Teething - Dunlap, IL

My son has had diarrhea for about five days. I thought that is was from the medication that he was on but was not sure because he had been on it before and never had the poops. So I was reading in a book yesterday that it can be a sign of teething. Has anyone else had this happen and any ideas on how to help his poor little bottom? My daycare can only have three loose stools a day before he has to be sent home and this is getting costly at my job, so any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

What can I do next?

The best diaper rash cream I have ever used...and I run a daycare, so I've used several different kinds. It's even good for dry/chapped skin on hands and face. You can buy it at Wal-Mart.

I have three girls, all three of them had the loose stools with teething. I had the same problem with the day care and I had to pay even when they wearnt there. Try a supostiory. You can get them over the counter at walgreens or your doctor can give you a perscription. I know they are not the nicest things, but they help within hours. Good luck.

It could be possible. Every kid is different, and you will get to know his quirks. My kid only got a diaper rash when she was teething...and that would be the only symptom!!!!

Try bananas for his baby food! That sometimes helps with the diarrhea. Also, you may want to consider some pedilyte to prevent dehydration. I've found the best fix for sore bottoms is diaper rash cream covered with vaseline. Yes, its gross, but it works!!

Hi A.. Poor lil guy. I know his tush is probably sore! K...one thing to look at is his diet. Depending on his allergies, one of the best things you can do is the BRAT diet and help get some substance back into him.

Bananas
Rice
Apples/Applesauce
Toast

all though w/ him being only 9 mths...may forego the toast! :) but rice cereal, bananas & apples (babyfood acceptable) will help.

Also, I wouldn't use desitin on a raw bottom, but probably A&D Ointment. Also, a lil cornstarch in some warm bathwater....and letting his bum get some air (no diaper) if at all possible for a lil while.

I do know that their are several viruses going around that do include diarreah. A co-workers lil girl just had it for 2 wks.

Good luck!

Not to be too graphic, but my oldest daughter always had very slimy/mucusy stools when she was teething. Probably from all the extra saliva she was swallowing. What I would call diarrhea - when she had rotavirus - was much more watery.

We had good luck with Balmex for diaper rash. It usually gave significant improvement overnight.

Good luck!

I have four children and my boys, especially, had really bad diarrhea when they were teething. The jello water is a very good suggestion, so are the bananas and the BRAT diet. I've found that Boudreau's Butt Paste is excellent. If you feel like he is being burned by the acid in his stool, it can sometimes help to make a paste of vaseline or aquaphor and mylanta. The mylanta neutralizes the acid and the vaseline just keeps it on his tush. But it is more preventative, so I would try to get him healed up first.

My daughter ALWAYS had diarrhea when she was teething. She also had it anytime she drank juice. I could not give her juice till she was 18 months old.
But everytime she started getting a new tooth, she had bad diarrhea.

It may very well be a mild case of rotovirus instead of teething which usually lasts 5-7 days. It is spread very easily because the virus can live on surfaces for up to 2 weeks long. Unfortunately, there is no treatment other than to let it run its course and keeping your child from getting dehydrated. I hope he gets better soon and that this was helpful to you!

Poor lettle guy!My son always had a raw bottom when he was teething, his doc. told me to cut back on his solid foods and give him a mix of jello with a little water, like a juice thickness. Try corn starch on his bottom [its natural]put it in a clean sock pat it on afterevery change.Good luck!

I've found that Balmex works best on my son when he has a sore bottom. My son had the poops a couple of weeks ago and I was told that it was from teething because he didn't have any other symptoms of being sick...so that very well may be the case with your son as well. My pediatrician told me to feed him oatmeal, crackers, and bread to help firm up his stools and also make sure you keep him hydrated. My son likes the orange colored pedialyte best. I started feeding my son oatmeal for breakfast and crackers for snack after the dr said it would work and it did. His stool was firmer in just about a day after being runny for over a week. I hope this helps. :)

After 4 kids, I would not say that 5 days of diarrhea is because of teething. I am guessing a virus. Sometimes, those viruses can hang around for a long time especially when they are babies. I have seen them last in the 7 day range.

Unforunately, the viurs just has to run it's course. Being a working mom, I know it is difficult trying to figure out what to do with them. Hang in there!

I always use Paladine. My daughter would clear up in about a day. When she is teething she gets blood raw from the runny stools. We got a doctors note that said she had diarrhea from teething and she is not Contagious. You might want to ask your doctor for a note stating that. This way you won't miss work.
