years ago, I went into pre-term labor with my daughter at 21 1/2 weeks. They gave me terbutaline and monitored me until the contractions stopped. I was put on partial bedrest. My baby girl is 10 and has had no problems whatsoever. She is actually a GATE student with a very social personality. I was not given it beyond the one time, but it never affected her. She has also had all vaccinations during the regularly scheduled visits to her dr.

Both of my oldest son's were "turbutaline" babies. My oldest is an honor student who will be graduating next June, his brother will graduate next year, they both play sports and are very social. I haven't heard the information you received and I'm really sorry that you are so concerned.

My oldest daughter who was not a turbutaline baby has been diagnosed with Asberger's syndrome and Absence seizures this was not diagnosed until 2 years ago. She'll be 8 in October. I knew from the time she was 3 1/2 that something wasn't right and started trying to figure things out, it wasn't until she started going to school that we were able to get real ideas of what was happening.

All of my children have been vaccinated. I would follow the Dr. Sears recommendations for vaccination schedule. There is a lot of fear based information out there, some has basis in fact most of it is anecdotal without any basis in science. There are many different causes for many illnesses, disorders and developmental issues. At this point I would just relax, enjoy your baby and learn to listen to your mother's intuition. There is so much information out there and you can freak yourself out following and fearing all of it. As a mother if you will spend time with your baby you will know if things aren't right.

Your baby is only 2 months old and he's your first. If you will love him, cuddle him, pay attention to him and take him for regular check ups you'll know if there is anything wrong. A mother's instinct is very strong.

I took turbutalene for almost two weeks until I realized that I was insane for taking such a harsh drug to prevent preterm labor. It made me feel so horrible and like I was going to die of a heart attack. How can that be at any way not harmful to an unborn child? Now, he is suffering from speech delay and gross motor skill problems. He cannot jump and loses his balance easily. I'm going to sue the hospital. I had him at home but was in the hospital due to falling going up the stairs. I had some contractions so they injected me a couple of times with that horrible poison. I do feel abused by our toxic system and guilt that I succumbed to fear when I could have just had a glass of red wine to calm the contractions like women have done throughout time as well as calming herbs just for situations like this. The medical establishment is nothing more than macabre and brutal. I'm over it. Time to believe in yourself and mother nature.

Wow! I have never heard of this. I was given this drug during --well at the end of my pregnancy with my twins. My water broke at 28 weeks and this is what they gave me first. When they discovered I was still contracting they gave me mag. sulfate. I delivered 2 days after my water broke at 28 weeks 4 days. My boys were in the NICU for 2 months. I have to say there are no lasting effects from the premature birth and I had no idea terbutaline could be a problem. They are however very sensitive to sound, but so am I. They are 4 years old and quite smart. My second pregnancy I began contracting at 33 weeks and was given 2 doses of turbutaline which stopped everything, he was 2 weeks overdue! This son is NOT sensitive to sounds, he is 2. Talked very early--for a boy. Walked early etc. Being that I have all boys, twins too I did worry about autism. And little bells did go off when we saw some of the stuff they did like organize things (food, blocks, cars) and stack things (again food etc.) But so far, so good. I pretty much think my 2 year old is out of the woods. As far as vaccinating, I chose not to. But not because of terbutaline. Thanks for posting this, I am very interested to start the research on this. There will be a website coming soon called 2andtalking.com (or twoandtalking) by a doctor among others. It isn't up yet, but should be soon. Should be interesting to hear their perspective on waiting to vaccinate or not vaccinating at all.
