Teething Tablets, and Teething in General.

Hello mommas! I posted earlier about my 2 1/2 month old daughter and how I thought she was teething... The general consensus is that it sounds like she is, and I really think so. A lot of people have recommended teething tablets... I haven't had a chance to go to the store and look at them, so I was just wondering~ what is it that they do exactly? are they a pain medicine, numbing stuff, what? and are they OK for a baby so young? Also, if it turns out that she ISNT teething, are they still ok to have given to her? Are these questions I should be asking my pedi, or is this gentle enough you don't need to OK it? Plus, any other general info on them, or how to soothe a teething baby. I haven't been able to get the poor girl to sleep for more than an hour at a time, so any advice would be great. :)

What can I do next?

Hyland's are the best and not harmful! When my teething DD was 1, she found a bottle, bit the lid off and ate half the bottle. I freaked out and called the poison control center. They said not to worry about it. She was fine. She's not too young to have them and they are the BEST!!! Don't give her oragel yet. She needs to be 4 months old for that.

Hi Christina,
I didn't see your other question, but if she is teething, the Hyland's Brand Teething tablets are great. Or, you can just use the homeopathic chammomile tablets. Both are homeopathic, perfectly safe, and wonderful! They will become your best friends. You just rub them on her tongue (older children place them under the tongue, but it's hard with such little ones to do that), and they dissolve instantly. You can't OD on them, and they are very, very safe. If you get chammomile, get the 30x (that's the strength). And, I recommend Hyland's for this age as they do dissolve so much quicker. The Boiron are hard little balls that take a lot longer to dissolve. They do sell it in liquid form, but I never found that to be useful for some reason. Even if she isn't teething, the homeopathy will help her to be calmer and more at peace. Most docs don't know about homeopathy, so I wouldn't bother asking about it. Even if she ate the whole bottle, she'd be fine, they are that safe. I would give her 2 at a time. For the first hour, give them every 15 minutes until she seems to be better. Then, you can space it out more. Eventually, you only need to do it once every 4 hours or so. Or, as needed, whichever you think works best for her. Feel free to email me privately if you have more questions.

No, they aren't medicine, they are homeopathic. They are actually safer than things like Orajel which can affect the baby's throat because parents usually use too much:( Look at the ingredients, it's stuff like chamomile.

Another thing you can try is a baltic amber necklace or bracelet/anklet. You can google it and find lots of info about them. They release minerals into the skin that are a natural analgesic - also good for arthritis pain if you have a grandparent who suffers! The newest thing is allspice necklaces/bracelets/anklets. They work by releasing something that tightens the gums so it's easier for the teeth to cut through.

Teething tablets are great. Just hold it under her tongue and they dissolve almost instantly. Then just rub it around on her gums. It is a numbing medicine and therefore relieves the pain. My son calms down almost immediately. Also, ibuprofin is always better for teething pain than Tylenol. They are completely harmless, I give my son three or four at a time along with Motrin/ibuprofin. Good luck!

if you go with numbing gel, try it on yourself first so you can feel how well it works--it only takes a tiny tiny dot!

I think you can crush or dissolve the Hyland's tablets since she is so young. They make a "Calms Forte" one and a "teething" one and either calmed my lil' one down, but mine were older (16 mo) when I tried it--mostly I think it was a distraction and she thought it was a treat.

My only warning is to make sure you check the ingredients! I looked at them once when my 2 yr old was a bit younger and I saw they had CAFFEINE in them. I absolutely refused to by something with caffeine for my child!

I used Hyland's and I loved them. They seemed to calm her down, and they dissolve quickly (I tried them before I gave my baby one). A friend of ours said try only one, but on the bottle I believe it said you can give a baby up to 3 at a time multiple times a day. Maybe try one and watch for any reactions. Other then that frozen wash cloths, frozen waffles or get those mesh pacifier things and put some ice in it, for her to gnaw on (I would wait on the waffles, but when she gets a little older they are great for teething)! Good Luck. =)

they are a mixture of homeopathic elements that soothe the pain, crankiness and general upset that come with teething.

scientifically i cant tell how they work, but they are neither narcotic, or numbing.

Just a comment on the one who said to crush them and give them to her.

Hylands Teething Tablets dissolve pretty much instantly when you put them in their mouth. (Supposed to try to get under the tongue.) But they dissolve so fast I was not always able to get it under our kids' tongues.

They won't hurt her. I would only give her one and see if it helps.

Also, take her to the chiropractor. Find one that takes special training in infants. Whenever our kids would have rough nights, I'd take them in for an adjustment (very gentle!) and I would notice a difference RIGHT AWAY! They would sleep so good again!

We tried everything for my DD when she was teething (teething tablets, Orajel, frozen washcloths, teething rings, teething bags with frozen fruit, Tylenol). The only thing that ever worked for her was ibuprofen. When I told my pedi, he said that tons of mothers say the same thing. Just make sure you check with your pedi on the dosage - and make sure you use generic ibuprofen since a batch of Motrin was recently recalled. In general, I would check with the pedi about anything you give your daughter. I always try to go natural first - teething tablets, gripe water, etc. My pedi is really good about saying "there's no medical support for it, but many moms say it works" - that's good advice.

A couple of notes: Be careful with the Orajel. It is a numbing agent and very difficult to get on target. If they swallow it, it can numb their throat and make them have difficulty swallowing. And I have mixed feelings about Hylands teething tablets. They have have belladonna in them which is a well known poison. It's in very small amounts based on homeopathic principles, but I'm not sure I agree with homeopathy. I did go ahead and give it to my daughter since so many moms say it's great, but it did nothing for her. Lastly, frozen waffles are GREAT once your daughter is older (pickles, too). Good luck!
