Teething Toddler in Pain! :(

My 19 month old son is getting all 4 of his canine teeth at once. His poor mouth is so sore! He hasn't been sleeping well, and I have been giving him teething tablets and Tylenol. He has been chewing on his hands non-stop, and they are getting chapped and red. I have tried giving him frozen things to chew on (Gogurt, froz. blueberries, froz. toaster waffles), but I am out of ideas. What else can I give him to help him feel better and to help keep his hands out of his mouth? He has too many other teeth and is too big for traditional teethers (those water filled ones would pop). Thanks for any suggestions!!!

What can I do next?

Have you tried the teething gel and rubbed it on his gums? My daughter is 14 months and she is getting some molars in. I am sorry and I feel your pain... I have also given her motrin because is releives the pain longer. She also likes a tooth brush to chew on. I hope something gives him releive. This is such a hard time for them!

Good Luck!

I know this may sound weird but have you tried beef jerky? Get the kind that comes in the can that is a little tougher (so he won't chew through it). As long as you don't mind you baby smelling like meat he should enjoy it!

Beef jerky is a great one I forgot about that until I read it I only had one who was a bad teether and he loved the jerky and it made his mouth feel good.

Our 20 month old is in the same boat. He has recently started carrying around his vibrating teether a lot. He seems happier with it. Also, Nuby and some others make a pre-toothbrush that is just nubby. He loves chewing on that. Either way, the drool is horrible, but he's happy. As for sleeping more, I'd go with the Motrin. If you're up late enough, you might give him that at bedtime, or close, and then 3 hours later give him Tylenol so it lasts longer. Hope you get some sleep tonight!

I have to agree with the other post regarding trying Motrin instead of Tylenol (6-8 hours versus 4-6), and I would also try teething gel. It's topical and you just rub it onto his sore areas. For my daughter, this allows her to sleep better at night, and also allows her to try to eat a meal (she's working on her 2 year molars).

As far as the chewing on his fingers, it's soothing for him. If you put Aquaphor on his face around his mouth (after a bath at night time) it may help with chapped skin from all the drooling.

It's a tough time, but it will subside. Hang in there - both of you! Give it a try. If you're still not sure about what to do, always consult your pediatrician. They usually have good ideas.
