Hello Moms!
My 7 month old baby girl is teething and will not take a pacifier. My older girls, now 3 and 22 months both took binkys and although some nights of teething were horrible, the binky was a great soother for them. I am looking for suggestions for my beautiful smiling baby girl to help her through teething without a binky. She currently hugs and sucks on a mini blanket which seems to help, we give her Hyland tabs, Tylenol, and Orajel swabs...all seem to help and things are better, but any suggestions are welcome :)

So What Happened?

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you for your great advice!! She is doing well with the Hyland tabs, Orajel swabs, and Tylenol, and she is loving her tiny blankies!! I cut a regular size cotton thermal swaddle blanket in to 4 and they are the perfect size for her to snuggle and munch on :) Now, I have another question and will post soon...thanks again!

For teething, I used Clove Oil...natural and easy. I went to Whole Foods market and they had great stuff and fantastic suggestions for natural relief. It soothes the swelling and eases the pain.

My son kicked his binky early, and so I stuck with simple easy and natural remedies. Also, I used Motrin since it helps with the swelling and you don't have to does as often.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're doing everything you need to do to keep your baby comfy! Good work!

Sounds funny but my kids loved Kosher dill pickles when they were teething. I would get the whole pickles, snip off the end and they seemed to really help. The cold and being able to bite on something that tasted yummy did the trick when they were having a really fussy painful teething day. Silly but worked for us. :) Good Luck!

When it got really bad I would give them a popsicle and they also forget about the pain.

My sister recommended frozen bagels cut in half then in fours. It worked great for my son. there was really no pieces to clean up and really no reason for choking though I always recommend watching them. my son through out his pacifier @ about the same time too. so hopefully this will work when it's time to wash the blankie.

Get some teether crackers/biscuits at Henry's and freeze them. The cold helps their gums and the hard biscuit/cracker gives them something to gnaw on.

Hi S., The fact that your baby won't take the pacifire, is a good thing in my opinion. There are things you can do to ease the discomfort of teething. Hers the 3 things I did with my teether's when they were little
1. I would rub the infants tylenol directly on the gums, it
numed better that the oragel back in the 80's
2. I kept a spoon in the freezer, and massaged their gums
3. I wrapped crush ice in a wash cloth and put rubberband
around it and let them gum it (that was their favorite)
and at night I would put a bottle or cup in the corner on the crib with cold water to cool the gums, in case they wake up in discomfort, all this worked for my 3, now grown baby's/toddlers. J. L.

pacifier in the freezer worked like a charm. Fill it with water if you can and then freeze it.
Also, try chamomile tea on a rag in the freezer.
Also try the orajel on a q-tip, pea sized amount. It turns off the crying and the discomfort almost immediatley.

These things are saving our life right now.
Good Luck.

With my oldest son, I would put the pacifier in the fridge so it'd be cool and sooth his gums.
Hope that helps

I would steam and puree fruits, freeze them and then cut into small bits for her to chew and eat frozen. She also loved ice bits. (I also purchased those net-like food holders. They have ring for her to hold. They're for whole ice cubes and whole fruits, which allow her to nibble and munch and gum the ice or fruit without choking- but she didn't care for them.)

Moisten a small hand or wash towel and freeze tehn allow baby to chew on it.

Frozen teething toys worked for my son and teething drops are amazing! Also, try a frozen wash cloth. It's a bit messy but good. The nighttime oragel is what I used for my son about 10 minutes before bedtime. It allowed him to relax so that he could fall asleep. Also, try putting crushed ice or froxen bananas or apples in a food net. Also messy but wonderful. My son is 18 months old and and has 15 teeth. He currently has an affection for spoons and his toothbrush. Oh the joy! :)

S.,

In my experience ibuprophen/Motrin works way better for teething pain and last longer (6-8 hours as opposed to 3-4).

The Hylands teething tablets made everything worse for my son. He's dairy intolerant and they have a "milk sugar base." So he had teething and a tummy ache! They make a hyland's teething gel. If you can find it, it works pretty well.

Good luck, teething sucks!

I would stick with Hylands, I have heard that Oragel toughens the gums making it harder for them to come out. Try taking the corner of a washcloth, wetting it with drinking water, and freeze it. Let her chew on that. We had a vibrating teething ring our daughter really liked as well. Good luck mama, teething sucks!

Hi S.!
I gave my daughter frozen waffles.....they are perfect to hold, the texture helps break the tooth thru...and if she eats them (which she will probably enjoy), not a big deal. Just watch her of course. Good luck! T.

Actually I have read that it is better to let the child find ways to self-soothe such a thumb-sucking as opposed to the binky. The thumb is something they can do for themselves, promoting self care, whereas the binky use gives a message that others will solve their problems - self sufficiency being the favored outcome. One thing my daughters all used to like was a damp facecloth (that is kept in a baggie in the frig) to gum on..it's coolness seems to soothe. The teething rings kept in the freezer can actually damage skin tissue..cool but not frozen is better! Good luck

I used to wet baby wash clothes, put them in freezer bags and put them in the freezer. When my daughter's incoming teeth would hurt, I would pull one out, rinse in cool water, wring it out and she would chew on it for hours. Good luck

My oldest cut two teeth at a time, I never gave him a pacifier. However, I did massage his gums while putting pressure on the gums at the same time and it helped with orgel, adult strength. I also used a finger dipped in whisky (black velvet) to numb the gums this was told to me by my mother in law at the time. She said it would work and it did. I don't advocate to the use of alcohol, but this worked for me. Good Luck.

Please, PLEASE do not give your baby Tylenol. It contains Acetaminophen. This ingredient is the highest cause of liver faiulre more than any other drug. I'm on Cumadin or Warfarin (a blood thinner) Tylenol is, or was the ONLY pain meidcine I was allowed to take, until I bought Mark Hyman's "The Detox Box" He has some other excellent publications too (all about good health). I listened to the 2 CDs that came in the Detox Box and became very angry that my Doctor could advise me to take Tylenol - knowing the effects on the liver. Check it out on Wikipedia. I wish someone would invent a little rubber-like mitt for babies knowing how they like to suck on their little hands. Also, pregnant women and children should not eat Tuna, Shark, Swordfish or Tilefish (whatever that is) because of the very high mercury content,(also from The Detox Box).

Hi! For my daughter, I use frozen saltine crackers. The cold feels good, and the salt helps to break down the gum a bit to allow the tooth to break thru (just like a salt scrub on your skin.. only to a lesser degree). She grabs them out of my hand when she's in pain and just sucks on it. Works like a charm.
The other thing I have is chewable jewelry I found at a fair. You can find it at www.chewablejewels.com or smartmoms.com. It's safe and dentist-invented, and you wear either necklaces or bracelets, and they can gnaw on them while your holding them. check it out!
