About the only time that this can be a problem is if the tooth is impacted and will not come through the gums. Watch her for fever and other symptoms and if she starts to get worse then take her to a dentist right away. Otherwise this can be a symptom of normal teething.

My son has spent the last 2 weeks with his cheeks puffed out due to teething. Everyone asks him what is in his mouth. It's probably the tooth trying to pop through. We use (and swear by) Hylands teething tablets. The only place I can find them is King Soopers. They are wonderful. I even use them when my kids are cranky or overwhelmed.

teething can be quite painful. the tooth pushing through is creating a wound. do you remember your wisdom teeth? the tooth does not just push up quickly. the gum and cheek around the tooth can become very sensitive and swollen esp. with the back teeth. low grade fever often accompanies teething as well. it's completely normal. the only time i would be alarmed is if the area had white patches, or seemed to take to long to come in. a high temp as well could signal infection. just keep an eye on it.

try frozen bite size pieces of bananas to help. i never use orajel, though i do have a friend who loves it.

I'd highly recommend that you try Hyland's teething tablets for your daughter. They are homeopathic - completely safe - and worked really well for all of our children when they were teething. They may bring down the swelling, and would definitely help her be more comfortable while she's teething. You can give them every few hours. If the swelling doesn't go down after using them for a day, then I'd probably call the doctor and ask what they think.

Does she seem bothered by it at all? Or have a fever? You can try the teething tablets, and if those work, great. If not (they did nothing for my son), Tylenol/Motrin works great. Especially before bed to help them through the night. Hope she feels better.
