Temper Tantrums - Hinsdale, IL

My nearly 10 month old daughter has started to throw temper tantrums when she does not get what she wants. She stiffens her whole body, archs her back and screams. It takes some time before we can divert her attention and calm her down. Sometimes we don't even know what it is that she wants since she cannot really communicate with us yet. Is this normal at this age? I didn't think that this started until the terrible two's! Any advise on if this is normal and how to handle this would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I'm afraid I won't be any help - my 11 month old son does the same thing - I'm looking for some advice as well!

My little monkey does that too. They say terrible two's actually start at terrible one's!

They are so easily distractable at this age, so I distract her with something else when she throws a fit. Even imitating her whining and crying she immediately forgets and starts laughing at me!

Other times when she is throwing a tantrum for a trivial reason, I walk away and keep an eye on her from the next room. I make sure she is on the carpet and away from harms way. She immediately calms down because there is no 'audience' anymore. It works really well at least for her.

Another suggestion is to try to start teaching her baby sign language. It helps them communicate and thus they get less frustrated. Gymboree offers baby sign classes but u can easily learn them online if you Google it.

YES! IT'S NORMAL. GIRLS ARE FUN, AREN'T THEY? MY DAUGHTER IS 19 MOS OLD AND STARTED WITH THE TEMPER TANTRUMS AROUND 10 MOS ALSO. THEY SHOULD RENAME THE TERRIBLE TWOS BECAUSE I'M CONVINCED THAT IT STARTS MUCH EARLIER! WHEN MY DAUGHTER DOES THIS, THE ONLY THING THAT REALLY WORKS IS TO IGNORE HER! IF SHE SEES THAT I'M NOT REACTING TO HER TANTRUM OR TO SOMETHING SHE KNOWS SHE'S NOT SUPPOSED TO DO, SHE'LL STOP. THE MORE OF A REACTION THEY GET OUT OF YOU, THE WORSE IT GETS. GOOD LUCK!

it happened with my son at that age (he's now 16 months) and it's just a phase. don't get me wrong, it still happens but he's much easier to distract and calm down now. all i would do is take him away from whatever it was he was trying to do and sit down and read some books (which he loves).

My daughter will be 2 next month and the only way to deal with it is DONT. When she started doing this we laid her down on the floor where she couldnt hurt herself and walked away from her. If you give them attention when they are throwing fits then they will use that to get there way as they grow up, if you ignore her she will see that throwing a fit does no go for her and she will stop. So when she starts put her on the floor and walk away, when she has calmed down then you can go and ask her what she wants. We did this with my daughter and she doesn't do that anymore. Good Luck!
