Teething 11 Week Old?

Am I crazy to think my 11 week old baby is teething? She is happy and laughing one minute and then cranky and irritable the next. She is chewing on her hands, my hands, her blanket or anything that gets close to her mouth. She is drooling like crazy and is not interested in eating a full meal today. She is a very healthy baby...does this sound like teething? It seems so early! Has anyone had any experience with their babies teething before 3 months old?

What can I do next?

You are not crazy! I had noticed my son doing the same thing at about 8 weeks. Without me even mentioning it at his 2 month appointment, the pediatrician pointed out that he was teething. He showed me how his gums were bulging. He also said that teething and tooth eruption (actually coming through) are two different things, so while he is teething he may still not get teeth for quite a while. I was quite shocked that it could happen so young too. Hope this helps!

Hi M., My son had two teeth @5 months, thought that was early. Then my daughter had two @ 3 and half. So yes she could be teething.

My son started with an insane amount of drool at 2 months & at 4 months he got his first tooth. The upside - he was done much sooner than some kids.

I had this same problem. I recommend Hylands Teething Tablets. I also went to Whole Foods and bought some chamomile tablets, crushed them and rubbed the powder on the inside cheeks and gums. It works great for calming a fussy baby. You can use it any time for colic or teething. Your baby will be more relaxed.

No you are not crazy. My little girl started teething when she was three months old!
I gave her Hylands Teething Tablets and they worked great. When the pain was too much, I would give Infant Tylenol and would use some numbing gel as well.
She did not like teething rings or washcloths, but she loved those little Sassy Teething Feeders. The ice stayed in the mesh covering that locks, so there was no danger of choking and it lasted so much longer than anything else. You can find them at Babies R Us.

Good Luck!

M.,
My son began teething at about 2 months of age! I couldn't believe it. Several teeth appeared and then the gums would cover them again. I asked the doctor about this and she said that noone ever believes her that it happens. So, your baby may have teeth appear and then go away. One thing that my pediatrician recommended and my son loves is frozen bananas. I put a piece of a frozen banana in one of the infant feeder bags, and it really seems to help. Plus, it tastes great! Just make sure your baby has plenty to chew on. I've also given my baby teething tablets. They really seem to help when he can't sleep because he's teething. Ask your doctor what he/she recommends. Good luck!

Yes, it is possible. My little guy cut his first tooth at 4 months old. The teething starts weeks or even months before the tooth even erupts. My niece cut her first tooth at 3 months!

Absolutely! Yes, sounds like teething. Both my kids did the same thing and everyone thought I was crazy for thinking they were teething. Sure enough, right before 3 months, they got their 1st teeth. So, it is possible! Good luck!

M.,

You are not crazy, mine was showing the same teething symptoms since 8 weeks. He is also an early eater; he started soft solids just before four months. So just look for clues like her eying your dinner plate and possibly smacking her lips.

I also use Hylands teething tablets, and they seem to work for my son. I am not really sure how they work, but they do for him and thats all I care about. =)

my son started teething at 11 weeks. The best thing for him was baby teething tablets and infant tylenol (dye free) the red dye actually winds kids up.

I made sure his teething toys were always cold...they seemed to help his gums...when he was fussy i would hold him or nurse him...

now at almost a year he is still cutting teeth but doing much better

She could be but could also be a very oral kid. sometimes mine gets very oral when she's gassy. I was convinced my oldest was teething even though my dr said most likely no. Sure enough, no teeth until 8 months of age.

Wow! My 4 month old daughter is going through the same thing I think. I was just about to ask this very question and now I have some great advice. She is chewing on her hands constantly and drooling much more than usual. Thank God she has not had colic at all but I have heard the stories regarding tummies and teething. I am preparing myself with just about everything on the market and family advice. Each baby is different and I am sure you will find what works for your little one.

It's never too early to consider teething an issue. Many babies, including my own, have teething pain months before a tooth is even close to erupting through the gum. It can't hurt to offer her teething rings (especially chilled ones) or even a rough terry wash cloth to chew. Be sure to mention it at her upcoming doctor's visit so that her doctor can rule out other causes of her irritability. Good Luck!

