Teen Music Tutor. Pay as Much as Professional Musician/teacher?

We were given the name of a high school student who can tutor my d on her instrument. The adult who found her thinks I should pay her what a professional charges, but I don't. The professional is much more experienced and has expenses.
The professionals are booked up already. The girl is not coming to our house. The tutoring will be done at school. Professionals get $20-25 per session near us and I am on their waiting lists. I think $10 is enough but I want to be fair. It is 30 minutes, once a week.

So What Happened?

She is an excellent teacher and I like not having to drive one more place. I still think it is way too much for a teen, but we need the help so I am going to pay it. Thanks, Ladies.

As a professional musician......the going rate for lesson is $40/hr MINIMUM and can go as high as $150-200. A babysitter gets $10/hr these days, I'd say you're looking at least $15-18 even for a high schooler for a learned skill. Sorry.

How long is a session? I pay a teenage boy (older brother of my son's friend) $10 for a half hour of drum lessons, which I think is fair.

Ask her what she charges. She may not be a professional, but she is the best you can get right now, so either pay what she asks or wait for one of the professionals to open up.

THat is what I paid our teen to teach my daughter violin, and the other who taught the other daughter drums.
$10 a half hour is very fair.
Also if you do not want to use the teen your friend recommended go to the high schiools and ask the band director if he has any recommendations.

My teen age daughter teaches guitar lessons for 30 minutes once a week for $20 a month. That works out to $5 a session. They come to our house. Maybe you can ask her what she charges. I think $10 is good. =D

I think $10 for a teen student already at school for a half hour is good.

My daughter's experienced piano teacher charges $13. YES we are in a SUPER cheap town, but even in the "fancy town" next to us, the retired concert violinist teaches violin for $20 per half hour.

$10 per hour for any teen is plenty for most jobs. I think to get it for a half hour is great.

I think $20 a week is an extremely cheap price. If my child wanted the music lessons and the student were able to provide correct instruction I would be happy to pay that. Good luck!

Wow, even the "Professionals" in your area, are not charging much, compared to my area/city. Here, it is a lot more.

I would give her $12.
30 minutes, is not long.
How old is your child?

If this student, has never tutored anyone else... they she may not have, any idea, on what to charge herself.
And it is not up to you, on what to pay her.
It is the Tutor... that sets the rates. No matter what the age is.
So... the TUTOR, has to set the payment rate. You need to ask her.
It is either a flat rate or hourly.

I would speak with the tutor and negotiate a rate. I think $10 is a fair price. No way should you pay her the going rate for professionals.

We pay our private tutor, violin for 16 yr old who has played since 11 yrs old $30 per 1/2 hour.

We had one tutor, FANTASTIC, and we only stopped because of both schedules.... the tutor played for a local orchestra, and charged $1 per minute

I would not think a hs student would get the same amount of $ but at the same time, you are paying for the student's time.

I'd ask your orchestra or band director for guidance
