does oragel work for teething infants? what suggestions do you have for me and my 6 month old. he was able to start motrin--which seemed to help--but wondered if there are any other suggestions?
I chilled teething rings for my children when they were teething. The teething cookies, which are thick & messy, worked as well. Using various methods work best, because they get bored quickly. I hope these suggestions help.
I used Hyland's homeopathic teething tablets or
Hyland's homeopathic Chamomilla 30X. These help to calm baby, reduce inflammation and pain.
I used teething tablets. You can get them at WalMart in the vitamin section. You just put one or two in their mouth and they disolve quickly. They are also great for gas and tummy aches. Good luck!!
My pediatrician, who uses many natural remedies suggests cleaning some rough washcloths (no detergent) and then freezing them. He explained to me that when infants are teething it feels painful as well as itchy. The washcloth texture relieves the itching.
We would wet a washcloth, stick it in the freezer for a while, and then let them 'chew' on it when it was a little cold/firm. Just don't soak it and give them a block of ice, b/c that can further irritate their little gums. Good luck!!
One other mom mentioned this and I just have to second it - HURRICANE GEL! My almost 2 year old got all of his teeth in just a few months and the hurricane gel was the only medicine that lasted longer than a minute to relieve his pain. My Publix pharmacy had it behind the counter, we just had to ask for it (my DR told me about it). I also put ice chips in the fruit strainer for him to suck on, but that got messy.
The Hurricane Gel is thick and you just need a tiny little dab, or it will cause them to drool alot.

We used Hyland's teething tablets! They are not toxic and will not hurt their little developing organs like Motrin and Tylenol!!!! Look on the internet for how many law suits over infant deaths there are for over dosing (using the recommended dosage) for Tylenol!
I LOVE homeopathy!!!! I came around the corner to find my little girl had eaten a bottle of one of the remedies. I had no concern for her safety.... had it been Tylenol or Motrin, it would have been a trip to the hospital!
The other thing to think about with the Oragel... it numbs the mouth and is hard to keep just to the area that is hurting.... I personally hate the feeling of my mouth being numb!
Cold things for them to chew on often will feel good as well!

My son is one year old this month, and he has 11 teeth. When he teethes, he usually cuts multiple teeth at one time. (He actually got three top teeth in one day!) His pediatrician recommended Hyland's teething tablets and gel. They are all natural and can be found at most grocery stores. The tablets dissolve instantly (My son began using them at three months after my husband and I both tested them out.), and they begin to work almost instantly. I didn't like the idea of constantly medicating my son, so these provide a nice alternative. Good luck with the teething!
Hylands teething tablets are all natural and dissolve right away once in the mouth. They worked GREAT for my daughter. They can be found at Walgreens. You could also try the
Baby Safe Feeder at Babies R Us. It allows you to put frozen fruit into a safe little mesh bag with a handle. Your son would get a lot of relief from the coldness and inturn, he would get some nutrition from the fruit. You could use frozen apples, peaches, banana, anything to hold some form for a while. It will get a little messy, but the distraction will be fun for him and take his mind off the teeth:)

My daughter is 7 months and has 2 teeth. We really preferred the Little Remedies brand over Oragel. Little Remedies does not contain unneed additives like accharin. Their formula is thicker but it seems to stay on the effected area better instead of numming the whole mouth and starting the "drool pool" Here's their website if you want to check it out. Also, their Gripe Water is a miracle for hiccups and colic!
What I used with my daughter now 8, dip a baby washcloth in their favorite juice and put in freezer for about 30 minutes or until you need it. Then when they start hurting take it out and let them chew on it. They love the juice and the frozen part helps their gums.
My dr recommended the the teething tablets. I loved them. The key was to give her 3 every 4 or 5 hrs. They are all natural and they like the taste. I have friends that swear by something new that you can only find at natural food stores. I'm not exactly sure what it's called but it comes in a box with tiny tubes of camomile and some other all natural ingredients to relax the baby as well as sootthe the pain. All I know is my daughter hated Orajel the first time I tried it on her at 4 months and we never used it again. Hope this helps.

What I found helped my daughter when she was teething was, of course, tylenol/motrin for the pain but she also seemed to like when I would put an ice cube (or crushed ice) in a washcloth (clean of course:) and let her chew on that. I would put a rubber band around the ice cube to keep it in place. I guess the ice helped numb her gums and the washcloth gave her something with texture to chew on. Hope this helps!!

It did for my children. I bought Baby Oragel and used that. I would rub it on their gums and then give them Motrin. By the time the Oragel started to wear off, the Motrin had kicked in. Tylenol never worked for my kids at all while they were teething. Good luck to you.

I also do know that Tylenol and Motrin are completely safe as long as you don't give more than the recommended dosage, and never more than a few days in a row. If you are unsure of the correct dose for your baby, contact your pediatrician or talk with a pharmacist.
I used the oragel swabs with my son. He got his first teeth about a month ago (the bottom ones)and it worked really well. The swab was nice because it massaged his gums. It worked instantly.
My son, now 4½ years old, really loved ice. So, I used a food strainer. It looks like a very small net on a ring. You can find them at Target in the baby food service section. Normally, this is used to mush vegetables and other foods. We used it for one cube of ice. He would suck on it all the time and this made him happy.
Kid-E-Calc is awesome! Typically when a child is having great difficulty with teething, it's due to lack of calcium. If you get the Kid-E-Calc, which you can get from www.herbsfirst.com or www.worldhealthdepot.com (a little cheaper) and then rub it on the gums, it will help instantly for some babies. It's an extract that is safe for little ones! HTH!
I use Hylands teething tablets and also frozen carrots (regular sized not baby) or frozen washcloths.
I'm a big fan of Boiron's Camilia teething relief. It's homeopathic and 100% natural, which isn't true of Orajel. Boiron products are at Whole Foods. Ask your doctor about Motrin. I've heard conflicting information about its use in children under two years of age. I used baby Tylenol drops as well. Good luck.

