Teething - Winter Springs, FL

I believe my 3 month old daughter may be beginning to teethe. She's drooling a heck of a lot, and gnawing on her fists day and night like it's going outta style. At any rate, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on natural things to help her out when she seems to be in pain. Because my mother-in-law keeps trying to get me to give her Orajel, Tylenol, and other baby meds everytime she cries (which is normally just because she's tired) even though I've been very explicit about being all natural and not resorting to baby medications like Tylenol unless absolutely necessary. I've heard about the frozen bagel trick, and she doesn't seem pleased about cold teething rings. I just want to nip this one in the butt before it really gets started (MIL is driving me batty already and calling me 'cruel') and I couldn't find much on teething on this site and I'm wondering if I was looking in the wrong place. So I figured why waste my time looking and looking when I could just ask? Anyway, I'd really appreciate any info/advise I can get. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Have you heard of Hyland's Teething Tablets? They are homeopathic, and they worked GREAT for me. I have 7 children, and they worked well with every one. They dissolve on the tongue. Look for one in Walgreens, and read the label, and see if the ingredients would be acceptable to you?

You should try Hyland's teething tablets. They are homeopathic. Gerber teething biscuits and zweiback toasts are really good for her to chew on too but they are VERY messy. Oh, every pediatrician I've talked to said not to use the orajel or ambesol because babies swallow it and it numbs their throat...it can cause the baby to choke because when their throat is numb they have no gag reflex. Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK!

I saw that other moms recommended teething tablets. Hyland's makes a homeopathic one that you can find in Chamberlin's natural food or other health food stores. They helped with each of my 4 kids. I also used carrots the baby size or a cut up big one that they can hold and even my leather wallet! There are lots of things that you can use for chewing, just use your "mom sense".

Good luck with the MIL.

Try soaking a washcloth and then freezing it or letting your daughter knaw on a cold washcloth. That always worked for my 3 year old.

Hi J. - There are 2 natural remedies for baby teething out there...one is called Hyland's and I know Walgreens sells them. The 2nd one is the one I used (& my parents used w/me & my brother over 30 yrs ago!) is called Humphries "3"....WalMart carries these, but you have to ask for them at the Pharmacy couter (even though they are OTC). I would give my daughter 10-12 tiny pellets at a time. She loved them and they really seemed to take the edge off so she could sleep or just not seem to be in pain. The drooling does begin pretty early in all babies and I swore it was teething too, but my daughter didn't get her first tooth til she was almost 7 months old! Every baby is different though....Best of luck & I hope one of these natural remedies for teething works for you and your daughter!

I found my daughter liked a cold, wet, clean washcloth to chew on. I hadn't really found anything else that worked as well. She also did not like the teething ring.

Good Luck!

I used Humphry's on my daughter when she was teething. It's a natural herbal teething pill that is extremely small and melts in the mouth. It actually has a sweet taste to it but you have to get it in the little mom and pop drug stores. There's one in Tmpa on Fletcher before 15th st. Good luck!!!!

Hello,

I can't think of the exact name for them, but they are these mesh food holders with a handle on the end (Babies R Us, Target, etc). They are used to give kids fruit without them taking off big chunks and choking. I put a piece of a frozen banana in one and my son went to town on it when his teeth would really bother him. It gets better, hang in there.

3 months is really early for teething--but possible. It is also very normal at that age for a baby to be drooling like crazy and gnawing her fingers if if they are NOT teething. I kept a bib on my son at that age because the drool kept soaking all his clothes--and he didn't cut his first tooth until 6 months. You can actually see the white of teeth in their gums as they come down (or up). And their gums becomes pretty red right before (about 3 days-ish) before they cut.
But 3 months is really the very youngest you see kids cut their first tooth and it's not that common.
If you genuinely think she is teething, most natural remedies like teething tablets and clove oil or even those teethers that you freeze really only help with the gums when they are inflamed right before the teeth actually cut (same goes with the baby orajel).
So I think the battle here is more with your MIL than your 3 month old.
BTW Baby Tylenol is the only pain reliever considered safe for infants (remember it's the only thing we could take when we were pregnant). It is very safe, so when you feel you baby is really in pain from teething (like when she starts waking up unexpectedly in the night and can't be soothed any other way)--please don't feel guilty giving it to her.
It's mild and actually works if her mouth is actually hurting. And you will see a noticeably change in her mood 20 min after you give it to her ans it starts to work and then about 4 hours later you can tell when it wears off because she'll get cranky again. I understand you not wanting to medicate your child--esp that young and unnecessarily--and definitely not just to appease your MIL.
Good luck, I'm sure this won't be the last time you butt heads with your MIL!

the treething tablets are great but please take in to account that as adults we would not be able to handle the painof teething. razor sharp little teeth cutting thru gums on a baby who has never really experienced pain. alittle baby tylenol is not a bad thing...my peditrician preferred it over orajel cause that can leak down the throat and interfere with swallowing.

i'm a young mother of ofur kids and with them all i bought them teething blankets(it has a different texture on all four corners) it works pretty good, but honestly at three monthsi think she's just a drooly lil girl and she's started to notice her hands so thats the reason they are always in her mouth.lol if she's crying alot she probably in her peak stage of just crying alot, it does happen i've been thru it 4 times lol and loved it all now that i think of it. it could even be colic. have you asked your doctor?

