Teeth Grinding - Lafayette,CA

My nine and a half month old daughter has 3 teeth on top and 2 on the bottom. The other day she started grinding her teeth. It sounds like there is something hard, like a piece of plastic or metal in her mouth but we have checked and there is nothing in there. It started a few days ago and she's starting to do it all the time. Is this normal? Is there anyway to prevent her from doing it? The noise is horrible and I'm afraid she's going to chip a tooth!

What can I do next?

Looks like you have enough responses but my youngest son has at times ground his teeth so hard it is painful to listen to. Somehow, his teeth still seem to be in good shape, and he's 14, although it's hard to believe from how hard he grinds them sometimes that he has any teeth left at all.

Hi J.,
Check out my profile for my experience in this area. Your daughter is completely normal. Most babies do grind their teeth at first. It is something new that feels funny and sounds weird. My daughter did it for a few months when she had about 6 teeth and now at almost 3 yrs old she has beautiful teeth and doesn't grind. Make sure to really brush those new teeth daily!! ECC (early childhood caries) is on the rise in the U.S. and is very serious. Now is the time to wean her from middle of the night feedings (if you haven't already). As to sleeping, try an early bedtime (if you aren't already) around 6-7pm with naps at 9am and 1pm. If you want any advice, email me.
Sincerely,
L.

J. B,

It sounds like your little one is well on her way to acquiring more teeth. My pediatician told me when my daughter started teething that she may grind her teeth, stating it relieves pain and pressure on the teeth and gums. Also the fact that new objects are in her mouth, she is getting used to them. I would suggest purchasing a couple of teething rings and let her go at it.

My daughter did the same thing. When I asked they dentist they said it was normal. And if you or your husband grind your teeth she will continue, otherwise most likely she will stop doing it. My husband and his mother do it and my daughter is 7 now and still does it but not every night like when she was about 3 or 4.There is nothing the dentist will do at this point, but I know wha tyou mean I thought, she is going to break her teeth, but it's been 4 years and no broken teeth, but I would as your dentist.

My daughter is 4 and still occasionally grinds her teeth at night. I know this because i still sleep with her. Grinding is completely normal as my dentist has told me. It will go away, but it's an even bigger problem if you can hear it because your sleeping right next to her and can't get any sleep. Although grinding can wear the teeth out, their only baby teeth so they'll fall out eventually, and when you an adult you can always wear the mouth guards. Also, if you try to google tooth grinding it'll give you tons of information.

Hi J.,
I have an almost 2 year old and I remember him doing the same thing. It creeped me out and I was worried about it being normal and if it would chip his teeth. I asked my aunt and mom who both cringed and said "oh yeah, we remember that with you guys". Apparently, it's very normal (I guess they've suddenly got these weird things in their mouths and discover that they can make noise with them???) and it comes and goes. My son did it for a few days, would stop for months, suddenly do it again off and on for a few days, etc. He's actually did it again a couple weeks ago. It still gives me the creeps, but at least it's way less often now than when he was a baby.

It is completely normal! It will probably last for a few days or weeks, and then she'll get tired of it and move on to something else. She's only doing it because it's something new to her.

Hi J., I have expierienced this with my son who is now 5 1/2yrs old now. It's more of an annoying noise, she shouldn't chip any of her teeth. Our dentist has been keeping a close eye on my son's teeth, and so far no serious problems. As soon as she turns one, find a good pediatric dentist, and inform them about the problem so that they can assess the situation. I think that if it still bothers you, you should call a pediatric dentist now, they might take her in now. Good luck. R.

Our pediatrician warned us at our 9 month visit that our daughter may start grinding her teeth and that it is perfectly normal. She hasn't tried it, though I imagine it is quite unnerving!

Hi J.,
My daughter did the same thing at about the same age. I gave her a binki which she chewed on instead. Her fascination with the sound and sensation of grinding went away within a couple of months. Hope this helps.
Good luck :)

My daughter did the same thing, I was told that her teeth and gums itch or just feel funny and that's why. I found it impossible to bear as well, but it did stop. she didn't break any teeth.

she's probably just exploring her new teeth and will stop on her own before long. she probably won't chip a tooth. Baby teeth are simply there to hold the space for the adult teeth so don't worry so much. If you are reacting to the sound she makes when she grinds her teeth, that will probably encourage her to do it more. Try to ignore it.

I have two girls and mine both did it. I think it comes along with teething and they both stopped doing it after their teeth would come in. Haven't had a problem with it since. Its just an awful sound!

my 2.5 year old did the same thing with the teeth grinding as a baby, and i actually forgot about it until i read your post, because he no longer does it. it was a stage he went through and really i couldn't figure out how to stop it so we just went through it, didn't give him attention for it, and eventually it resolved itself. although it's rather annoying at times, i'd say just be patient and hopefully she'll outgrow it!

all three of my children grind. It is normal, I checked with the dr. and dentist and they said it was ok (I don't agree that it's ok). there is nothing you can do about it now. Until they are older, they don't have mouth guards for the younger ones. This caused my 6 year old to need a baby root canal (why I don't agree that it's ok). We decided that if she is not in too much pain, we will wait 'til her teeth fall out. If she has too much pain, then we will have to get the job done. Sorry I didn't have better info for you. I wish I did. This is what I have been told. I know it sounds horrible. My oldest is 13 and still does it. I do it sometimes in my sleep, so that's where they got it from. I don't have any serious damages other than small grooves on the top of my teeth. So it may or may not go away.

Brush her teeth... They are probably dirty even if they are really tiny - get some baby toothpaste and wipe them down twice a day.

my son did it also and it is horrible, fortunately it only lasted couple months. it didnt hurt his teeth and i think it is there way of figuring out what things are. everythung goes in their mouth and between their tongue and teeth they figure out if they like something or not , does iy feel good to bite it or not, then my son figured it felt good to gring his teeth, although i never saw teeth grinding on each other whstever was going on in there was terrible sounding.....think it is very normal though

My son also was grinding his teeth when he first got them. There is nothing you can do. They will just stop. It is a new feeling for them to have teeth. I found that whenever my son gets more teeth he grinds them for a few days. I use a pacifier sometimes so he has something in his mouth to chew instead of his own teeth. The grinding sounds awful but it is only temparary.

Hi. My son does the same thing. His pediatrician said not to make too much of a big deal about it because they'll just do it more. He's 20 months now and still does it when he's really excited. I wouldn't worry too much, but if you find a way to get her to stop, please let me know!
