Teething Problem ...or Not?

I have a 7 months old daughter, Emma. She got her first 2 teeth last month. We used Tylenol and the numbing gel and everything worked grate. The problem is that, now, every time she's cranky we think that it might be others teeth that are ready to get out and we jump to Tylenol or the gel. What if are not the teeth and we are just "doping " her with meds. She never cries without a good reason like being really hungry or tired. Sleeps well through the night form 9pm to 6-7 am plus two naps of 2-3 hrs/day. So,really when she's cranky something's going on. I know all the signs of teething but she's drooling non stop since she was 3 months, no inflammation of the gums....

What can I do next?

When my children were cranky and teething, I had great success with Chamomila which is a homeopathic remedy. You can pick it up at Seattle Super Supplements - but it ONLY works if they are in pain and cranky. If there is nothing going on at all, it is not harmful, as tylenol can be.

Look for "teething tablets". They are all-natural and work better than anything out there. I found them at Walmart. Just ask your local pharmacist.

Hello- I have a small suggession about your teething problem with your little one. I would say that she is probably getting more teeth in if she is normally a good baby, which she seems to be. You might think about using teething tablets instead of the numbing gel. The tablets are very small and disolve istantly in her mouth. They also seem to last about 5-6 hours, and you give her anywhere from 2-4 tablets at a time depending on how her teething problem is. These teething tablets are found at any parmacey, and are all natural tablets, and they run about 4to 5 dollars a bottle. I swear by them, and you don't feel like your drugging your child with a bunch of medication. I hope I helped you situation a bit, and good luck with all the other teeth coming soon

I used to worry about the same thing. I just rarely would give my kids meds during the day but if the pain was making it hard to sleep then I would give it to them and I found that they would sleep well after I gave them the pain meds so it must have been teething but during the day I found that it didn't work as well just cause babies always have something wrong with them in my opinion and its hard to determine if its really teeth or not. My son drooled from the time he was 3 months until he was 11 months before he actually got his first tooth lol. Just use your judgement and if she is really miserable then give it to her but otherwise I would try to distract her.

I clicked to respond but see you already have been given the best advice... Hyland's Teething Tablets! All natural and they work immediately. I bought mine at Target and found them to be the cheapest around. But now they have them inside the pharmacy so you have to ask for them and be there when it's open.

My son learned to ask for them when he was teething. That's how I really know they worked! We used sign language and taught him the sign for medicine, which he would do and then point to his teeth and he'd get excited when I got out the Hyland's bottle. He knew he was communicating with me! He got his first teeth around 9 mos, so I'm talking about signing like this closer to a year old. He started signing at 6 mos.

I would only give Tylenol if he had a fever, to bring it down. Otherwise you don't know if you are doping them up. Please try the teething tablets! They are cheap, $3.39 at Target for a whole bottle of 125 tablets. (They are small.) And you only need 2-3 each time so it lasts a while. I'd give 4 or maybe 5 when the molars come in. A friend used 6 when the 2yr molars were coming in. But it doesn't hurt them to have a little more, it's not a drug. Mostly chamomile and other natural ingredients that soothe and numb the gums. I buy them for friends who are having first babies, I put a bottle in with their shower gifts! This is one of those secrets of motherhood you just want to share with everyone!

I just wanted to add something. Our Pediatrician told us to not use the teething gels because if they swallow enough of it, it can numb their gag reflex.

You should massage her gums with your finger every time you think it's teething and you will be able to feel the teeth and then you can give her Tyenol/numbing gel. Be careful she may try to bite because of the pain if it teething.

I have the same problem. The only way I can truly tell if they're teething is seeing the little white bumps of the teeth coming in. :( Have you tried those Hyland's teething tablets? They work really well for me! Since they're all natural, I don't feel bad for giving them "just in case".

two words: Teething Tablets
These are made by Hylands and you can get them at just about any store (Fred Meyer, Albertsons, Wal-mart, etc)in the baby isle. They are homeopathic so they are natural and you can give as little as 1 tab, which totally dissolve within seconds or as much as 4 (or more!), depending on their "reaction" (Like it was stated before, giving the 1/2 dose of tylenol.) This is the same concept, but without waiting for the dosage to work and then administering more meds. The effect is immediate and if it worked than you can give more. In my 12 years of parenting experience I have never given tylenol for teething, ONLY Hylands Teething Tablets! In my daycare experience (18 years) I have given tylenol and haven't seen any better benefits.
Hope this helps!

I never used the gel either. Usually you'll know that it's teething mostly not only because of the drool but because she will be chewing on everything. So if you are concerned about medicating her, you could try the teething tablets they worked great for my daughter or you could try letting her chew on a cold raw carrot or frozen waffle or popsicle. The cold things help their mouths feel better.
Best advice I can give you is to trust yourself. You know your baby best and what her cries mean. My daughter never had the gum inflammation. With her she chewed on her toys and her fist a lot and then the next thing you know there was a tooth poking through the gum.Good luck.

Well I am sure you have already heard this but instead of meds there are these all natural teething tablets. You just give your daughter 3 -4 tablets and they instantly melt in her mouth. They are safe and seem to work well. Whenever my daughter was teething I wanted the same thing not to keep drugging her up. Also if you have ever heard of meesh teethers they work well also. You can freeze fruit like bananas, apples etc. and let her chew on it safely without worrying about her swallowing anything. Good luck

It is always hard to tell when they are really actually teething. One thing I did with my son and what I do with all of my daycare kids is that I will give half the regular dose of tylenol. If it helps them, its obvious it was needed. If I don't see a change in their fussiness, I try a few other things. I never used the numbing gel. I chose teething tablets (in the baby section at target, walgreens etc). They are a natural remedy and work wonders. Best of luck with your little teether!