Three months I believe is a little early. At that age they have found their hands and that sometimes causes the increased drooling. I'm not saying that it's impossible...anything is possible. The teething tablets are natural and they tend to help. You can find them at your local health food store. www.livegreeneasy.com

There are completely natural, holistic teething tablets, with chamomile and other stuff in every grocery store and Target. Also, I would get a mesh food feeder for one so young and put frozen fruit in it... banana, strawberries, kiwi, etc, in it, depending on what you think she can handle at that tender age. It's the most choke-proof way to give her something cold that also tastes good, that may help her with the teething pain.

Good luck!

I would check for crowning on the teeth before I gave anything. (Crowning is when you can see a swollen area in the gums that wasn't there before and will be where a tooth emerges, if one isn't there then she is not teething and you can tell you MIL where to put it!) My daughter liked a frozen washcloth when teething and though it got water everywhere it did keep her happy. We also did the Hylands teething tablets for sleeping and a exactly one drop of Tylenol (she would fall asleep with a wet washcloth and then wake up screaming from the pain about 15 to 20 minutes later, of course she had 8 teeth come in at once so big surprise the drop of Tylenol was the only thing that got her to sleep for an hour to an hour and a half.) My mom seems to be like your MIL in saying I was being cruel, while my MIL was all for the homeopathic way.

Every mother I know has told me to use Hyland's Teething Tablets. They work great. They are homeopathic and have no side effects. They dissolve quickly. They are in a pink box and you can get them at Publix, Winn-Dixie, Chamberlain's, and I believe Target. At that age you need to stick one under her tongue and make sure it dissolves. Once it's dissolved, I rub it on my baby's gums. Good luck.

Hi, well, w/my son I gave him tylenol @ night only before he went to bed, I tried not every night just in case. Also, I tried to give him cold stuffs, like example, in Walmart they sell this little plastic hot/cold teddy bears, and he loved it. Or even giving him juice(if you want mix it w/water) and ice on a bottle. And just like everyone else has said, at night mostly I gave him 3 little teething tablets (sorry I can't remember the name) they sell them at little stores (I saw them @ hispanic stores) and they have like pain releive and it looks like little sugar circles. Hope it helps! Good luck!

Our Pediatrician recommended putting a rolled up moist wash cloth wrapped in a sandwich bag in the freezer. Take it out of the bag after frozen, allow to thaw a little and then let the baby chew on that a little. You have to watch them so it doesn't come unwrapped but it worked for us.

I think all babies go through this starting at this age. It is not necessaryily teething, but it is possible. Even if it is, it does not mean that she is in pain. My son started at this age with chewing on his hand and for the next 6 months, I had a bib on him constantly except for when he slept. If he was awake, he had a bib on and I would have to change it every couple hours if not more. I had a huge stack of them! It never made him cranky, he wasn't in pain, it was just something he did. He didn't get his first tooth until 8 months old. Even then, I have never given him anything for teething and he is 2.5 now. It just never caused him problems, he just chews on his fingers so I have to keep them clean. He didn't go for the teething rings or cold clothes or anything else. The only think he sometimes liked was his plastic baby spoons.
You are not cruel, don't listen to her. I really doubt she is in any discomfort, she is just chewing to chew. The drooling will be around for awile!

My son has been doing the same things - gnawing on his fist, drooling, etc. - since he turned 3 months old and he is now about 4 1/2 months. He still has not gotten any teeth. When he turned 3 months, we thought he was teething - he would get very upset and sounded in pain and had trouble sleeping. But, we still can't feel the teeth trying to break through yet. He is a drooler though! He even gnawed on his hand so much one week, and didn't want the pacifier, that his skin cracked from being dry! You are not being cruel for wanting to be sure that your baby is healthy and doesn't get something she doesn't need. I agree! :-) Good Luck!

I used Hyland's Teething Tablets with both of my sons... from about 4 months old (they were early teethers too) until their 2-year molars came in. They were the ONLY thing that worked instantly and with no fuss. They are teeny, tiny and dissolve instantly, so there was never any worry of them choking. They are all-natural and can be found at any health foods store, but I've seen them at many grocery stores and pharmacies like Publix and Walgreens.
And tell you're mother-in-law that she has many, many years of nagging you about your "cruel" parenting skills... no need to start at 3 months old! ;-)
Best of luck and congrats on your wonderful little girl. Babies don't stay babies forever. What a fabulous time!

I really don't think it's teething. Most babies start drooling and fisting at this age. My son was like this and did not get his teeth for quite some time.
If you do think it's teething there is a teething Amber necklace that some swear by. Also, be careful of some homeopathic tablets. They contain caffiene.