Hi M., the oragel actually has apartame in it which is the same stuff they put in Diet products. I don't suggest that. But what i do encourage is homeopathic rememdies. We have a local market here in Canton. They are great. Although I don't know where you live. I have actually found homeopathic teething drops, they are by "Gentle Naturals" green pkg. with winnie the pooh and eeyore on the front. Not many placed carry them. Walgreens, sometimes Kroger. My son like this one. "HYlands" has a teething gel that you rub on. But my son has done real well with the Gentle Natruals brand. Good Luck and let me know how it works for you.

I just wanted to give another shout for Hylands Teething Tablets. They worked wonders for our son!
I love teething tablets which can be found at Kroger or Walmart for sure. They are homopathic and my daughter actually likes how they taste. Also the teething rings are great but refridgerate them not freeze them because they become too cold for the little fingers to hold.
I used both orajel and teething tablets for my kids and they both worked well.With the teething tablets you don't have to worry about dosage and spacing it.
The teething tablets worked wonders for my children. You can buy them anywhere.

We used Hyland's Teething Tablets for our twin girls when they were teething. The tablets are tiny and dissolve in their mouths and are homeopathic. You can get them at most pharmacies (CVS, Target, Walgreens...). A frozen wash cloth can also help or any teething ring with water that can be frozen and has some bumps on it. Good luck!
There are teething tablets (all natural) in the baby section, you can give them two at a time. I used them with my baby, and they seemed to work better than the motrin or tylenol.
Yes, I found that baby oragel works well. They make a "q-tip" with the oragel in the stick, too. You just pop the stick and the medicine goes to the tips. It gives you much more control when rubbing it on their gums. We also used homeopathic teething tablets that seemed to help, too.

Gentle Naturals worked for us. They are teething drops. You can find them at Target. They have Winnie the Pooh Characters on the bottle.

We used "Hurricane Ointment" for both our boys; now ages 4 1/2 and 18 months. It was recommended by one of our neighbors and really does the trick! The pharmacist at Publix ordered it for us - it comes in different flavors. We continue to keep a supply on hand at home, in the diaper bag and at daycare since our 18 month old is still cutting teeth!
We use teething tablets found at Publix, Babies R Us. Cold teething toys and gum massages w/wash cloth.
Oragel makes a product just for teething babies. I think it's called Baby Oragel -- I would NOT use the Oragel marketed for adults.
Motrin's great -- just remember to have food on the tummy or else he'll have a tummy ache.
Frozen green beans, cold carrots, even wash cloths wet with cold water and rung out.
Just stick with the motrin if that's what your doctor recommended. Our doctor told me that oragel toughens the gums making it harder for the teeth to push through in turn making teething even worse.

You can find them at Walgreens, and Walmart may carry them as well. I read somewhere that the Orajel can actually toughen a baby's gums which makes it harder for the teeth to come through.
I would also freeze a very slightly dampened washcloth (PLEASE be sure it has NOT been washed in BLEACH!!!!!) in a bag and let them use that as a teether.

I actually found that the homeopathic remedies that they sell at Whole Foods / Harry's Market worked really well. My little guy also loved to chew on crushed ice or cold pieces of fruit in those teether bags with a handle that they sell at Babies R Us...a frozen peach or even an ice cube worked great. My son also loved the frozen teether rings that he could hold on to...they sell some that have handles that don't get their hands so cold.

My daughter is now 18 months old but she has had the worst time teeting since she was 6 months old. She has always cut 2 at a time. I always gave her a little tylenol for infants and put some baby orajel on a teething toy or a infant toothbrush. She really liked chewing on a toothbrush, even now that she has teeth. I think the brissels feel good on her gums.
I have not read through all the responses, so I don't know if someone else has warned you of this, but Oragel can cause choking. The gel numbs their mouth and can numb their throat. Because they have SO much drool while they are teething, they can choke since they are numb and can't properly swallow. This can be very dangerous and I have been warned by several people to stay away from the Oragel.
We have had a lot of luck with the teething tabs. They are much more natural and work!

Oral gel worked well for my daughter but not for my son. I had to use teething tablets for him and tylenol when it was really bad!!
I was told to rub a little real vanilla extract on his gums... I haven't tried it with my son(7.5 months) but my daughter (6 years) has sore gums where she is cutting adult teeth and it works great for her!! Slightly numbing, yes I tried it too! I am going to check on it's safety for infants, although I was told by a trusted friend it is safe!
just wipe his mouth out first so that you can apply the oragel to one place instead of him numbing his entire mouth. A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY. By the way they make oragel for babies. There are also teething tablets I forgot their name but it starts with H. FROZEN FOODS COLD COLD COLD COLD.
