I just bought the new Sony Nex 3 camera after using a Canon Rebel Xti DSLR for years. It is new technology, much smaller and lighter, but so far I am extremely pleased with it. Like my old camera, it has interchangeable lenses (if you want to change them) and the picture quality is equally good to my Canon Rebel. The navigation screen is very intuitive, making it easier to navigate through the features than either my Rebel or my pocket Cybershot.

Just a suggestion, but i bet if you called the person teaching the class, they would have some great suggestions. I've bet they've seen alot and can tell you what will work for a beginner but grow with you too. Or if this is through a college and the prof won't talk to you, call a camera specialty store and just talk to them about a few options. then shop around.

I just got the Nikon D3000 - it's been a great camera so far! It's very user friendly and doesn't break the bank! I shopped around and found the best price at Sear's however sometime Best Buy & Target have good combo deals (camera + bag + another lens). Good luck and have FUN!!

I am by no means a professional photographer but last year before I had my baby I decided to treat myself to a Nikon D60 DSLR. My baby came really early so I never really had the time to read the book and learn about the camera as I was planning but I managed to figure it out as I went and here and there I read the book. I am sure this camera has a million other featuers that I am probably not utilizing to full capacity. Like you I really want to take a photogrpahy class. Where are you taking your photography class? I love my camera it takes amazing pictures. I really love the action setting which gets amazing pictures with fast moving images ...I get wonderful pictures of my little guy. Also, don't skimp on the SD card. I have a San Disk Extreme SDHC 30MB/s Card 8GB and which allows me to take the pictures very quickly since it reads and writes them to the card very fastly not to mention the pictures upload to my computer so quickly. Hope this helps.
