Hi,
My son is 10 months and he is teething. He is constantly sticking his hand in his mouth and gagging himself. Does anytbody have any suggestions on how to stop this? He actually makes himself throw up and it drives me crazy. I have already done the obvious things like give him teething things to bite on and stuff like that and it doesnt work.

What can I do next?

Nothing you really can do! He is too young to understand why he shouldn't do it. He will outgrow it, don't worry. But if you haven't already try Hyland's teething tablets they are homeopathic and safer than Tylenol. They worked so well for my son and worked faster and longer than Tylenol or Ibuprofen. So maybe if he is not in too much pain he will stop? Worth a try. You can get them anywhere, ie. CVS, Stop & Shop, Walmart, ect.

Hi K.,

In addition to freezing twisted washcloths for the kids to chew on, I would put teaspoons in the ice bucket for a few minutes. When they were good and cold I would rub the gums with the back of the bowl. This would massage, chill and sooth them. My kids also liked the triangular, blue, nubbed teethers with the white handle available at WalMart. Chilled or frozen they worked great. When the kids were especially distressed I would put a little Baby Anbesol on the gums. Like everyone else said it seems like forever right now but it does pass.
Good Luck,
D.

Sometime what would work good too is a cold wet wash cloth for him to chew on.

My brother in law was also born prematurely. Of course, that was about 20 yrs ago! LOL But he had an issue with acid reflux. Indeed, it sounds as if your son is acitvely teething (image if he were 3 months! ughhhh that's what I had to go through with EACH of my four children). I think the fact that he's vomitting may have very little to do with him sticking his hands in his mouth, although it may seem to. I don't have any suggestions on how to stop it, teething rings worked for me! But, I think you should look more into it and notice his patterns of vomitting, not just the hands in the mouth...but if he's laying down or sitting up, how soon after eating, maybe after dairy or right before bed... and just see if there is something else going on.

My daughter did the same thing when she was teething. I'd give her a couple Hyland's teething tablets and that usually soothed her gums enough to get her hands out of her mouth. Good luck!

Yikes! My LO did this too - but once she gagged herself she has not done it again. I agree with the other post - let him chew on a cold wash cloth. DD cannot get enough of it. She'll even take the wash cloth from her bath and suck on it!
I've also heard of teething cloths that you can put frozen fruit into, and it helps. Good luck!

Hi K.
I have used Hyland's Teething Tablets with great success for my 10 month old. They dissolve in the mouth when they contact with the saliva and help fussiness and other behaviors. You can find them at Babies-R-Us or Herbal Path in Dover and probably Hannaford's natural section. I give them 3-4 times per day....lifesavers!!

Hi K. - I'm sure you will get all kinds of advice from people about the specifics of teething...

What I want to say is that this too shall pass... Let him do whatever makes himself comfortable. Soon you'll be on to the next - very different - thing, and then that will pass as well.

My only advice is to not try to get him to stop. Self comfortaing is one of the most important and long-serving gift you can give your child.

Seems to me he's doing exactly as he should. Let him comfort himself, learn the consequences, and then... on to the next phase!

It will pass. My daughter used to gag herself all the time and then eventually just stopped.

I am a modern girl, and as such have always been a Tylenol/Motrin kinda gal, turning up my nose at anything homeopathic. I have to admit that I tried the Hyland's teething tablets after reading so many good things about them at Mamasource and could now be their spokesperson/president of their fan club. Those tablets are little miracles and don't carry the guilt of medicating your child! Mine goes from crying and sticking his hands in his mouth to passed out in seconds. Talk about relief for all!

p.s. you can find them in the infant aisle at drug stores and even Target/Walmart.

I found that frozen fruits or veggies in mesh bags so they don't choke works wonders. You can find them at Target

I have no idea about this, but what i would caution you about is your reaction that you give your son when he does this.
He is obviously getting a reaction from you everytime he does it, i know it would drive me crazy also, but i would suggest that you contact your pedia about this as well
I would start not reacting to this, ignore him somewhat/he is getting negative attention from you???at this same time i would watch him so he doesn't get hurt, but make a routine where he knows this is not ok, I know this is kinda hard with a 10 month old... What i suggest you do is also start keeping a log of this time, so you have something to show the doctor the next time you are in and anything else that seems out of sorts

good luck to you

I also agree about the wet frozen wash clothes and we did the frozen teething rings as well, i think i used anything frozen that a baby could chew on... i have forgotten about those days and they were not fun, my kids were given alot of tylenol back then and i only had 1 gager.
