I have a 3 month daughter and she just started teething. I am still breast feeding her so all she wants to do is like chomp on my boob. I was wondering on if there was anything I could do to help her with the pain and anyway to protect my nipple from her chomping on it. I really appreciate any advice I can get. Thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. We decided to try the teething pills and orjale with tyenol. It has worked wonders. And as for her bitting me I have been taking her off and telling her no. She really seems to be coming around with that.

When my daughters bit, I just reacted. They bit, I said OUCH!!! It suprised them. They would open their mouth and look at me with a big ??huh??. It only happened a few times. When they looked at me and bit with a smile on their face, they lost nummies. Babies can not bite and suck at the same time. If they are biting, they are probably done feeding. The only time my daughter bites now is when she falls asleep and feels the nipple falling out, then she will bite it while trying to catch it.

In reading some of the other responses, your daughter is only 3 months old and is not going to understand being told no and is not going to put 2 and 2 together and know that she is being taken away from the nipple because she is biting, and just because she is chomping doesn't necessarily mean she isn't hungry anymore. My son is almost 8 months, only has 2 teeth and is on the bottle now, but he chomps on the nipple of the bottle, then drinks, then chomps, then drinks and so on. It's not only the nipple of the bottle, he also chomps on his toys. It's just something that babies do when they are teething and they will stop when they are ready to. This is going to sound really stupid but my BFF tried it recently and it worked for her. If you've ever pumped breast milk you've seen how easily it comes out. Get one of those big Playtex bottle nipples and place it over your nipple during her feedings. That way when she chomps, the rubber of the nipple is soothing to her gums and it doesn't hurt your nipples because her teeth aren't directly on there. If that doesn't work you could always just pump and then feed her breast milk from a bottle. I know how special and bonding nursing is, I only stopped because my milk dried up for some reason, but the most important thing is that she gets the nutrients from breast milk. Hope this helps. Best of luck!

P.S. Awesome name by the way!

I also breastfeed, and my daughter is 9 months. She was an early teether. She liked to bite me. I tried saying no firmly but only got a grin from her. I asked around and my aunt told me to thump her. I did and only had to do it once. It sounds mean, but I didn't do it hard and hurt her, it just startled her. She cried and then went back to nursing...The only times she starts to bite sometimes is when she is falling asleep. It's great that you are breastfeeding!!!!

I recommend Hyland's teething tablets for the babies pain (you can get them from Wal-mart). As for her biting you, this is your first experience with discipling her. You have to let her know that your breast is not something to bite. Gently unlatch her by breaking the seal between her mouth and your breast with your finger everytime she bites. Firmly say no that hurts mama, make sure you do that everytime. It passes pretty quickly once they learn they will not be nursed if they bite your breast. Worked quickly with my 2. Just hang in their and soon she won't bite anymore :)

My daughter did the same thing. I gave her a small flick the the cheek then took her away from the breast to punctuate the "no". you don't have to "flick" her hard just enough to startle her from the concentration of feeding.

Both my kids did it, but my son was not as agressive at eating than my daughter was, so it worked better with him. Lillie was very agressive at nursing and she had more trouble getting this. My doctor told me that, some babies are "chewers" and that I may never get her to "stop biting"

I found that a combination of things worked wonders with my son. I used hyland teething tablets along with tylenol and occasionally oragel. Teething tablets I found at walmart in the baby section with the bottles. It took a few trys to see what helped the most but we have it figured now.

It is recommended that when your child bites down on you while nursing you should remove them from the breast ans say no biting. Then put them down for a few minutes before you resume nursing. If you resume nursing and the baby bites again you should do the same thing, only this time don't resume nursing after a few minutes, end the feeding all together. Orajel, tylenol or motrin, and a wet rag that you placed in the freezer for a while help for the teething pain. The best is the teething tablets you can get from AAFES, if given every 6 hours like recommended they work wonders.

NEVER "flick" your baby. That is absurd! All you need to do is buy Hylands teething tablets, they dissolve instantly and are completely safe. I have 4 children and I swear by them! You can get them at Walmart and Target, also most drug stores.

The natural teething tablets worked wonders for my daughter. She did bite me a few times while breast feeding and I immedidatley told her "no bite!" and stopped the nursing session. It only took a few times of this and she never did it again.

The teething tablets work well, I've used them as well. I also let my son suck on frozen waffles. It seemed to do the trick- they're nice and mushy. I also got one of the little mesh bags where you can insert fruit or whatever- that way there's no chance of choking. You can pick them up at Wal-Mart or Target. They're about 5 bucks and they're wonderful! My son still uses them for pickles and he's a year old! Hope you find something that works for you!

You can firmly tell her no biting and then remove your nipple from her mouth briefly. Then resume feeding. If she continues then you can pump and bottle feed breast milk. This often times causes your milk production to drop some. Putting pacifiers in the frig help some, so does Tylenol and baby Anbesol which comes in swabs.