I don't think you're crazy. To our surprise, when we went in for my daughter's four month checkup, her bottom two teeth had already poked through after so much drooling and chewing on everything! Now she is fifteen months old, each time a new set of teeth come in, I swear she "teethes" for a month or so before they finally poke through! Hang in there, and congratulations on your little one. I know you're tired but...enjoy her!

Yes, she could be teething. Orajel teething gel helps some. Dose her with Tylenol. Also, cold teething rings and the Razzberry pacifier. Good luck.

It sounds like it could be teething. 11 weeks is not too early. Two of my kids had teeth by 12 weeks. Good luck. Tylenol really does work wonders with teething.

Yes it is not rare for a baby to start teething before 3-5 months . My last child started teething early . She was born in Sept. 04 and by Christmas time that year she had 4 . They say when a child teeths early that they will be a late walker and this is true . She got her teeth early and started walking about 15-18 months. If she is real cranky try the teething tablets and vanillia extract ( rub on gums ) . Orejel will numb her throat . We gave our little girl the teething tablets under her tongue (they dissovle) (about 4-6),
rubbed the area with the vanillia extract, and also gave her tylenol or motrin . She was not cranky after that ! Also if she is teething she will be drooling alot and chewing on stuff . Try looking at her gums to see if you see a white spot . If u do that is a tooth coming in !! Good Luck !!

My son is 7 months and has had similar teething symptoms since he was 12 weeks. Still no teeth! If he is really uncomfortable it helps if I firmly rub my finger back and forth on his gums about 20 times before he nurses. I figure it helps with the counter pressure. Good Luck!

My sister was born with two teeth. My poor mom even nursed her. The problem with early teeth is the chance for sooner decay and other mouth problems. I'm sure you are already doing it, but if your daughter is teething, keeping her mouth, gums, and teeth clean after every meal is even more important now than ever.

Good luck and happy chewing

No, you are not crazy...my first son had 2 teeth at 3 months old and 2 more at 4 months. He got 2 to 4 teeth every month and had a mouth full by 9 months. You can imagine how silly he looked-an infant with tons of teeth :) He quit breast feeding at 4 months. But had no problem taking a bottle once he got the hang of it.

Second boy did not get his first tooth until 7 months and they are still coming in VERY slowly. He is 18 months and has 10 with 3 more working their way in. He breast fed until 10 months and transitioned staight to a cup.

Good luck.

It is possible that your baby is getting teeth. My first daughter was so fussy. She had two teeth before her third month check up. I told the doctor when we went to her second check up that I thought she was teething and he laughed at me. So when she had two very prominent teeth by the third visit he apologized and said “I need to listen to my mothers more.”

My daughter's first 2 teeth came through at 4 1/5 months (although, she started the process much earlier), so I wouldn't rule it out. You can try some teething tablets. I think she is too young for Motrin, but you might ask your pediatrician. Tylenol or Baby Orajel may work too.

Congrats on your new little one!

Hi M.
My oldest son had all the signs of teething at about the same age and these went on for about 2 months then he got his first teeth at around 5 months (pretty early). He is now nearly 5 years old and he lost his first TWO teeth at 4 1/2. Our pediatric dentist said teeth have there own calendar and it is ok. He did say if they get their teeth early then they may loose them early but this is fine. So don't worry about early teething - it does happen!! I guess we just have to look after them for longer!! I found that the teething tablets worked great as they are safe for babies - they disolve as soon as they get placed under the tongue and they seem to relieve the crankiness.
Good luck

You are not crazy . . . My daughter actually cut her first tooth one week shy of 4 months old. Her pediatrician said it was early but not unheard of. Prior to that, I didn't think she was teething because it was "too early". One thing I have learned is to remember the average age for any stage of develoment is just an average, which includes babies/children that develop "early" and "late", but are still "normal". My daughter is now a beautiful healthy 8 year-old. According to the averages, she developed some things "early", "late" and "on-time".

Hey M., from experience, it is possible for a 3 month old to be teething. I was 2 months with I started. I bit my mother breastfeeding and immediately went to bottle fed.

I suggest allowing your little one either the orajel or the teething tablets with the cold teethers.
