T-Ball/Baseball For 5 1/2 Yr Old.

My son wants to be a baseball player when he grows up. So my husband & I thought we would sign him up for T-ball, little league, something...

Problem is, I don't know where to look. I saw the South Garland Little League team, but it requires proof of residencey for 2011. We moved into our home in Feb of this year. Plus looking for something around the North Garland (south of Firewheel) area if possible.

Thanks for all of your help & suggestions! (past & present)

Go to your city/town website. They will have links to the parks and rec department, youth services, etc. If you can't find the info online just call the city and ask, they will point you in the right direction.

He may be too old for t-ball. I only say that because most t-ball boys are around 3.5 to 4 yrs old. But a little league of some sort would be fine. Speak with someone in South Garland Little League about the residency thing. You may be able to work around it.

I really think you should put him into either Little League or Pony League Baseball. He will love it! My son is obsessed with baseball and had a great time on his Pony League team.

Sometimes their websites aren't up to date, so something that says 2011 might be from last year, and 2012 proof of residency will suffice. I'd give them a call and see what you can do, given the fact that you're new to the area. There must be protocol, as I imagine they deal with this a few times every year.

Where I live, five year olds DO still play t-ball, so I don't really think your son is necessarily too old, as other posters have said. Our games were two innings of t-ball followed by 2-3 innings of coach-pitch. It was perfect. As for not keeping score, it's nice to have that for your first year and get introduced to the game without the pressure of winning and losing. Trust me, there is plenty of time for that.

Your son will love it. I would definitely, 100% go with a real league (little league or pony) vs taking a class or joining a team through the YMCA.

He's actually sort of too old for T-Ball. They don't even keep score. It's to teach the kids how to start building skills and have fun playing. Most of the time the parents are laughing and having fun watching the little ones do flips and dig in the dirt while the ball rolls through their legs. Try the YMCA or some other sports association.

I think starting him off in Little League would be the best start in this case. He must already be playing some if he already knows what he wants to do with that.

look at area YMCAs and the city's park and rec department. Curious if you called the south garland team or just looked online. Sometimes info online is outdated. Maybe give them a call and see if there is anything you can do to get him in.

also, I do believe that at 5 and 6 they are in coach pitch, not t-ball in many areas.

I expect their website isn't up to date. You can still play there though, we live in Plano and did a season in Garland. Wasn't happy, we have our younger son in Plano Baseball Association which might be one to look into. If you can find a team on the east side of Plano it would be close for you. As long as he will be turn 6 before May 1, 2013 then he will be in Modified Coach Pitch, meaning they get 4 pitches from the coach then 3 tries on the tee. Garland Little League works differently, they do tball for 5-6 then move to modified kid pitch at 7-8 I believe. They get so many pitches from the kid then the coach comes in if the kid only threw balls no strikes.
