Tamiflu for H1N1

My 19 month old has been dianosed with H1N1 and has been precribed Tamiflu. I am 22 weeks pregnant and my OBGYN is suggesting that I start taking Tamiflu. I have not been diagnosed and have not been vaccinated. Has anyone experienced or know of any side effects from taking Tamiflu, whether for an infant or during preganancy? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I don't know about any side effects, but Tamiflu will not prevent you from getting the flu. I only helps you get better faster if you already have it. If you take it and you don't have the flu, you can still get the flu once you quit taking it.
Tamiflu is not a preventive medicine.

I would seriously consider more research. I have not heard good things. I am shocked he would want you to take it even when you dont have the flu.
Good luck.
there are so many other ways to boost your immune system and keep you and your family healthy, even when pregnant. Why go straight to meds when you do not even have any symptoms. Yikes!

I don't know much about taking it during pregnancy, but when we all had the H1N1 they put my 18 month old daughter on it and it was a lifesaver! Her flu was a few days long rather than the week the rest of us had it. The Dr. did say it can cause hallucinations and there were some other side effects. My 18 month old had a 106.0 fever and was not handling the flu as well as everyone else and that was part of the reason we decided to go with it for her. (everyone else was past the 'window of opportunity' for Tamiflu by the time we went to the DR.)
Good Luck! Take it easy and get lot's of rest!

I would not do it, no way no how. Why take something if you don't need it? Boosting your immune system naturally (Vitamin C, various herbs) is much more practical then taking meds that you don't need. An experienced herbalist can tell you what is safe during pregnancy (most are, but then I had midwives who were pretty forward thinking as well). Maybe I'm the weird one but I wouldn't take anything I don't need.

I am pregnant and was told to start taking it as soon as I got the H1N1. I have 4 children and none of us got the vaccine. All four of my kids got sick but it was mild and I don't know if it was H1N1 or just a cold. My OB wants me to get vaccinated and take Tamaflu being pregnant but I'm so allergic to vaccines and most medications that I haven't done anything but natural prevention... gargle with warm salt water and swab out your nose with it twice a day... be sure to take good prenatals. I've been giving my children extra vitamin C, Vitamin D3 and antioxadants... I just take prenatals and do the salt water gargle. It's suppose to help prevent it from becoming infectious. My children and I are so allergic and so I've been successful so far with natural prevention... I'd go with what you feel is best. If you're leaning toward waiting then wait, or if you're leaning toward taking it now, then take it. I know pregnant people are most vulnerable! Good luck!!

Honestly I would do it. Pregnant women are extremely susceptible to it. Had you asked me this question a month ago I probably would have brushed it off and say take your chances. But being that I work in a hospital and have recently known of a woman that lost her baby and then pass away my mind has been changed. Trust me, this has not been the only case. I would also recommend being vaccinated as I am sure your OB has. Why risk your life and the life of your child. I was not a big supporter of the vaccine. But I have now seen too much. I am getting vaccinated when the vaccine is available and I plan on getting my son vaccinated.

My son is 2 and a half and tested positive for h1n1 about 11 days ago. He was also put on the Tamiflu. There were no side effects at all for us. It seems to be a good medicine for the flu. It cuts down the sick time by days. Goodluck =]

I too had h1n1 and my 3yr old son. My ped. gave me a prescription for my 12 month old too and advised me not to give it to her unless she started to run a fever. She never did thank god! Why should you take the med. if you have no symptoms. It will just make the medacine not work the next time....what happens if you get the H1n1 later! Just my opinion. If I were you I would only start to take the tamiflu is i spiked a fever....the med works wonders if taken a.s.a.p..

Good luck!

I do not have any experience with Tamiflu however I would highly encourage you to get vaccinated for the H1N1 and seasonal flu prior to receiving any kind of treatment for something that you have not been diagnosed with. If your provider is concerned that you may have caught this bug then I would request to be tested for H1N1 first. There have been some H1N1 cases that have presented without fever or diarrhea. The safest bet is to get tested and get vaccinated. I am currently 13 weeks pregnant and I have received both shots as well and have not had any complications. Congratulations and good luck!!

Hi S.,
My daughter was taking Tamiflu. What I can say is that it really helped her get better faster, and she did not have the flu for a long time it was about a week. I recommend that you take the Tamiflu as a precaution for you and baby. There were no side affects really that I noticed when my daughter was taken it. I noticed that she was sleepy and I thought that it was for her better. Good Luck and hope you and your family well.

I personally would wait. My daughter had a bad virus and really high fevers 104 - she is a teenager. She fought it on her own, it took awhile, but I think the ones who had the medication seemed to have the cough a long time too. I heard the medicine was pretty strong. I have to say I am more the type of person to say let your body fight it if possible first. I would worry about taking it pregnant, I don't think they know enough about the effects it would have on your baby.

Take care,
K.
