Swollen Drooping Gum Between 2 Front Teeth

My 4 year old son has been complaining about how his gums between his two front teeth (Frenulum) have been "sticking out", as he put it. They do look abnormally swollen and droopy. We were at the dentist in January when he had hit a tooth that later turned gray. This was x-rayed and we were told not to worry about it. Now we have the gums that have been swollen and almost loose looking for at least 3 weeks. Has anyone seen or heard of anything like it. One note to add is that when he was close to a year old he did tear his Frenulum and it bled quite a bit, but I never noticed any real problems with it after. I wonder if that gum has stretched out to cause it to hang over more. Any answers or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi D.,

I would be sure and take my child to the dentist as soon as possible. Since you said he bumped his tooth a while back and that the tooth turned gray, I think the tooth could now have an abscess. Be sure to have a dentist look at it carefully! They should be able to do an xray of the area and evaluate what to do next.

My son bumped his tooth when he was little. The dentist xrayed it and said it was fine but if it turned gray we should return to see him. He bumped it once more and it didn't even bleed, but it turned gray and I took him back to the dentist. They strongly encouraged me to have the tooth removed or have a pulpectomy done to the tooth so as to avoid any permanent damage to his permanent teeth. They pulled the tooth (he was 2 years old) and he just didn't have a tooth there until his permanent tooth came in when he was 6 or so. It wasn't that bad. But at least we didn't damage his permanent tooth. I would be sure to have it looked at as soon as possible since you don't want there to be any thing wrong with his permanent tooth. If your dentist says its no big deal to leave a gray tooth, you may want to consult with another professional.
Best of luck with your little guy and his swollen gum. You may also want to check if he has a low grade fever. He may be battling an infection in his gum/mouth.

Ok whenever I see dental issues on this site I am always eager to share my knowledge with others about the worlds best childrens dentist, and with this problem please at least just call them and see what they suggest. Even if you dont go to the office he will at least advise you if you should follow up or seek a second opinion. Do your self a favor and call ###-###-#### his name is Roy Beam. I referred many people to him and as always only hear the best. I dont work for him or anything I just wanted the best for my kids, and I when I find a great thing I like to share it. Sounds like gums are infected and you should go back to the dentist for another look and possibly an antibiotic.
