Teething, Diarrhea, Vomiting

My 9month old is cutting his two top teeth. The bottoms weren't too bad. But these...WOW. For nearly a week he has had diarrhea (4-12 times a day!), he has been vomiting, and didn't sleep for 4 nights. The Dr. confirmed that he thinks it is due to his teeth, as he has no other symptoms of being sick (i.e. besides bed time he is really not very fussy, only very mild fever, etc). I'm at my wits end with the diarrhea though. We have to change his bed sheets 3 - 4 times a day! Any advise? I'm trying another 24 hours of nothing but pedialyte and toast and will try almost anything else!!!

What can I do next?

For the diarrhea - you can also try Culturelle (for children or adults if you can't find it for children). You buy it over the counter. I forget what it is called, but it has the same stuff that is in yogurt (active live cultures? - good for your intestines). Just put the powder from the pill in his drink. It will bulk up his stool and help lessen the frequency of the diarrhea. I have used this with the recommendation of my pediatrician with all three of my children during stomach viruses. It helps. Hope he's better soon :).

My 14 month old is going thru the same thing - second top tooth coming in with tons of diarrhea. I wondered about the stomach bug myself, but she seems fine otherwise. My only advice is on the bedsheets because I'm stumped on stopping the diarrhea myself - it isn't easy to get two sets of sheets on a crib but you will save yourself some hassle if you put one bottom sheet on, then a waterproof matress pad, then another sheet. At least then you can pull off the dirty one and be ready to go again w/o having to completely remake the bed. We've been doing that since she was born and I've never had to do a complete remake of the bed in the middle of the night! Good luck!

Hi S.,
I think your son has a stomach virus in addition to his cutting teeth. That amount of diarrhea and it going on for a week is a little too much and little too long to contribute it to the teething. Maybe when you went to see your Pediatrician it hadn't been going on for as long or had just started and that is why he thought they might be related.

As for the diarrhea, you need to try to get something in him besides just liquids. Liquids in = liquids out. Pedialyte is excellent for keeping him hydrated and if he is taking that well, keep offering it but try to also offer other foods like the BRATY diet. B=bananas, R=rice cereal, A=applesauce, T=toast and Y=Yogurt. Look for yogurt w/ Live Active Cultures. Also, if he is taking a bottle, try switching him to Isomil DF (soy based formula DF = diarrhea formula). Babies will sometimes become intolerant to regular formula with diarrhea and so giving the soy based formula for 5-7 days sometimes helps. If your son is still having a lot of vomiting, I would recommend you get him re-evaluated b/c then it is harder to offer solids as they will keep coming back up. The main thing is to keep him hydrated, so please continue the pedialyte but again try to get him to take the formula or BRATY diet also.
I hope he gets better soon!

I don't know what is causing it, but I can tell you that my pediatrician would NEVER blame diarrhea and vomiting on teething! 12 times a day is serious! Get another opinion from a different pediatrician!

Hi S.,

I've never heard of teething causing so much diarrhea and vomiting! He sounds like he's got a virus that will take some time to pass but teething should only cause some fussiness, not illness.
It's painful for them to teeth but I wouldn't say to the point it makes them sick.
I would get him back to the doctor or get a second opinion from another doctor.
I'm not sure how much you like your pedi but it sounds to me like he/she is blaming your childs illness on teething to avoid having to do further testing.

Good luck and hope he gets better soon!
