My son just turned 4 months and has been drooling and hands in mouth for over 6 weeks. When do babies teeth normally surface? My mom and I have a bet going, she seems to think he will break his first tooth on the top, they are whitish and swollen. Although, I have never heard of the top coming first, so I am betting for bottom first. My daughter, now three, was adopted and didn't come home til 8 1/2 months, but I did get to see her first tooth while we were with her, at 6 months and on top. Thanks for your thoughts.

What can I do next?

Teeth can come at any time. I know someone whose baby was born with a tooth. I also have a friend whose 2-month old son got his first tooth on top. My daughter is also adopted and we got her at a week old. She never got her first tooth till 12 1/2 months old! It came in on top. That same week she got two more teeth, one on bottom and the 2nd one on top. So, although it is more common to come in on bottom first, they can come in top first, and they can come at anytime. My daughter got bad with drooling at 4 months, but it would be 8 months later till she got a tooth! If you see whitish, though, its more than likely coming soon, but still could be a few more weeks.

I hope you mean 4 months old :) My son got both of his bottom teeth at once when he was about 3 months old. I bought about 4 tubes of baby orajel and just kept it around the house and also gave him tylenol as needed. Another thing you may want to try is Zewebe bread, they have it at walmart in the baby section, this feels good to their gums. Also the miniture bagels and freeze them and let your baby knawl on those. I also froze wet wash cloths, and if you squeeze the pacificer to let water in you can freeze the water in the pacifier.

Also, I would love to work from home, what do you do?

Teething, like everything, varies from child to child. Mine was teething when she was born (not kidding) and got her first two teeth when she was 2 months old. Yes - her first 2 were the bottom middle 2, BUT ... not every baby follows the same pattern of tooth emergence. Your son may very well get those top middle 2 first, but man - those were a bear compared to the bottom 2 for my daughter. Good luck to you with the teething - and with the teeth. (My daughter has always teethed really hard for up to 6 weeks before her teeth even broke the surface, and that's with all of them coming in early -- she's pretty much been teething non-stop since she was born!!!)

My daughter, who is 3 now, started drooling profusely and chewing on her hands at about 2 months old. She didn't actually cut any teeth until almost 6 months old. My 4 month old is following the same path as her sister with the drooling and chewing, but her gums aren't swollen yet, so I'm not expecting any teeth anytime soon. I've had friends who have kids who cut teeth as early as 4 months, but in general, it seem to occur between 5-6 months. Good luck!

Hi T.,
My youngest son got his first teeth on the top. He also got the front four and then got his canine teeth, and then got the ones in between. I had never seen anyone get teeth in that order. The doctor said they can come in any order at all and it's just fine. Tell us who wins the bet.

T.,
I guess they can come in at any time--I've heard of babies born with a tooth! It sounds like he is showing the classic signs: drooling, hands in mouth, etc.

it sounds like the teeth will come in soon. my son had one in the bottom and then within a few days one in the top. he is a year old and currently has only four teeth. babies can get teeth in as early as 4 months as late as 8 months. aker sure to give your son tylenol for infants if he is in pain and try hylands teething tablets for his teeth. they are natural and do not taste bad like ambesol. can buy those teething tablets in grocery store like pathmark or walmart.

My daughter got her first tooth at 4 1/2 months -- much earlier than her sisters (at 7 mos and 9 mos). every kid is different. I was concerned that 4 1/2 mos was so early, but my ped said it just means hers will fall out sooner.

My son started drooling at 3 months & did not get his first tooth until 6 months. He got a bottom tooth first, but it doesn't really matter. We are always thinking he is teething, yet he only just cut his 4th tooth now & he's 11 & 1/2 months! Good luck with yours. i hope he teeths faster than mine. :)

My daughter started drooling and chewing on everything at 3 months old- everyone said she was teething and to expect those "little chompers" soon. Well, she is over 8 months old now....and she's got nothing (lol). Not one tooth!
They get them when they get them....each child is different. My nephew got his lower teeth when he was two months old. Guess it is just a waiting game!

My son got his first 2 teeth on top, then the 2 on the bottom came, then 2 on top, and it went on like that even to this day :D So it does happen, but I guess its more rare than usual LOL. My son started cutting teeth early, He had 4 teeth by the time he was 4 months old. There is rally no way to tell when their teeth "normally" surface though. My daughters teeth bother her for months before they surface, but my sons teeth, I knew his would surface within a couple weeks of them bothering him and drooling, etc. It all depends on the child :D

Hope this helps hun.

What do you do from home? I work from home as well!

It varies. Most kids don't get their first teeth until around 5 months. My daughter got her first teeth at three months old. My sons followed in her footsteps. It depends on the child. It may not be teeth yet but they seem to drool a little more and seem to work on them a long time before the teeth really start to push on their little gums and break through.

My son got his bottom front teeth first but they were closely followed by his top eye teeth. He looked like a little vampire. I think his little brother got one of his top eye teeth first and then his bottom front teeth and then the top middle teeth followed by the other eye tooth and the bottom tooth to the right of his front teeth from my perspective. He has had those 7 teeth for months but none of the others have come in so far. Although he chews like crazy on the sides, so I am sure we will be cutting some molars soon (He is 11 months. Almost time for those first year molars.).

As I said, each child is different. It could be either top of bottom. I think it is typically bottom that comes in first but that is not always the case. Good luck.
