Teething Mania

My 13 month old has been teething for most of the summer and I have noticed a rather bizarre pattern when she tries to fall asleep. She doesn't cry but will yell, kick, giggle insanely, bite, roll around the bed, run around the house, or chatter nonstop... basically behave in a very hyper, overtsimulated fashion. She has great difficulty settling herself down. She can't even nurse to sleep which is usually a guaranteed success. Once the teeth fully cut through the behavior ends and she goes to sleep just fine. Unfortunately, this behavior has been happening on and off for weeks because the most recent pair of teeth are taking FOREVER to cut through all the way. Has anyone else had this problem? She sleeps fine once she falls asleep but it can take two or more hours for her to get there and this totally disrupts her routine. We medicate (Tylenol or Motrin) on nights when she is really in distress (i.e., pulling her hair ) but I don't want to do this every night. Any help would be appreciated because we still have many more teeth to go! Thanks!

What can I do next?

My son can get that way when he is overtired. Looks like a second wind, but.... Perhaps she is not sleeping so soundly because of discomfort and is therefore overtired? Just a thought.

Try Teething Tablets, you can buy them at any vitamin shop. They are completely natural, and my son could not live without them while he was teething (or at least I couldn't)!

I highly recommen Hyland's Teething Tablets. they work great on my 14 month old. She has been fighting with her molars for 2 months now. Another thing that a friend of mine, who happens to be a dentist, told e is to give her beneryl. he said that the pain of teething is similar to the pain of a paper cut. along with the pain comes an intense itch. The beedryl relieves the itching and it also helps them fall asleep. I am not one to medicate my children for no reason, but the few times we have tried it it has worked. It is also a reliefe to me to see my little one be able to sleep comfortably. I have had many nights where she acts that same as your daughter and my heart just breaks for her. Give it a try. good Luck.

As for the tylenol, if you need, try just rubbing liquid tylenol on the gums, rather than giving a full dose if you need. It numbs is comfortably (not stinging like Ambosal).

When my son was that age, he also had a lot of discomfort when cutting teeth, and none of the oral medications for pain seemed to help very much. I finally started rubbing a bit of Baby Oragel on his gums when I got him ready for bed, which would sooth the pain enough for him to get to sleep.

Try a product called Gentle Naturals Homeopathic Teething Drops. I found it at Target in the baby section, or you can find it online. it is fabulous and very safe, it is essentially chamomile. i had twins that were both nightmares with teething and i didn't want to give them tylenol every day for months and this stuff saved my life! try it, it takes the edge off the pain.

I totally feel your pain. I have 11 month old twins and my one son is a nightmare!!! He has refused a bottle for 7 days now. I brought him to the doctor because I am so concerned and wanted to rule out anything else. He checked out fine and I was told teething. I can't take it. He is so not himself. Crying all the time, wants only me. My only savior is that he sleeps well and even more than normal. Howver, I am so concerned because he still needs his formula. They were preemies and are only in the 10th percentile for weight. Does your daughter still take a bottle and eat her food with the teething?

Have you tried the homeopathic teething tablets yet? They work wonders for my son. You can get them at any pharmacy in the baby section. The tablets calm the gums down and relax the baby. We love them. Hope that helps!

I swore by Hyland's Teething Tablets, found in any health food store that carries homeopathic products, as well as many drugstores in the baby section--NOT by the infant medication. They have several ingredients to help with irritability, pain, and to promote the teething process itself. They are these little sugar-like tablets that dissolve insantly in her mouth. Good luck!
